A new season of Travel Guides premiered in its new Sunday time slot averaging just under one million national viewers. It wasn’t enough to bump Farmer Wants A Wife off the number one entertainment spot but was 400k better than The Summit had achieved the previous week.

The result saw Farmers and MasterChef both down by 90k week-on-week and Nine with a 5-point improvement over last Sunday. Seven was down one; 10 dropped one but just held onto third place as ABC was steady and SBS shed three but stayed in double figures.

ABC’s Call the Midwife was up slightly and the top scripted show of the night while After the Party that followed hit a season low while FBI on 10 dropped 55k after last week’s season high.

The improved lead-in also saw 60 Minutes post a +120k win over 7News Spotlight, its first for five weeks.

Earlier Nine News was just 50k behind Seven’s 6pm bulletin after the afternoon’s AFL came in at 412k just behind the NRL with 453k.

Travel Guides’ new timeslot debut was an instant success, having a bigger reach than Farmer Wants a Wife and was just 14,000 lower than Farmer’s national TV audience. If Travel Guides can hold its audience, it will pose a headache for Dream Home and MasterChef in the next few weeks.

Nine’s first big night and success since Easter non-ratings, I reckon the industry could see this coming with one of Nine’s sleeper hits (even if often used as filler) in Travel Guides being promoted for Sundays and a huge jump across the board on Summit and even Lego. Key demos especially.

Despite Seven still doing well and Farmer (both winning), even if very narrow.

Nine notable for pipping Seven last night in the old share metric of five city broadcast by the smallest of margins!

Guides helped 60 Minutes to its first win and decent audience in a while, while Nine News had a great night, especially Sydney and Melbourne (surprisingly given the nail biting overtime AFL finish) and a rare very close result in Perth.

Huge margins in daytime for Seven out west, with local AFL teams in Port and West Coast live (one was a 7 production and the other a Fox simulcast).

Did 7 keep post game going in Adelaide until news (after cutting off for Melbourne at about 6:03pm)? Or insert a Border re-run with no ads?

And in Perth, the game moved to 7mate at 6, explaining the low news results especially Seven, with many changing channels.

Nine hoping for the same next week up against the premiere of Dream Home.

  • Travel Guides launched as the No. 1 entertainment program with Total People across the 5 City Metro and in Sydney and Melbourne. It was also the No. 1 Program with the key demographics of People 25-54 and People 16-39 across Australia.

  • Travel Guides registered a National Total TV Reach of 2.161 million and a Total TV National Audience of 986,000 - up 7.1% year-on-year. On 9Now, it achieved a BVOD audience of 67,000 - up a significant 17.5% on the corresponding episode last year.

  • 9News Sunday was the No. 1 program with Total People across the 5 City Metro and in Sydney and Melbourne. In Sydney, the bulletin was 81,000 viewers ahead of its nearest competitor and in Melbourne, the bulletin was 45,000 viewers ahead of its nearest competitor.

  • 9News Sunday secured a National Total TV Reach of 2.076 million and a Total TV National Audience of 1.213 million. Its BVOD audience of 71,000 was up 24.6% on the same night last year.

  • Sunday Afternoon NRL Live registered a National Total TV Reach of 1.097 million and a Total TV National Audience of 453,000, easily winning the afternoon timeslot with Total People in Sydney. Its BVOD audience of 39,000 was up 30.0% on the same day last year.

  • 60 Minutes achieved a comfortable timeslot win with Total People across Australia and in all metro capitals. It recorded a Total TV National Audience of 585,000 - up 12.5% on the same night last year and a BVOD audience of 39,000 - up 44.4% year-on-year.

  • Weekend Today was the preferred morning program in Melbourne. It attracted a National Total TV Reach of 749,000 and a Total TV National Audience of 275,000 - up 8.7% year-on-year. Its BVOD audience of 24,000 was up a massive 41.2% on the same morning last year.

Was just thinking the same, could Seven potentially drop Dream Home from the following Sundays if they get thrashed (let alone land 3rd or 4th) in the timeslot?

Mondays and Tuesdays could be a ‘war of the flops’ (Summit v Dream Home), also good for 10 and ABC’s Monday hit shows.

Seven might bring forward DWTS to Sunday. Unless all of this was already expected and tipped by Seven and that’s exactly their plan? Ping: @aarontvcentral.

Is weekend today usually that close along the east coast? I always thought it was further behind.

I think Dancing will start June 16, as I think Seven have AFL on Sunday June 9 (King’s Birthday Eve).

I mean yeah, they probably wouldn’t want to start it until around then, they haven’t started pumping out all the media marketing with dates full throttle yet either and usually a show gets at least a few weeks of that.

Seven would probably be hoping for at least 600k nationally, doubt they’d be expecting anywhere close to Farmer. But if tanks from ep 1, say 500k or less in total tv, especially for Sunday, they might be forced to act.

This match will be huge too. It seems a new annual marquee fixture. So with this in prime time on a Sunday and the annual Kings Birthday public holiday the next afternoon, a good opportunity for Seven to ram home promos. Like what they used to do with Melbourne Cup carnival for that Tuesday night in Q4 for example.

Travel Guides is for 9 what 100% Club is for 7.

It was doing poorly everywhere, including Melbourne, but seems to have picked up this year, especially recent months and AFAIK is now regularly winning at least Melb (Seven have a lot of work to do in their heritage and core AFL market - also highlighted by last night’s news result).

Nine could win if they put Travel Guides repeats instead of The Summit, that show was dead from last season, and they still decided to renew it. Would of been better to keep Australian Ninja Warrior!
