Stadia

The reasons why i i prefer brisbane live at roma st are as follows:

1 - crowd control - if there were events ending at the arena and the stadium at the same time thats alot of people exiting and using public transport

2 - roma st is the biggest railway station in brisbane. being walking distance to it means phenomenal public transport to events

3 - capacity. roma st is scheduled to have a capacity of 17,000. arcadis is proposing a capacity of 13,000 for the arena in vic park. we should be building bigger not smaller

4 - people will protest the loss of public green space at victoria park. a stadium is the most important peace of infrastructure we need for the games so there is more of a chance of being built alone than building the arena as well

5 - i’m a big fan of parks around stadiums like the MCG and Optus in perth. it gives more flexibility of use. you can have more space for things like merchandise, food vans and even multi stage concerts.

Yes I agree with all that, but in the end it might come down to saving money/not exceeding the 7B funding cap. As things currently stand, the 2.5B for the Arena at Roma St is the single most expensive building being proposed.

Also saw a report in the CM this morning they might be looking at having the Brisbane Arena near cross river rail at the Gabba, even if the stadium isn’t built there.

i syuspect, given the premiers comments on the cricket the other day during the rain delay on the abc that a PPP is being strongly considered

Can you provide diagrams/images? Also, is there a word limit. Keen to provide a submission given my experience travelling to the Gabba and various venues on the Gold Coast along with my experience to the Paris Olympics including the way they quickly exited 80,000 spectators all through one station

accorsing to the FAQ i don’t see a word limit but i wouldn’t go overbaord.

Diagrams i would think would be ok but the submission poral only takes pdf and word (i think) so you might have to embed them

Gabba West proposed as main venue for 2032 Brisbane Olympics

A tunnel under Vulture St and a second Gabba is the “obvious solution” to solve Brisbane’s Olympic stadium problems, a new submission insists.

Kirk Architects is proposing ‘Gabba West’ be built above the Woolloongabba Cross River Rail site to sit alongside the current, smaller, Gabba.

In a joint proposal, Kirk director Rickard Kirk and principal Andrew Magub say the near-empty site is the “most accessible site in the city”.

Gabba West would be a new 60,000-seat stadium built above Vulture St after minor land acquisition, while the current Gabba would be retained to provide warm-up, support and ancillary functions during the 2032 Olympic Games.

It’s actually an interesting idea I didn’t see coming. After the games I assume the old Gabba could be sold off for apartments, a bit of green space and even expand the school.

no its not that obvious, when we have a barely used, large parkland that we can use at Victoria Park.

The funding envelope for the games is $7.1 billion. Crestafulli on the ABC the other day during the rain delay at the cricket made it clear that that’s it. whos going to pay the hundreds of millions for the tunneling?

The Current gabba should be kept for 2032 - but as a cricket venue, with the final event there being the 2032 gold medal game.

Having two Gabbas certainly does sound like the obvious solution. I remember arriving late at the Gabba for a Lions v Collingwood game and the ground was full. Having an overflow ground next door would have been good, like they used to do for Swans games with the SFS.

Gabba West, full - open up Gabba OG with the overflow and you could be looking at crowds of up to 90k for Lions home games.

?

How are the players meant to be in two different places at the same time?

No it’d be the stewards who’d be opening up the other stadium, taking care of crowd control, stuff like that.

The “old” Gabba would not remain after the Olympics. There is zero chance there will be 2 stadiums side by side post 2032.

I agree that Victoria Park still appears to be the best option.

But how are you meant to have 90 000 people watch the same game in the same place? One stadium will only have 60 000, the other has 30 000. So there is no way 90 000 people can watch the same thing at once in person:

Found this online - the playing surface at Marvel Stadium.
Pretty disgraceful

Must be the result of recent concerts (Pearl Jam, Coldplay, Travis Scott) and Supercross events at Marvel Stadium. There was also the annual RMIT graduation ceremony which took place on December 18.

EDIT: Cricket Australia released a statement earlier tonight, during the BBL match, to defend the stadium turf.

Yes that’s never going to happen. The “old” Gabba would be demolished post the Olympics if they go with this option.

ENGIE Stadoums outfield looked worse for wear a few nights ago…

But we can be certain that Marvel will be looking absolutely immaculate come March 15.
