Sunday was a big night for viewing with several program improving on their usual numbers. Seven secured the narrowest of wins, 0.1 ahead of Nine with ABC’s share dropping by one. Seven, Nine and 10 were steady with SBS up one.
Nine was ahead of most of the night on the main channel starting with Nine News as the number one program with its highest rated bulletin of the year so far. Travel Guides was the top entertainment show for another Sunday, up 25k on last week to a season high 1.18 million viewers.
Dream Homes also improved, up 10k, Spicks and Specks topped 700k for a season high while MasterChef was up 15 for its best Sunday in six weeks. SBS’s Eifel Tower documentary came in at 235k.
Later, 60 Minutes was down 30k but still had an easy win with 7News Spotlight improving to make the top 10 this week. ABC’s Austin was down 85k and Ladies in Black down 160k with both series available in full on iView.
Tulsa King on 10 was steady.
Nine also did well to get 400k for the Murder of Lyn Dawson repeat to be ahead of 7News The Latest.
Also noted The Sunday Project had its highest rating of the year.
Dominant Sunday by Nine, news having a great run, it’s going to be painful for Seven and others until well after the Olympics

TVT is claiming Seven won the night due to “stronger multi-channels”, sadly we can’t see them anymore.
Although I’d have thought Adelaide and especially Perth main channels would’ve also helped, as usual, plus of course regional.
Also none of Seven’s m/c made the above rankings tables, 9Go’s Divergent movie and two 10 Peach Comedy programs did though in the “re-ordered by average” 25-54s.
9News was Australia’s No.1 program with Total People. It achieved a National Total TV Reach of 2.241 million and a Total TV National Audience of 1.360 million - up 9% year-on-year. Its BVOD audience of 93,000 was up 55% on the same night last year.
In Sydney, 9News recorded a Total TV Audience of 285,000 - 89,000 viewers ahead of its nearest competitor.
In Melbourne, 9News recorded a Total TV audience of 311,000 - 80,000 viewers ahead of its nearest competitor.
Travel Guides was Sunday’s No. 1 entertainment program across Australia and in all mainland capitals. It recorded a National Total TV Reach of 2.209 million and a Total TV National Audience of 1.177 million, lifting the timeslot by 38.8% when compared to the same night last year. On 9Now, it registered a BVOD audience of 84,000.
60 Minutes won its timeslot across Australia and in all mainland capitals. It secured a Total TV National Audience of 752,000 (up 37.5% year-on-year) and a BVOD audience of 52,000 (up 79.3% year-on-year).
Sunday Afternoon NRL Live recorded a National Total TV Reach of 1.148 million and a Total TV National Audience of 498,000 (up 6% year-on-year), winning its timeslot in Sydney and Brisbane. Its BVOD audience of 45,000 was up 28.6% on the same day last year.
The Murder of Lyn Dawson won its late night slot across Australia with a Total TV National Audience of 399,000.
In Melbourne, the 5.30pm Postcards recorded a bumper Total TV Average audience of 177,000.
The 9Network was No.1 across the 5 City Metro with all key demos and Total People.
9Now was the No. 1 CFTA BVOD service across Australia with all key demos and Total People.
Note that these are broadcast TV numbers. That may sometimes lead to PR releases seeming to differ as to which program won a market if the network is using Total TV numbers that included live BVOD.

7 news win Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth but the margins of victory by 9 in Sydney & Melbourne was enough for 9 to win.
9’s resurgence with news in Melbourne is mainly the reason for their metro & now national wins on some nights as 7 has actually improved in Brisbane.
7 needs to fix Melbourne sooner rather than later.
The thing is I don’t think 7 made any drastic changes which resulted in them winning Melbourne in the last 2-3 years but 9’s big changes seems to have bought viewers back
Nine News Brisbane has been winning big during the week recently. Sunday NRL doesn’t often seem to help Nine in SEQ, though it is hard to compare the 2 hour NRL lead in with the 30 minutes of Weekender - if you averaged out Seven’s programs across that time they would be lower than NRL.
Have you noticed a big difference in bulletins between weeknights and weekends, be it presenters, direction, producing/content, editing, reporters etc and vs the other network?
I don’t know why these networks think putting an almost identical show up against another which s already established is going to work. I guess it’s there as filler when there isn’t AFL in those states but they’d probably be better off airing a new episode of The Chase or even a repeat on Sunday’s. At least it’s offering something different.
Given Travel Guide’s success there is definitely an interest in travel shows. I do wonder if something like Getaway could work as an hour again in more prime slots on the weekends? (e.g. Saturday night’s 7.30 or something). It does well enough at 5.30 and I guess its intention is to be the lead in for the news.
Or just continue with the tried and tested Border re-runs, which they have over 20 years of now, regardless of people’s opinions on the show today, at least they rate (more or less) and would be far cheaper and easier than commissioning and producing a local show
The only pro of those shows is that they are essentially an advertorial and most things featured on it would be paid for by the sponsors and/or places that they showcase. So it could be a big reason why they go with them, however if t they don’t serve as a strong lead in for the news then 5.30pm is not the place for it.
That’s exactly it. Is it worth getting rid of 5 state programs mostly paid for by someone else, for one national program that may or may not add viewers to the news.
No doubt they’d only chuck in the uaual Border security type program anyway.
If one of the breakfast shows introduces local news for each city then it will benefit their ratings big time, maybe it’s time for sunrise to come introduce that in the east coast as Today has been winning many days now. Most likely the other show will come along and copy the local news
