Aside from the fact The Project is in Melbourne and Studio 10 is Sydney…
Doesn’t Sunday come from Sydney?
I think @TV-QLD was suggesting the other studio at Pyrmont, which they sometimes use for The Sunday Project since it’s not being used much currently.
It was always a huge task asking people to switch on over from the other stations - but they did it.
You can’t blame lead in, you have to make a compelling show to make people want to come over each morning. Pedestrian TV just won’t cut it.
@blackbox What’s your call on it?
Does 10 keep with it, or explore a new format for this time slot, with a fresh new look?
8.30am is a really weird time to start a show when there is essentially nothing on before it. If you’re going to program original content at 830am I think you need to program 6am - 830am too. Otherwise it’s just there as an island by itself.
It’s a guess- but I’m guessing the demos for 9am-11.30am are terrible. Anyone under 50 is out the door by then and you’re left with much older ad-unfriendly demos.
I think 10 need to program 6am-8.30am and get in that business, looking forward.
No one is blaming lead in but when the network is not in the business of breakfast Tv not many people will come to Ten for morning TV. Lead ins sure help.
Most of that was the team, Rob.
Yes 7 and 9 have an advantage with their shows.
But I don’t blame the lead in here. The show was pulling 80-100k a couple of years ago, with no lead in. It’s now half that.
It’s clear with the numbers that people are not liking the product enough to turn over.
The show has always evolved, so there’s no reason you can’t stick with it. If you look at episode 1 and my last episode they are very different shows, it was constantly evolving.
It was also about looking at the trends. Yes, 8.30am is a weird time to start the show but that was based on the fact we were expecting WAKE UP to provide a lead in, unfortunately we outrated the lead-in!
So, as mentioned above, I think the EP needs to look back at what connected with audiences… which was a mixture of team and content.
A lot of unnecessary changes were made to the show and those changes didn’t resonate with viewers. Sometimes I really do wonder if the behind the scenes team actually understood the show.
First thing I’d do is do some major research, bring back the 5th panellist starting at 9.30 and build a consistent team. I know we did have a bit of revolving team, but nothing like they have now. I seriously don’t know who’s supposed to be hosting the show these days (except for Joe who’s always there).
I’m not being a downer… I’ve been watching the figures and kept quiet, but I’ve been hoping those in charge might spring into action (I would have been beside myself with these numbers after the highs we were getting).
Anyway, it’s probably not my place to say. I had my time, and while I’m proud of the content and ratings we achieved things didn’t work out and I’ve moved on. It took a bit of time to move on but I genuinely have now and I wish the show nothing but success
This is on the money. If you build the right product they will come
Ten have said that the hosts on The Project will be consistent throughout this year rather than random people appearing. Maybe that plan will eventually come to fruition at Studio 10?
I was a watcher of Studio 10, used to switch over at 8.30 from Sunrise, however, now I just stay on the Morning Show, even though I don’t really like it, or I find something else to watch. Studio 10 is really not enjoyable anymore, nothing to entice you to watch,Joe, whilst very intelligent is so overbearing and seems to dominate. Studio 10 was once fun, while being able to discuss important and different topics. Now it holds no appeal unless Denise Drysdale is appearing, that seems to lighten the mood of everyone.
There was a period from the very early days until about 2016 I used to religiously watch every day, no matter where I was I used to tune in. It honestly helped me through some pretty challenging and tough times in my life but now I honestly couldn’t really care less - I find Angela boring and KAK does nothing for me and really miss the unpredictability and opinion of the 5th panelist. It doesn’t feel like the same daggy family feel show I used to usually love, it just lost something along the way which they haven’t been able to duplicate the last few years. They had such an amazing range of extended family - Carlotta, Toni Pearen, Anjali Rao, Susie Elelman and Jo Casamento and many others. It kinda just feels like it’s plodding along, I’d be surprised if Sarah sticks around for much longer as I’m sure she would be hot property elsewhere it there was an opening.
Me too. 2016 was my favourite year- they made format changes including red hot topics, $5 Quiz, Morning Quickie, Buddy Goode’s opener and month in review and they added Denise. My favourite days were actually when the mega-panels were on as Denise and Ita both offered different aspects.
I miss Ita, Jess and Robbo and it’s not the same without Jono on daily. Even the extended family, as you mentioned, were great including Damo (the barista). I used to find it difficult to turn the show off but now I hardly watch any longer than 10 minutes, which is a shame. It’s just not the same.
They just need to go back to the 2013-2017 days back in the production studio and return all of the stuff that made the show fun (5 dollar quiz, Grinds my Gears, Ding Dong does Dinner etc) and maybe give those segments a refresh as well.
By far the newsroom is just not a great place for the show despite how big and pretty it looks. The audience are off on a very weird angle whilst the panel is OK-ish but not that ‘into it’ if you get what I mean.
As for hosts they need to get someone like Gretel Killeen or even Jess back on some days so that they can be the point of difference and challenge the dominant opinions (usually from Joe and KAK). Ange is fine but she doesn’t quite have that bit of oomph to challenge Joe or KAK like Jess with Joe and Ita back in the day. Narelda Jacobs is a great panelist and I would utilize her more in the studio than on the road. They also need to find a new ‘Robbo’ who is willing to be a funny daredevil and bring some fun to the show.
However one element I would NOT return are those awfully cringeworthy Buddy Goode songs every month. Makes my ears bleed with the excessive cringey tunes and absolute nonsense.
For me, the reason why Studio 10 was so successful in 2016/17 was because of McKnight, and the format he implemented. From the $5 quiz, Robbo and all the fun and exciting segments involving Ding Dong and the others to the strong balance and chemistry to the panellists, that is what made Studio 10 so successful. Ding Dong brought a lot of viewers to the show, including this one.
I must say that I look up to McKnight, for his commitment and hard work to the show, and I don’t care what anyone says, it will not change. NO I DO NOT KNOW MCKNIGHT PERSONALLY!!
I stopped watching when they moved the newsroom, because I felt the show wasn’t as fun anymore and had lost it’s shine. I also struggled to understand at the time why they would move Family Feud to Sydney when it’s ratings were shocking in 2017, and should’ve just been axed. When McKnight went and Sarah was on maternity leave in late 2017/early 2018, the show honestly lost the plot. Through a combination of the show dropping the 5th panellist, the existing panel members were starting to have way too many days off (which still continues now) and the show not being the same without Sarah (nothing against Tarsh though), I was out and went back to The Morning Show, which continued most days after Jess and Ita left.
When KAK came along, I thought this would save the show. But within 2-3 months and particularly after the Yumi incident, I thought it was a mistake. As a result, I very rarely watch the show when she is on it, and have changed to Today Extra or TMS whenever I sense she is about to go on a rant. I was watching when she asked that reporter a few months ago whether she was wearing any pants, and I honestly have not been able to look at her in the same way, and have not watched the show on days she has been on since.
Joe has also gotten on my nerves in the last several months (particularly since I have finished school and am watching morning TV somewhat frequently), with how much he rambles on and his stupid jokes. Angela, whilst I feel is a great reporter and has a decent enough personality, I just find is not the right fit for the show. I feel sorry for Narelda, moving to the other side of the country only to do 2 days a fortnight, where I feel she would be great on the panel daily and would add some much needed diversity. Sarah and Tarsh are the only reasons I would watch the show, especially since Ding Dong cut her days down.
In all seriousness, the EP needs to look at what made the show so successful and start implementing a lot of these elements, because based off the show’s ratings off late, I think the show will not make it. I think KAK needs to go, a fifth panellist needs to be introduced, and Narelda needs to be on the panel every day (with Ding Dong filling the 5th panellist seat on days she is on).
I can not believe I wrote that much!
Personally when I catch up with studio 10 these days, I find the show has lost it’s seamless flow. I never realised, for example, how much difference the live links to advertorials with Jono used to make. Now advertorials are like irritating signposts to change the channel.
I think it’s important to take into account both points that people bring up here that:
- The show has been better in the past, more exciting/different/variety of segments
- As @blackbox mentioned, that the show was constaintly evolving.
With both those points in mind, it’s important that the show doesn’t just go “lets go back to what worked before” (something that every FTA network has attempted with shows from the past, but it doesn’t produce lasting results) - but rather looks at how to evolve what worked in the past into something that works now.
The most fun the hosts seem to have these days is a bit of laugh at the desk about the topic of conversation or cross to a news break. Why? What happened to all the ridiculous stuff they used to do? The Japanese game show day? Or even just cooking segments outside in the courtyard?
The “$5 Quiz” was getting old imho before it disappeared - but I always wondered why this segment wasn’t a “week in review” quiz about what had happened on the show/the hot topics they discussed/funny items.
Changing the show to improve it will take some time to make happen, and I worry that if they don’t start now the show won’t be here this time next year.
i was just thinking the same thing. kak needs to go and so does joe . i turned off the day kak arrived. i watched her on 9 and knew what she was like. the new ep of studio 10 needs there head read or something , why on earth did studio 10 allow kak on the show i never know . maybe it coz shes got to fell revelvant in the current era or something but its a huge mistke of her even being on the show
As a casual viewer it’s the hot topics portion of the show I prefer. The gimmicky stuff with Jono I don’t think is necessary (however I acknowledge I’m probably not the set demographic for the show).
Sarah is great as the anchor. I’m a fan of KAK and Ding Dong (just for the nostalgia). I think Joe is actually insightful for the newsy and political side of it things) and is there for a specific purpose. Angela is a bit too toffee for the show for me. Not a fan of Natarsha in this format (love her as a newsreader). And surprisingly I’m not warming to Narelda either (also big fan of her news reading as a Perth boi).
I also don’t like that sometimes they can go a good 45 mins to an hour without starting a hot topic.
