Nine had an easy Sunday victory easily winning all timeslots from 7pm.

Married At First Sight broke through the 1.6 million barrier with a rating that equalled the combined audience of its commercial competitors’ reality shows. That put it 600k clear of the premiere episode of Australia Idol that, otherwise, got off to a great start to average just over one million viewers. That compared to the previous season that launched to 787k.

Also launching was a new season of Muster Dogs for ABC that had 772k on a competitive night. That was up on the previous season’s premiere episode that had 528k. Over on 10, I’m A Celebrity was up 40k to its best result in over a week.

Meanwhile, the final season of The Newsreader managed 432k on ABC, that was down on the 2023 national figure (excl BVOD) of 475k. SBS’s Mysteries Of Stonehenge also rated in the top 30.

60 Minutes was also back with 960k, up 90k on last season, a number only bettered twice last year. It easily accounted for Billy Joel Live on Seven with 466k and 10’s Jack Ryan movie on 248k.

9News Late also did well for Nine with 529k to make the top 10.

Weekend Sunrise was lower than usual with 365k but 90k ahead of the competition. Insiders was back with 482k and Offsiders made the top 30 with 353k.

Seven’s sports coverage included Bathurst 12hr and Cadel Evans Road Race in the top 30 (the First Test listed will be adjusted).

Am surprised Idol premiered so high, wow.

That’s a solid result for 10’s national weekend bulletin too.

Massive win to Nine thanks to MAFS and 60 Minutes.

Australian Idol’s new season got off to a decent start.

I wonder though if having the entire season of The Newsreader available on iView will affect the linear ratings.

Good start for Idol… Eyes onto round 2 tonight now. Ding, ding!

But it was a massive win to Nine across the board, taking any shine away from Seven.

10 probably would’ve thought Celebrity might be closer to Idol, but their key demos are good. Seven still struggling with younger viewers, also seen by the difference between broadcast and bvod, a very disappointing result for Idol on 7Plus. Nine well over 50% share in 16-39s in metro total tv, wow.

Great result for 60 Minutes’ special, kept that Nine share high, including 9Now. Melbourne should’ve been high.

Do wonder how many casual TV viewers just happened to stick with Idol’s launch, after seeing the funny or impressive audition promos during Border and Seven News? Rather than having planned to watch 7pm Sunday. Different lead-ins tonight too with Tipping Point and ACA. Regular daily TV patterns should return now with most being back at work and school if not last week today or by tomorrow.

Isn’t that a success for Nine and a fail for Seven? Not sure how/if we should really draw a positive there for Seven! We are now in VOZ, total national audience, let alone reach and is now how networks trade and want us to talk. It’s not 5 or 10 years ago. So ah, yes, the difference actually was as it reads, a huge 600k I reckon…

Wow very surprised by those big numbers for Idol. Here I was thinking that this was going to be a season where some of the audience tapers off a bit (as it felt a bit of the same to me). It looks like it must be doing particularly well in regional areas.

Crazy too that MAFS numbers continue to grow each episode. It is almost pushing a 3million reach in overnights alone.

Overall a lot of people watching FTA last night.

I’m saying 7’s BVOD is failing and hence the 600k difference. They are only now trying to lift their 7+ platform with shows airing on that first etc. using old methods we would say it’s close but new system shows the failure of 7’s BVOD

But we’re not using old methods, we always include bvod now, because especially the past 5-8 years so many previous terrestrial broadcast viewers have now shifted to bvod, in many cases permanently.

I really think you’re misunderstanding the point Sully.

@Apple75 is just saying 7plus is underperforming compared with 9Now, the huge difference in BVOD audiences show that - that’s a fact. It’s also fair to say Seven’s stronghold in regional areas really prop up their total audience numbers.

Only quoting part of their comment sort of changes the narrative here too, I think it’s a fair point to make.

You can really slice the data any way you want, the networks do it, and don’t get me started on reach being the main metric used nowadays

Ive got people in ireland addicted to MAFS, that they VPN to 9now. I wonder with such a big overseas following if this is counted in 9s numbers for BVOD for MAFS

Have mentioned that major US websites are giving tips on how to watch the show via VPN

Not sure how the ratings data handles VPN viewers because it otherwise does identify where on-line viewers come from.

I realise what Apple’s saying, it’s just personally I’m not buying that whole ‘7Plus’ angle. They’ve shown during WWC, Olympics and AFL GFs etc it can rate through the roof (IIRC 7Plus holds the VPM record to date).

Viewers are not tuning-in to 7Plus like 9Now, because they’re not watching Seven like they are Nine. Simple isn’t it?

We know bvod skews young and that’s why Seven’s broadcast audience is always higher than 7Plus, because of their larger regional and Over 55s audiences, which largely don’t watch via bvod.

Nine’s programs skew younger and it’s reflected in 9Now’s ratings, as well as the convenient fact they’ve also got the No. 1 show on TV which does well in total people including Over 55s as well to get those high 1m average viewers.

But to suggest ‘Married and Idol are close, it’s just 7Plus letting Seven down’ I don’t think is a good way of analysing things at all and I doubt both Seven and Nine HQ would be seeing it like that.
Sure, Seven would be happy total audience is up YoY and they get a headline magic million figure, but when you look at the splits such as metro, bvod, 25-54s, 16-39s, Sydney and Melbourne… It’s a landslide to Nine and Married. What the commercial networks and advertisers care about. And it’s not that 7Plus itsself is an issue, it’s that those core metrics aren’t what Idol is pulling in.

I’m happy to be corrected though! Always appreciate MS members’ input and discussion, I might be mistaken or overlooking something else
