Major technical problems on Australia Today this morning. Playing the theme music for the show on repeat interspersed with ad breaks every 5 or so minutes. The theme music seems rather creepy, lol.
What are the car radio coverage extremities of the Orange SCA signal from Mt Canobolas?
Licensed for 5kW OD, the coverage is well outside the licence area, beyond my travels, so I am interested to read from those who have driven out to its extremities.
Yes, have received it west of Katoomba, also down in Lithgow and between Capertee and Illford towards Mudgee. Also at Grenfell and Cowra round to Boorowa and Crookwell.
How much further west towards Dubbo, Parkes, Forbes, West Wyalong and Wagga?
Triple M / Hit 105.9 coverage from my experience on the car radio.
Blackheath to the east, Clarence on the Bells Line of Road.
Both stations are receivable in Dubbo to the west and Cowra to the south.
In Bathurst reception is variable due to terrain shielding. I hope that helps.
In my experience, they fall about 30 kms short of Dunedoo on the Golden Hwy and out west, around Narromine is about as far as it gets that way, I doubt theyād make it into Gilgandra.
But can attest in car coverage is fine in Parkes and Dubbo, but indoor reception may struggle a bit.
The 80 KW powerhouses fare better of course, they can be had out to near Nyngan, up near Coonabarabran and down to near Temora and Cootamundra.
Heading south Iāve managed to pick it up just south of Boorowa between there and Yass.
Iāve heard traces of 105.1 from Canobolas at elevated parts near Moonbi on the New England Hwy.
Yes, I have had faint 2GZ 105.1 and Star FM 105.9 back in the day at Oxley Hill Lookout in Tamworth.
Can hear 105.9 & 105.1 as far as Dubbo, Forbes, Parks, Cowra, Mudgee even Oberon.
Pretty much the whole of the Central West.
Yep, RDS level reception is possible in the car well south of Forbes on the Newell. Heading north it holds on quite patchily into the Warrumbungles but drops off past that. Massive coverage range for that drive, gives listenable reception for a good few hoursā driving.
Itās a great signal that one. A few years back I was able to get 105.9 faintly from mid way between Narrandera and West Wyalong. Once south of that it fades into the floor and scattering of the Wagga array pops up
Listening to Triple M in Newcastle today and I must say Rod Maldon is one of the best radio announcers in the country.
Heās an even better person and boss. I donāt get to see him often now because of COVID and working different hours, but when I do, I soak every word up.
Driving back to Parkes from Canberra I could pick up what was then FM105.9 from a few kms north of Bowning on the Lachlan Valley Way all the way through to Parkes. It was receivable on the home stereo unit in my parentsā house on a hilltop in Parkes. 95.5 ROK FM from Parkes could be picked up from between Boorowa and Cowra, the transmitter on Mount Coonambro (which incidentally was on my grandfatherās farm) has reasonably good coverage but not as good as Canobolas.
I found ROK FM co-channels a lot with SKY Sports Radio Wagga Wagga around West Wyalong.
I didnāt think 95.5 was a particularly good choice of frequency, not sure which was first on air though, I suspect ROK FM was ā¦ In that case, I would have given SKY 92.3 in Wagga and since YYY Young is low powered, either 94.7 or 101.1 for them.
You would be right about that.
According to ACMA, ROK FM went to air on 31st May 1997, whilst Sky Sports Radioās Wagga service went to air from around 2005.
The coverage is amazing considering Hit 105.9 and 105.1 Triple M are only 5KW OD and transmit from the smallest tower with an antenna height of 20m. It is the altitude of Mt Canobolas at close to 1400m and the relatively flat terrain towards Dubbo that helps it travel great distances.
Orange can be heard around the clock here on the Yagi, with fair in vehicle reception starting around Yass as mentioned by a few others. I get Canobolas at very similar strengths to what I got in Oatley. Crookwell gets pretty good reception from Canobolas; there are still many TV antennae pointed in that direction since Crookwell didnāt get a translator in town until very recently.
Which is fed off air from Goulburn I think, so same content as Canberra, except ABC is likely to be NSW.
I would like to know how they receive the dab+ signals from Mt Gray into Crookwell? The Mt Gray translators are very low powered.
I know Tralga is Fed by Knights Hill and that is stretching it to the max.
I assume you meant DVB-T and I imagine it comes down to a good line of sightā¦
44 kms from a 100 watt TX with a good antenna might be achievable.
