Seven v Nine News Ratings Comparisons

Perth is very interesting to watch.

Some serious movement there.

Last ratings season, Nine News won just three weeks in Melbourne. If they win next week, they’ll equal that 2023 tally in the first three weeks alone.

Not only is the Loxley/Steinfort partnership starting to click, Tipping Point is starting to have a positive effect on the 6pm ratings in the two biggest markets (also Sydney).

Wonder what’s happening in Brisbane with Seven News 2/2 to start the ratings season…

Week 10 2023

Australia was less interested in 6pm news in week 10 with Seven News down an average of 51,000 per bulletin while Nine was 40,000 lower.

Nine continued to dominate Sydney while in Melbourne the big turnaround continued. The return of the AFL had no impact on the comparison results with Nine actually posting a bigger winning margin over Seven News this week. Nine was up 9% on last year Seven was down 14%.

Brisbane saw Nine’s first win of the survey including the second highest rating for the bulletin this year on Monday.

Seven pulled further ahead in Adelaide while Nine closed the gap in Perth, up 7% year-on-year.

Probably time for a year-on-year comparison in each market at the end of this week when time allows.

Year to Date - Metro

As promised an analysis of metro ratings to the end of week 11. First table represents the calendar year and the second the Survey weeks 7-11. The data is a close as possible to the previous ratings we have been used to looking at. There are a couple of days missing from the data during the changeover that might have a small impact on the averages.

Second set of tables compares the numbers to the equivalent period in 2023 when you recall we had to average the 6pm and 6.30pm numbers to get a number across the hour. The numbers are overnight broadcast TV and exclude BVOD and consolidated.

Sydney seems to be the most stable market though there is a small trend away from Seven. Brisbane, where Nine had a small lead last year, is trending towards Seven but Nine is also up. The trend is on towards Nine in Melbourne where there looks like the bulletin is up directly at the expense of Seven’s In Perth, Nine is trending up as well but Seven hasn’t dropped as much yet. In Adelaide, Seven is doing comparatively better.

Incredible to think how much Melbourne has changed in little less than 6 months.

I would say it’s returning to status quo. 7 had an incredible 2 post covid years but 9 is back to their dominant pre covid numbers

I also remember in 2012 when Nine hit back with a vengeance in Melbourne; after five straight years of playing second fiddle between 2007-11, it hit back hard winning all 40 weeks in 2012 (their cause being partially helped by the fact it was an Olympic year), also doing so in 2013-15, and 2017.

In fact it hasn’t lost a week since the announcement that Alicia and Tom would succeed Hitch on weeknights.

Week 12 2023

Week six saw Seven News down 17,000 on the previous week while Nine improved by 6,000.

In Perth a change in the afternoon line-up for Nine achieved the intended results and was reflected at 6pm. Continuing a trend for the year, Seven suffered its fourth consecutive drop week-on-week while Nine made its fifth consecutive gain. Compared to week 12 of 2023, that saw Nine’s bulletin up 32% while Seven was up 3%.

By contrast in Adelaide Nine’s bulletin, despite gains in the afternoon, was down by 34% and Seven was up 4%.

Nine continued its winning steaks in Sydney and Melbourne were down 30% and 21% respectively.

I think we might see a change in presenters this year.

Brenton and Kate have been at the helm together since 2014 and I think the latter has been in the chair for slightly longer (I think she started in 2011 or 2012).

I also think Nine did the right thing by axing Hot Seat and introducing Tipping Point to the 5:00pm timeslot; as we have seen in recent weeks, the new game show has been beating The Chase and this has had a huge effect on its improved news ratings, particularly in Melbourne where it hasn’t lost a week since November.

Sydney also saw a serious challenge mounted by Seven News which won 12 weeks last year, but so far, as is also the case in Melbourne, it’s yet to get off the mark. Nine wasn’t going to wait until it was too late to make the necessary changes it did.

Kate started in 2011. I doubt they’ll change the line up but after 10 years together and pretty much no success in that time, something needs to be done at NWS9.

Maybe Edward Godfrey should replace Brenton once his UK posting concludes. Would freshen up the line up.

Week 13 - Metro.

I was unable to post these because one set of numbers for Good Friday was corrupt and have not been able to overcome the error.

It was a non-survey week so it only impacts the calendar year tally of weeks won. What could be seen was the usual suspects won in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. The week to too close to give a win to either bulletin without the missing day’s result so will have to settle for a tie in SEQ. So the annual tally is:

image

Based on just the 4 days of the week, Seven’s bulletin was down 12% on the previous year while Nine was up slightly. Both bulletins rated lower in Sydney while in Melbourne Seven was down about 30% with Nine up 4%. Brisbane saw both bulletins up while Adelaide saw Nine down 30%. In Perth the Seven bulletin was down 10% with Nine up 10%.

Week 13 2023

Finally got to it!

Most bulletins were higher than the Easter week with Seven News up 19 and Nine News up 39,000 as the later edges closer each week.

Compared to the same week of 2023 Seven was down 9% in the 5-city market while Nine was up 6%, a big turn around.

Sydney saw both bulletins lower. Melbourne had Seven down 26% while Nine was up 8%. Brisbane featured a 10% increase for Seven but Nine was up by 15% to take the week.

Adelaide had both down around 6% while the Perth markets was interesting with Seven down 8% and Nine up 17% with record numbers for Nine’s bulletin aided by it new lead in.

Week 15 2023

After the end of daylight savings in three markets, Seven’s bulletin averaged an extra 7,000 viewers while Nine’s was down 18,000. Compared to week 15 of 2023 Nine’s bulletin was steady while Seven was down 18%.

Both bulletins improved on last week in Sydney but were down on 2023.

Melbourne continued the trend towards Nine with a 30k win that was up 8% on last year while Seven’s bulletin was down 32% (though this week last year included a +400k bulletin for Easter Monday).

Nine in Brisbane secured another win; though narrow it was a 3% improvement on 2023 while Seven lost 6%.

Adelaide saw another easy win for Seven while both bulletins were down on last year. In Perth Nine continued to close the gap, even with last year while Seven was down 23%.

Week 16 2023

Change from 2023

A generally positive week with most bulletins up and where there was a fall it minimal. Nine’s bulletin posted a 40,000 gain with Seven up 14,000.

I’ve added a new table that show the percentage change from the same week last year. Nine is up 5% and Seven down 9%. Melbourne continues to be notable for a 35% turnaround.

Melbourne numbers are unbelievable. Still can’t believe just how right Nine got it with their lineup.
