An international one - SABC’s TV1 on 11th March 1989
Note the info at 9:11 - I don’t think you should be publishing the address of a firearm owner. ![]()
TVNZ 7 was on air from 6am until midnight, seven days a week. Its overnight information service - which basically contained the latest national and international news stories in detail, weather forecasts and video clips taken from TVNZ’s news and current affairs programmes - was shown on screen when TVNZ 7 was off air.
Also having seen quite a few UK sign offs. How come they all have this fixation with reminding viewers to switch off their TVs? Makes me think of that episode of The Young Ones
There are probably boffins over there who’ll either think their TV isn’t working properly when they don’t see anything on their screen, or will ring up to complain. These things do need explaining to some.
British made TV sets probably explode if left in the socket overnight. ![]()
I don’t think that’s actually far from the truth! Early TV sets could overheat and catch fire, apparently.
Probably explains why bad language and sometimes nudity was banned in the early days of TV… too much “heat” for the TV to handle? ![]()
Valve TVs were also a big user of electricity.
“Hasta la Vista, little fat kid.”
They had a gender-split Cousin Oliver in HD by that point - Arthur and a Darrin’d [and age-reduced] Jenny.
[EDIT: removed youtube video]

I don’t think I’d seen this one before, with night shots of the TEN10 studios.. and of course that crusty old Advance Australia Fair footage… did every TV station use that?? ![]()
That’s a reupload, the original from FLEMISHDOG can be found here.
In that case i have removed the youtube video and people can view mr dog’s upload
@rhettrospective has come up with the goods once again.
I don’t know if this has been posted before, but here’s a NEN closedown in its early Prime days back in 1990. It is in 4 parts - the actual closedown & national anthem is displayed here, but the rest you’ll have to copy and paste.
Looks like it has been edited from the last 9&8 Television sequence, of which the sign-on was on YouTube but is gone.

How many stations used that crusty old Advance Australia Fair clip?
Quite a few, looks like an Navy promo film that was sent to the stations and they picked the one they liked. If the government (effectively) is giving you something for free (I hope it was free), may as well take them up on the offer and use it.
They do it to this day, there are government produced pieces that one could theoretically use to end the broadcast day if one wanted. I’ve ordered CDs and DVDs for use at work with the national anthem in all varying configurations, and you can download clips as well, and they’re free. Just call the local member.
Not entirely uncommon, they did that in the US - IIRC the Air Force and the Mormons prepared ones for stations to use as a community service/free plug.
Judging by what I’ve seen, there must’ve been 2-3 versions of the clip with the same music behind. I don’t know why they used an abridged version of Advanced Australia Fair though - some sort of federal regulation?
NBN and CTC had the one with the Navy ships, planes, marching band on Sydney Harbour and the reverse Navy flag (why they didn’t film it going the other way is beyond me).
ATN and GTS/BKN had the one with the Navy band at Government House (I think) and the same Navy flag flapping in reverse.
TEN and MTN had the one that started with the reverse Navy flag, then the Navy frigate and helicopters, finishing off with the Navy band on Sydney Harbour (Garden Island I think).
By the late 80s, yes the film reel/video was starting to get a little crusty. The CTC clip did show some artifacts, but I don’t know if that’s the tape at our end getting crusty before it got digitised or the effects of said digitising.
