Capital went 24/7 in early 1995 from memory when they adopted the Ten branding. That said, they were 24/7 in 1989 when aggregation began but that didn’t last long.

Must cost a packet to switch to TCN’s dirty feed and all go home.

VIC TV, a Nine affiliate didn’t go 24 hours a day until WIN took them over in 1994.

They used to switch off the transmitters overnight… that (power usage) is where the cost/saving came from.

And they wouldn’t get any of Nine’s ad revenue for taking the dirty feed.

Was TV shopping not allowed until then? It’s been a thing longer than that.

No, I think it was just a case of TV networks were making enough money out of traditional ad spots that it felt didn’t really need TV shopping as there were only 3 commercial TV channels in metros / 1 in regional areas before aggregation and no pay TV.

Prime closedown from 1989 after a Hawks match. No announcement, straight into the anthem after reflections and some weird musical pieces over the test pattern.

There were attempts made in the 1980s with short-lived shows on Ten and Nine. But it never really took off.

I recall that RTQ7 in Rockhampton had Home Shopping Guide listed for half hour during the day around the time Nine aired it (I think it was presented by Brian Bury

The Home Shopping Show with Brian Bury and Karen Pini (later Fiona MacDonald).

Channel Ten’s brief attempt was Value Shopping with Jimmy Hannan. Circa 1986ish?

Stole my thunder there.

Info commercials seemed to work in the mid morning shows.

I dont think they so much as worked but was used as filler fodder - pre multichannels my mother used to go and do things like hang washing on the line when these infobreaks were inserted into Kerri Anne and Bert etc.

Only “worked” because they got paid for it and it was cheap to make TV.

they are big bucks for the networks and they obviously work in making sales otherwise advertisers wouldn’t keep using them

Exactly. If the makers of infomercials didn’t move serious merchandise they wouldn’t make them and if they weren’t still going off the air during the overnight hours, they’d either be showing old movies or just relaying an overseas news channel

Sad but true. Personally I would rather watch International news broadcasts, but the choice isnt there. That said, we would probably end up with the Sky News Australia equivalent in the midnight to 6am slot

For a brief time in Aotearoa the National Party had their own TV station, TVNZ 7.

This is their final sign off, complete with goodnight kiwi.

Well Sky News Australia after 1am just relay the UK Sky News. Didn’t one channel here once relay CNN?

Ten did CNN under Newswatch brand I believe and Seven may have as part of News Overnight
