Maybe slightly off topic here, but do WIN still do the updates for the NRN areas? Wonder if/when Ten would centralise that to Hobart.
Hopefully Ten can wrangle themselves the TDT license so it can be a bit more secure long term with Ten having a reason to have operations down there. Maybe those employees can also cover Tasmania for Ten News proper?
This looks like the license that is next to go if Win have anything to do with it. Eliminating the 10 signal from Tasmania would be a disaster for paramount.
Let’s just see what happens in the wash. You’d think 10 would eventually move regional noodle updates production out of Melbourne.
They have the resrouces and now even more under utilized with the project going. Given they’re constantly consolidating resources, perhaps Melbourne can be the regional news hub for the network.
Obviously I’d love for each aggregated market to receive their updates from their respective metro station, that is highly unlikely.
I’d even argue that 10 news + could have a small local window of 5 mins for each aggregated and metro market to insert local updates.
I can understand the reasoning for keeping these updates produced in Hobart but surely it makes more sense to have newsreaders/writers based across Brisbane (for Qld), Sydney (for NNSW and SNSW) and Melbourne (for Vic and TDT)?
They would have better access to vision, other metro resources and the benefit of actually living in the state they’re broadcasting in.
Things like hiring a Queenslander to do the Queensland updates would bring an understanding of regional nuisances and a care for pronunciations etc.
Also is Hobart attractive enough to retain good talent in the long term? Except if you’re a Tasmanian of course.
Not to mention they have the IT, systems. Workflows and people who know how to do that.
Dont underestimate the cost to business of training people and getting systems up and running.
That would be a lot of work and training and systems workflows and IT to up end a well oiled machine to a new staff. Not to mention they would need to be paid more
I agree that the news updates will move out of Hobart eventually. Probably Melbourne or Brisbane given they’re desirable cities that probably have the space required. I don’t know the current make up of the staff, but the noodle updates have historically been presented/produced by grads/junior level staff who have moved to Canberra or Hobart in the hope that it will be a foot in the door and a stepping stone to their next job. Most of them would much rather live anywhere else, particularly a major city.
For now, Ten have bigger priorities than focusing on what is a very small department, but over time, as staff move on and circumstances change it will become easier to employ staff in Melbourne or Brisbane and there will be savings to be had not having to pay for extra facilities in Tasmania where they have no other operations.
Didn’t catch the name of whoever was reading Victoria’s updates on Monday night, but pro-tip: it might help viewers believe you’re actually local if you don’t mispronounce the name of every town you mention.
Also, a 30 second update containing just one story about Shepparton should not count towards Bendigo’s local news quota.
Yes, agreed. This Hobart arrangement seems very slapdash, and it would make sense to do it out of an existing property.
You’re right, these jobs are entry level jobs for young journos starting out, and doing it from a metro newsroom is much more attractive in that sense too, plus means more hands around to swap and fill-in etc.
How much more do you think they’d need to pay.
Many candidates would actually want more money to be sent off to Hobart where it’s less attractive and a grad might need to move out of home for the first time. Heaps of kids have a dream of becoming a TV journalist. They’d literally be lining up to get a job in a metro news room - even if it is Ten and they have to work on the regional product first.
The quality of the updates would also improve just naturally. High achieving nurtures high achieving, so simply sitting in the same office at metro journalists would foster a better culture for making the product as good as possible. The culture stuck in Tasmania as the network’s secret forgotten love child would be terrible.
Yea fair point. I wasn’t thinking college grads take these jobs. I was thinking adult seasoned staff. But yes If juniors - prob no real cost difference.
I’m shocked we haven’t started speculating on Lou’s replacement yet.
As no official announcement has been made I’d put money on Murph doing weekends in the interim.
As far as a permanent replacement one would think that Nick Kelly, Victoria Eastoe or Lily Thompson would be likely candidates from within. Kiah Wicks could also be a contender.
Maddie Kerr would also be a great option and a familiar face.
Ex SCA employees such as Ebony Ablitt or Britt Aylen who are with ARN or possibly Michael Maney who has done some fill in work in recent times.
I would have put our own weekend update star @techster as my #1 pick but he has previously stated he’s not gunning for the 6pm gig.
