Spicks & Specks

Maybe try a new show all together? It’s not in the ABC’s legislation that it MUST show Spicks and Specks.

This kind of nostalgic thinking and commissioning is why millennials and Gen Z have no reason to watch or listen to the ABC.

They’re always trying new shows as well but those shows don’t seem to do as well as Spicks and Specks:
Tonight at the Museum
Question Everything
Claire Hooper’s House of Games
Crime Night!

EPISODE 2

WEDNESDAY 15 JULY 8.40PM

Stop! Hey, what’s that sound? It can only be the opening notes of Spicks and Specks, heralding in a brand-new series.

Adam, Myf and Alan are back, pondering the big music questions as well as sweating the small stuff – such as can music be made using hospital equipment, what would Nessun Dorma sound like if it was about a butt-scooting dog and exactly what did Ed Sheeran get up to in Japan with Justin Bieber?

This week’s guests include Ruel, Olga Koch, Deborah Cheetham Fraillon, Tom Ballard and a special performance by Playlunch

Respectfully (and as a Gen Z who actually watches the ABC), that’s because those shows were naff. Tonight at the Museum has to be one of the worst commissions for the ABC of all time. Just awful, and a waste of Alex Lee. Ditto for Julia Zemiro and Crime Night, although that did have some potential. They’re just recycling the same unfunny faces over and over, and wasting the actual presenting talent on terrible premises.

Spicks and Specks is unfortunately the last live music outlet on free to air which is depressing, to say the least. So that at least keeps it in my good books. They should bring back ‘The Set’ - that was a real gamble. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but maybe take a leaf out of 10’s book. They need incubators for new talent like HYBPA and TCS. From there, new shows can be pitched and talent developed.

Yes, I agree! They could even slot it in on Thursdays after the Grand Designs/Restoration Australia Slot instead of their constant repeats they show atm. They should link it up with Triple J and drive marketing through their social channels on insta, tiktok and youtube. They could even repeat it on Saturdays at 6PM in the old Countdown slot.

Do something cheap and cheerful at the Triple J studios or even the Eugene Goosens Hall at ABC Ultimo which can have a large audience in a music venue.

Exactly! Cheap and cheerful would actually endear it more to a Gen Z audience. Feels less corporate. Make it clippable for socials and post the episodes on YT too.

ABC should do a Spicks And Specks / The Set and a Rockwiz crossover series  (yes, am aware Rockwiz was on the SBS).

Sadly, the music genre on our screens is bare and thin.

Spicks and Specks does Rockwiz?

ABC has already proven that the original Spicks and Specks formula still works. They’ve also corrected many of the mistakes made in previous revivals by sticking to what made the show great in the first place—a strategy that so many other reboots have failed to follow.

Why would you want to give the show a Hey Hey It’s Saturday-style gimmicky feel with tacky themed episodes when the format already lends itself perfectly to themes naturally?

EPISODE 3

WEDNESDAY 22 JULY 8.30PM

Adam, Myf and Alan are back, pondering the big music questions as well as sweating the small stuff – such as can music be made using hospital equipment, what would Nessun Dorma sound like if it was about a butt-scooting dog and exactly what did Ed Sheeran get up to in Japan with Justin Bieber?

This week’s guests include Buyi Zama, Amy Shark, Joel Creasey, Tyrone Pynor and a special performance from Keli Holiday.

Michael Paynter has posted photos from Wednesday’s season premiere on his socials.

Why are the ABC PR team releasing the episode’s press release well before (like, weeks) before they air?

To raise interest among casual viewers.

This far out? I get it coming out 7 days before the next show…but 2-3 weeks? It’s confusing.

EPISODE 4

WEDNESDAY 29 JULY 8.30PM

Adam, Myf and Alan are back, pondering the big music questions as well as sweating the small stuff – such as can music be made using hospital equipment, what would Nessun Dorma sound like if it was about a butt-scooting dog and exactly what did Ed Sheeran get up to in Japan with Justin Bieber?

This week’s guests include Caleb Harper, Dami Im, Nikki Britton, Andrew Maxwell anda special performance from Julia Jacklin.

See…why release it on the 8th of July? 3 weeks before it goes to air. Most people will forget who is going to be on the show.

Agreed. Do it week to week like HYBPA does.
