Isn’t Mike Lindell running some biazarre unhinged site called frank speech? Perhaps sky could migrate their content over to that site where all the niche lunatics hang out.
Its going to be interesting to see what comes of this - we’re in an interesting situation where from a practical standpoint, the content is able to be broadcast on its ‘initial’ broadcast platform (because the regulator is unable or incapable of regulating it). No doubt we’ll see a freedom of speech or media being silenced angle from Sky in response.
Its really telling that YouTube is more willing to regulate content then the agencies that are employed to do the same.
Good to see YouTube making a sensible decision for once by temporarily banning Sky News from uploading to their platform as a result of spreading misinformation about COVID.
But a critical question remains begging: How the f*** is Sky News still allowed to spread much of this same misleading information on Foxtel and regional FTA TV?!
And yes, I’d be saying the exact same thing if Seven, Nine, Ten, the ABC, SBS or any other major Australian broadcaster saw themselves in a similar position.
I seriously thought ACMA might grow some teeth when SNOW appeared on FTA, but it’s clear that it hasn’t.
Is there any way to sue Sky News out of existence? Australia’s libel laws are quite strong, but there’s no law against airing complete and utter BS on an easily accesible public forum or FTA transmission.
I always thought the morning and afternoon sky news was actually pretty good. It’s the after dark 6pm shows that is the problem …. I would rather see that evening line up axed and not see any good people and reporters of Sky News lose their jobs .
It’s irrelevant whether we like the presenters in the evening line-up or not. The fact is that Credlin, Bolt, Jones and Murray are the highest rating shows on Sky. They’d be mad to axe them.
35,000 - 50,000 isn’t exactly high rating.
If they didn’t have the social media following they do, particularly in the United States the financial viability of the channel would be absolutely in question.
Sometimes you have to sacrifice things for the greater good. In this case, ratings.
That’s not entirely true.
Credlin and Bolt average in the 70k-80k range and Paul Murray and Alan Jones around 60k. Credlin comes #1 every night on subscription channel figures.
Alan Jones shouldn’t be spreading misinformation about covid but clearly there’s a market for him if he’s retaining viewers night after night. Look what’s happened to 2GB now he’s left. I think he should stay on, but be strictly warned against spreading covid misinformation.
I also think it’s important for media diversity to have a right-wing alternative for those who want it.
While we have self-regulation, we wont have effective regulation. Our current system discourages complaints (they have to be in writing either by letter or via Free TV’s complaint portal [which as it turns out doesnt list SNoW/SNR as a channel]) and you can only escalate it to ACMA after 60 days or you get a response you dont believe is suffficent.
Sky News is proof that it doesnt have to be high rating these days to make an impression - they get way more views on other platforms to justify the content
Diversity is more then left or right wing - we could do with some real diversity, not just a bunch of white boomers shouting bile.
Just because something is high rating (and therefore, unlikely to be axed) doesn’t mean we have to “follow the herd” and agree with popular opinion.
Cue @KICK-IT defending those numbers as being good for Australian Pay TV!
That and if it was owned by a media organisation other than News Corp, who are probably big enough to sustain one or two loss making ventures (eg, The Australian).
Even though to the best of my knowledge, there are not many (if any) left wing alternatives on Australian TV for those who want it?
Yeah, I agree with that.
Is there a left wing equivalent?
Most current affair programs on the ABC.
Is that the same ABC the left attack at being a mouthpiece of the conservative government?
In that case, it must be pretty balanced if a you think it provides a left wing alternative to Sky.
But then I can see why you might think that, I mean pretty much everything is to the left of Sky.
2 in particular that stand out as Left Leaning. Q&A and The Drum.
Expecting complaints from contributors on Sky News tonight about YouTube having a ‘woke agenda’ and silencing the ‘quiet Australians’ along with any other buzzwords they can come up with.
Good decision.
For fuck sake …. Your constant bashing of abc being leftist is just getting old.
No. Just no. Not ABCs fault if current Morrison government persons don’t want to attend . Your drinking the ABC bashing lol aid. Don’t worry we can deprogramme you. ![]()
Their ratings were a fraction of what they are now. Whether people like it or not, it is a shining light of pay tv - its consistent listing amongst the top programs proves that.
Not when it’s spewing lies, misinformation and plain verbal abuse to people the presenters don’t like.
