  • Brisbane would have had Toowoomba , Wide Bay/Sunshine Coast and Lismore antennae
  • Adelaide would have been an issue as Spencer Gulf, Riverland and Mount Gambier were too far away
  • Perth (particularly southern parts e.g. Rockingham) would have had antennae for GWN Bunbury

Typical pub antenna setup at the Erskineville Hotel (the Erko): Wollongong UHF antenna on top, Kings Cross UHF translator antenna on the bottom. My own photo.

Back in the analogue era (so early 00s before it was switched off) the Mercure hotel near Sydney Central station had both Wollongong and Sydney TV channels available in rooms… the MATV system obviously hadn’t been updated for a long while as when you switched to 10 Wollongong, the word ‘CAPITAL’ still came up in white text on the MATV playout system! Reception was almost practically perfect as well, no snow at all.

No idea but that would make sense. It would be a fair trade off.

Round 11 2001 St George Illawarra v Newcastle. First year Fox had exclusive NRL pay tv rights so full Fox graphics. Away game that was also shown on NBN.

Was every game televised after SuperLeague ended. I’m talking seasons 1998-2000.

9 still had 3 games a week and everything else on Fox/Optus with generic branding?

Not in 1998 when it was a 20 team premiership/10 games per round. From 1999 when the NRL reduced to 17 teams/8 games per round every game was televised.

Want to acknowledge the Passing of Arthur Higgins recently and how he promoted Rugby League in the Late 90’s and Early 00’s in Melbourne. W Being a Victorian Born Storm Supporter( Dissatisfied with the AFL at the time), Arthur help us learn the rules of the game on 3AK while commentating on the game(I just wish the NRL took a leaf out of this but still NSW centric). When 2GB and Ray Hadley had Hatred to the Storm(Some commentator still do Hi Dan Guianne), Arthur gave a pro-storm commentary and annoyed the New South Welshman and Queenslander people that listened to the call and the Call back after the game was fantastic listening the the Storm Supporter and the Opposition bagged the bias commentary and the way he rebuttal the caller saying there is way worse bias commentary in Sydney without giving the name of the Radio Station.

3AK commentary was want was needed when the AFL People did not care or they were scared of the NRL.

NRL should be acknowledging what Arthur Higgins did to Grow the Game here in Melbourne but agian deadly silence and zero care factor

Vale Arthur

IIRC, The final NRL game not to be televised was the Western Suburbs Magpies vs Penrith Panthers which was Round 24 of the 1998 NRL season.

We found a few Ch9 footy reels yesterday in a shed outside of Melbourne.

Will keep you posted on how it turns out.

And silence from Melbourne Storm too, seeing they were the benefactor of 3AK’s coverage.

To this day, 3AK remained the only commercial radio station in Melbourne which broadcast every Storm game live on analogue radio. Of course it is not possible to do it now thanks to NRL radio rights deal which sees matches split between networks.
