Stan’s coverage of the 2002 Short track gold is without Basil’s commentary and just the crowd noise

Wasn’t sure where to put this but I found an AFL match between St Kilda and the Kangaroos, from 2002, being covered by Fox Footy, where Huddo (then also at Network 10) was the lead commentator.

That’s interesting. I knew Huddo was part of Fox League Teams back then, and Fox used other commentators from Nine & Ten during that era (notably Cometti for select Sunday Perth games with Bennett). I guess the fact it was an FFC exclusive meant it was ok for Huddo to call the game.

In Qld it was closer to 15 overs

9 had only Friday Night and Sunday 4PM games (plus Origin, Tests and Finals), Pay had everything else

I’m pretty sure that Ten’s 2002 AFL graphics package template (including replay wipes) was toned up slightly and used on Fox Footy Channel’s broadcast as well.

That’s correct; Fox Footy didn’t have it’s own unique score graphics until 2004.

The only difference was Fox not showing the five-minute warning which was a staple of Ten’s coverage.

Two such examples occurred in 2003 when TVQ-10 televised two Lions matches that were covered by Fox:

FWIW, while Brisbane viewers got the St Kilda vs Brisbane Lions match on June 7, 2003, the rest of the country got the Ten-produced match between the Sydney Swans and Essendon that was played at (what was then known as) Telstra Stadium.

The “Decade of Tri Nations” DVD used the world feed commentary, which is why you don’t hear the 7 team when the game is in NZ or South Africa. However, on the “MacQueen’s Wallabies” DVD for the 2000 Tri Nations they used the 7 commentaries for the matches in NZ and South Africa given that 7 produced that DVD (the 7 call was used for the fall tour matches from that year too)

When the VRC put the 2002 Melbourne Cup rights up for tender, Seven and Nine were in the mix but it was awarded to the former network. Nine had its footy commitments with Ten snatching the AFL rights off Seven that year as well. It was not until 2024 when Nine finally got the opportunity to air the race that stops a nation

As well as the Sydney to Hobart, which had previously aired on Ten in the 90s and Seven for most of this century.

Yep. A reason why Ten had to shed the Melbourne Cup Carnival rights it had from 1978-2001 was that it secured the AFL rights from 2002

Is there any of this around online?

With the Boxing Day test underway. We go back to 1991 to the last ever home test match the ABC televised. vs India. Come the new year in regional areas they were on local tv. In my case NBN

Closest I could find was just that you can see the lack of toyota sponsorship on the speed gun in this clip from Nine’s coverage

With paywall, an article regarding this story

I wonder why Ten was not able to afford both AFL and Melbourne Cup TV rights at the time.

During the Late 1980s (Until 1991), 10 held both NRL and Melbourne Cup Rights.
