I wonder if Nine are celebrating the news that their competitors will by the end of next year, be further away from the CBD than their recently moved-to home at North Sydney?
To put this map into context: â1 Denison Stâ is the current home of Nine News Sydney, â7 News Sydneyâ obviously pointing to Martin Place while âNEP Groupâ is where Seven News Sydney will call their home in the near future.
âŚand that some decent investments are made so Sevenâs new home of News & Current Affairs is on par with, if not better than Nineâs at North Sydney.
Nah, thatâs probably wishful thinking. Given the form of both networks in recent years, weâll probably continue to see Nine lead the way in Sydney TV for the foreseeable future while Seven plays catchup.
I wouldâve thought this decision has been several years in the making, what with increasing security concerns along with the cost of Sydney CBD rent.
I thought all of ATN7 was at Epping, including after the divestiture of the associated Frenchs Forest film studio site, all their studios and film lab. ??
I remembered Seven moved its Sydney news operations to Martin Place to copy NBC, which hosts its Nightly News and Today Show at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. The relocation and recruitment of Ian Ross were major reasons for the ratings revival of Seven News Sydney.
But obviously times have changed and Martin Place studios have served their purpose.
Thatâs true, however Seven will also be further away from the city than Ten at Pyrmont (if the news operation there is even still running by Late 2022) and the ABC at Ultimo.
It was never going to be sustainable for them to remain at Martin place. Itâs a massive cost and there really isnât the need to be so central with the way data and links can be established these days.
Itâs actually a good thing for Seven, they will have more space to work with.
That was set up purely for network promos to be filmed. Nothing to read into that
There was hints from people I know that it was actually leftover from Big Brother filming of the season that wrapped last year. (The studio component like the finale last year)
Agree - the cost v benefit equation doesnât favour Seven remaining in Martin Place considering Sunrise doesnât really take advantage of the location like they once did for a whole range of reasons.
Not to mention the move to Eveleigh will hopefully allow Sunrise/The Morning Show & Seven News/The Latest to be able to (respectively) have sets which suit their shows rather than having all of them share a multi-purpose set which doesnât work for any of them.
The Sydney CBD is apparently the Sydney 2000 suburb. Based on that, Seven Eveleigh is a couple of hundred metres closer to the southern border of the Sydney suburb than Nine North Sydney is to the northern border of the Sydney suburb.
I wonder where those last minute stand ups will be done now Seven wonât have easy access to Martin Place?
Nine has made good use of their new location since moving in with stand ups being done from the harbour foreshore at Milsons Point and sites that overlook the northern approaches to the bridge. Iâve enjoyed playing âname that North Sydney CBD streetâ when reporters have just stepped outside and walked around the corner from 1 Denison Street. At least the train corridor at Eveleigh will make a good backdrop for Seven when reporting on Sydney public transport.
They might keep a small space somewhere in the city, a bit like Skyâs City Studio, where they can keep a cameraman, a link to the newsroom and a spot for a journo to hotdesk. They might even split it with Sky if they have to move as well.
However, our responsibility to deliver cutting-edge, market-leading news and public affairs content has outgrown our current location.â
Itâs sad to see it go, but itâs clear theyâve outgrown this facility. They barely make use of the current location as it is.
As @MBB said, they need separate areas for programmes now days. Itâs currently a tight space and rolling sets in and out during the day has its challenges.
This. In the early 2000s the whole âstreet front studioâ thing was still something to show off and to some extent it worked well for Seven but that is all ancient history now.
I never liked it for the 6:00pm news though and whenever Sunrise would do a serious story you would have some clowns jumping around in the background unaware of what was being presented. It wasnât good.
It has worked for NBC Today for a long time but even they no longer make full use of it like they used to. Times have changed.
I wouldnât get too excited though. If Seven stay cheap Sydney might end up with a Perth style studio complete with desk. Perth called their new studio âstate-of-the-artâ as well before they moved and you all hate it. Lucky for you all Sydney usually gets the better stuff so I think youâre safe.
Did Seven ever really use it to its full potential and wasnât it a constant battle with Sydney City Council to get permission to hold events in the plaza?
