Stadia

Just hold the phone until the October state election. QSAC won’t happen.

Just wait till the State election. The current government is toast. The LNP are likely to involve the private sector and something new will be built at either Victoria Park or North Shore Hamilton.

The issue stopping a privately funded stadium for the Olympics is this:

‘One of the underlying principles between the state and Commonwealth governments and the IOC that all venues should be publicly owned’

As good as it sounds, it’s all a publicity stunt.
The people behind this would already know the requirements laid down by the IOC.

Could it the privately built, then handed over to the Government, at least for the lead up and duration of the games?

Yeah but american LA venues are privately owned

Presumably the rule @TVWest mentioned is in the agreement with the QLD Government and the IOC.

Where can we view this document?

IDK - you would have to ask @TVWest where he got the info from.

However, found this:

If there’s a will there’s away. As others have said the LA venues aren’t publicly owned. It might be in the Qld agreement with the IOC but perhaps some sort of PPP would be a loophole.

I think I read somewhere there might be some agreement between the Feds and State on this, rather than the IOC.

Anyway I’m fairly sure there was private sector investment in the Sydney Olympic stadium. While I believe it is publicly owned the investors got a long term management deal in exchange for investment. There’s no reason Brisbane couldn’t go that way too. At the moment the only reason appears to be a stubborn and desperate State govt trying to cling to power.

Yes, The NSW Government ended up buying out the PPP for Stadium Australia after they went sideways. I believe the one for the Superdome ends in the 2030s

I don’t see any of this as all that populist either though. People are either on board with the Olympics and want a good oval stadium as a legacy project, or think the amount being spent even in the cut down plan is still obscene.

The biggest issue with the private plan I would assume is the “let the Government sort out the transport” - which is something the Government did, Cross River Rail has a station at the Gabba! But if you aren’t going to build the stadium there, then absolutely, demolish it, turn it into a high density housing precinct and use the funds from that to build a clean sheet stadium in another spot that’s well connected to transport.

The long walk to Suncorp isn’t great, and there’s a huge benchmark with how well Sydney did it.

i would rather the gabba be demolished and the site kept as parklands. it adds some needed greenspace, it means east brisbane state school can keep a bit and it offsets any loss (probably at victoria park) from a new stadium.

personally i’d like to see a new stadium for a few reasons.

1 is that the gabba is space contained thanks to the roads around it. it already hangs over Vulture and Stanly St. rebuilding would be painful for the commuters who use those major streets.

2 - building a new stadium at victoria park can ensure a seamless transition. cricket and AFL can just move over when the stadium is ready

3 - Vic park has decent public transport links already with the busway with cross river rail the ekka station is going full time. they can build a bridge over from the ekka to vic park to handle the crowd.

I agree with that. I think Vic Park makes a lot of sense for those reasons. I also think North Shore could work, but it’s between those two. The Gabba is out for the reasons you outline. I do think there might be a compromise though if they demolished the Gabba. Some green space, a slightly expanded school, and a couple of residential towers.

Barlow Park in Cairns will receive an upgrade of around $91 million to host football matches during 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

However the upgrading of the ground to a 20,000-seat stadium for the Olympics will be temporary, with about 15,000 seats to be removed after the games.

lol. What’s the point in that. Is cairns suddenly in Brisbane? :joy:

Sydney 2000 had football at the MCG, they spread the matches to get it all done in time.
