Shaun Micallef’s Parents’ Evening

Shaun Micallef’s Parents’ Evening Coming Soon To 10.

Australian comedy royalty Shaun Micallef is returning to 10 with a brand-new comedy show, Shaun Micallef’s Parents’ Evening, based on the hit UK format created by Ranga Bee for ITV. And because nepotism is alive and well, Shaun has enlisted his son, Gabe Micallef, to co-host alongside him!

In this new cross-generational game show, it doesn’t matter what you know. It matters what your mum or dad think you know.

Here’s the deal. Each week, three well-known Australians team up with their lesser-known parent or child. A topic is presented, and the parents have to guess how many correct answers their grown-up kid will know.

If they get it right, they’re cruising toward victory. If they get it wrong, they can enjoy a very awkward drive home.

Family pride, bragging rights and a very real pile of cash for charity are all on the line as Shaun and Gabe steer each family through the chaos.

Shaun Micallef said: “I’m very much looking forward to working with 10 on a show that will either bridge the intergenerational divide and bring families closer together or blow up that bridge and drive us all further apart.

"I’m also looking forward to working with my son Gabe, who moved out recently and I don’t get to see that much.”

Gabe Micallef said: “What an exciting opportunity it is to work with my father! I look forward to discovering whether the Australian public finds our relationship charming or deeply strange. Either way, I’m grateful to 10 for giving us the chance to conduct this important father-son experiment on national television.”

Packed with laughs, surprises and more than a few bruised egos, the series proves that no one knows how to push your buttons quite like family.

Shaun Micallef’s Parents’ Evening is produced for Network 10 by ITV Studios Australia.

I like Shaun Micallef but we’re starting to get close to the bottom of the barrel in terms of concepts.

I can’t help but feel a certain network is getting a little too desperate to recapture the magic of a certain other well-known Shaun Micallef format that recently received a rather unsuccessful reboot.

How many projects does 10 need to hand Micallef before it realises the issue isn’t him? Yes, networks need fresh commissions, and yes, this is a new format—but attracting new audiences requires a host they already know and actively want to watch. Shaun is undeniably versatile and talented, but versatility alone doesn’t guarantee ratings.

At this point, it feels less like a bold programming strategy and more like an attempt to recreate past success. Personally, I just can’t see this one working.

If Shaun actually did a comedy variety style show (Mad as Hell 2.0, if you like) I’d watch it but we don’t need another game show with the same ‘celebrities’ that are wheeled out for ever other similar local format on tv at the moment.

I’d rather see Shaun Micallef in a new concept than see Mad As Hall 2.0 or the weak reboot of Talkin 'bout Your Generation.

If there was going to be a news satire show on 10 then they should consider someone new. My suggestion is Christie-Whelan Browne. She filled in for Shaun on Mad As Hell for a couple of episodes and she was really great. She was always great in the comedy sketches and she can act and sing too.
