Sky News (2016-Feb 2025)

Agree. Sky News at 9 followed by Paul Murray for 90 minutes would be perfect.

I work late. Would love a 9pm news cast.

I wonder if there is any rights issues regarding using news footage obtained from other networks in prime time? Particularly on the fta regional channel?

They have newsnight for an hour every night right now

Certainly in the past there has been rules regarding at what times of the day they are allowed to use certain news footage. Particularly on the fta regional channel.

Newsnight is normally at midnight during the year. Hardly prime time.

No more rules from my understanding after they ditched their contract with Seven. Sky have an agreement with Nine which allows use on Foxtel and FTA

Newsnight between 9-11pm on summer weeknights. 9pm-midnight on weekends & Mondays over summer. Will be interesting to see if they alter weeknights in a few weeks to allow more consistent news coverage.

It’s prime time right now however.

I actually think the day reporting and NewsNighjt are the only good things about Sky News. Decent reporting. It’s just between the hours of 6 and 9 (AEST) it’s where it’s just liberal love and labor bashing.

Thank god being in WA by the time I get to sky news at night to watch the news all the after dark has finished for the night

You’re conflating FTA with Subscription - there is no doubt that news rates on FTA, but it’s never rated well on Subscription here.

Sky did ‘straight’ news for nearly 20 years and it didn’t move the needle, shifting to the talking heads opinion has driven their rating performance. That said, it probably didn’t help that the majority of the bulletins were rehashed content from Seven and Nine.

Even now, with any bump that you might expect Sky News to get from running opinion at night to their daytime ratings doesnt seem to eventuate.

It used to be a semi-decent channel 15-20 years ago. Never set the world alight, but it was good enough. I know the ratings weren’t great but I’d take that Sky News over the current version any day.

The straight news such as newsnight news day and first edition Make the top 20 shows on STV oftentimes. It doesn’t rate as high as the talking heads no doubt.

But Sky’s straight news isn’t very good. It’s dull flat feels looped and lacks any urgency. It’s like ABC news 24. It doesn’t rate because it’s not good. MSNBC, Fox etc do straight news with live crosses, video walls, dynamic fast paced. Sky feels like win news. A dry newsreader on a locked off shot with packaged reports.

If they reinvented the well and did something like you see on NBC news now at 9pm and sandwiched it between two talking head shows and promoted it - I believe it would have legs

Chris Kenny’s show has had ratings issues for sometime. His timeslot would notably drop about 20k-30k viewers compared to the 7pm and 9pm shows.

Perhaps he’ll host Sky’s new live forum show.

Full Details of the Sky News 2024 line-up:

Sky’s live linear ratings peaked a few years ago and have been in decline since just like all linear TV

Digital offerings and new distribution are needed to offset that

I think the best thing Sky needs to do in 2024 is secure FTA coverage in the nations top 5 TV markets were the bulk of the audience is

Sky of course does well with its Digital Originals series, All Stars and short videos presented by reporter Gabriella Power for the website, YouTube and Facebook.

Sky should at least expand into the FAST channel market like what they did recently via Samsung TV Plus.

As for their new Q&A style show The Jury, i reckon Danica will do a good job as the host. She’s done well filling in during the day interviewing guests and even challenging them at times. This one really stood out to me when i saw it.

Her presenting style is the worst. She shouts and shouts. She’s just awful. The show sounds awful as well. It looks like it will focus on the usual culture wars dribble and this alleged jury will no doubt be stacked with extreme right wingers.

Any forward thinking progressive would die of shame to be seen on this program or platform.
