Seven & Ten News (SCA)

More to the point, the intent of the legal requirement was probably to provide meaningful, timely and relevant local news to local communities. Unfortunately, like so many things, SCA is exercising as little corporate/social responsibility as it can by providing the bare minimum possible (generic content such as interest rates for example with a local reference thrown in) and still technically meeting the requirement.

As I said further up the thread, however, the Canberra updates seem to be an exception at the moment and are generally pretty relevant.

In that case an option would be to take on some of the feedback that rattles around. Think about writing, watch a youtube video on how to tie a tie, raise issues with the bosses about irreverent vision being used etc. The world doesn’t treat everyone with kid-gloves.

On another note, it’s around 6 months since SCA axed the SA news suddenly… Would be good if they at the very least added SA Updates into the mix.

When it’s presented like that - we will definitely take it on. :+1: Rather than the endless bashing and harsh words that goes on here usually.

We’re not asking to be delicate with us. Words are powerful, and when it’s presented in a way that doesn’t include the nuances of speech, interpretation can be very open and can also affect someone’s mental health.

We’re just doing a job to the best of our ability.

With the tools/budget/timeframes they’re given by whoever sits at the top of SCA, all that staff can do is their best.

It actually does a disservice to these presenters, you’d think early in your career you’d be in a position where you’re getting support to grow, not just left to flounder with minimal guidance. But I mean how do they fix it? They’re not going to get industry veterans or hotshots coming down to Launceston to work for SCA realistically, so is there a fix? Would the organisation want to fix it? Feel like they are just content to plod along til the whole thing folds and we just get the news downloaded directly into our brains.

Getting veterans and hot shots isn’t required. It just needs people who actually care about it behind the scenes. While I’m sure everyone in the studios at Tassie are dedicated to making it work, the higher ups who are responsible for getting them the resources and support they need clearly aren’t.
To the SCA higher ups, these updates are clearly nothing more than a legal obligation. And, realistically, there isn’t much money to be made from news on a regional 10 affiliate these days.

I say this with all respect, but the best of intentions aren’t going to fix the issues we’re talking about here. The problems aren’t likely in your ability to fix.
Cranky old people like myself ranting on social media forums like this also shouldn’t detract from the pride you take in your work, if you feel you’re doing a decent job, that’s that. Opinions are harsh sometimes, however, I don’t think the comments reflect you and your team’s performance.

I used to say this occasionally about 10 in general, but regional TV is a whole level below this. I feel now that it’s a cop-out, that we’re accepting the excuses being given to produce average television.

SCA as a company is a pretty healthy entity, and even though they’ve reported declines in regional TV advertising spend, if they’re not willing to keep people interested by providing quality output, it’s their demise.

I would suggest starting by examining the support structures for the crews making these updates. For example, they could have a ‘national’ coach and QA producer oversee the content, provide critique and helpful feedback on a regular basis to help keep things moving in the right direction. While also making sure that the crews have adequate resources to make their jobs easier. Even the best in the business need this regularly.

Spending a bit of money to expand your library material and affiliates so that useful vision is available would help as well. Hell, even a map or a photo from socials would be a step forward.

Finally, executives need to stop making 1 person do everything that a 5 person team should be doing.

Without the mandatory requirement for the bare minimum noodle updates, those positions would have been cut anyway. There is no way SCA are going to spend more than they have to when they are always looking to reduce costs. It is the nature of an industry with practically no revenue growth but increasing costs.

WIN are in the same boat now as well under the 50 Nine affiliation. We are lucky they haven’t reverted to noodle updates across QLD and VIC.

I missed the start of the news tonight which would have been a dead giveaway but noticed Kim looked different. She was in the Hobart studio tonight, so the lighting was different, the colour seemed more vibrant and she was sitting about three inches lower. All ridiculously minor differences but I think the presentation was noticeably better.

As a Tasmanian who watches SCA7 News, you guys do an awesome job…Hats off SCA troops.

WIN tries but realistically they are an also ran. An effective campaign was run when WIN closed its local studio’s portraying it as an ‘interstate news service’, and they never recovered. The 1730 timeslot probably doesn’t help…

and the ABC news seems to be a national bulletin now with the odd bit of Tassie news thrown in for good measure.

SCA7’s focus on local stories makes it, with good reason, Tasmania’s best TV news service.

Sport presented outside the control room tonight

Why the differences tonight - ordinarily I wouldn’t wonder if Kim was in Hobart (although well observed, but some of those caps were badly timed for poor Kim!). I love how the smallest things get noticed - although that’s probably what they hate!

Anyway, with Kim in Hobart and the sport from outside the control room does that mean anything is happening in Launceston… relaunch? Just hopeful really!

One thing that happened on Monday night though which made me sad, Murph was back with the weather and thanked Kaia (hope I got the spelling correct) for filling in with the weather the past few weeks and he said we’ll be seeing a lot more of her into the future. I know we’ve been eased into it over the last several months with Murph’s long holidays (well deserved of course!) but I think the time is coming soon for his announcement of retirement. Sure he’s been there longer than I’ve been alive but nobody else does the quality jokes and he’s an institution! Will definitely be a big loss when he does hang up the Swans suit but it has been good seeing him take over news and sport at times over the past few years since Jo left… Maybe he’s going to join Jo and Nick in politics? That would be a fantastic reunion!

Based on previous chatter, their former set was an already old hand-me-down given to them in the 90’s when Southern Cross News Victoria was axed.

The current set came in March 2018 and is barely 5 years old. It’s aged remarkably well even by metro standards (on the rare occasions we actually get to see it!)

Surely Murph’s Retirment is imminent. Still think a salesperson is the wrong choice for a replacement but at least they’re easing the change in over a long period.

Yeah I doubt there’s anything happening but I always like a bit of excitement and the thought of changes!

Nobody really knows she’s a sales person and she’s been great as a fill in compared to some of the others they’ve had over the years who have been a bit deer in the headlights or taken a while to warm up. Kaia seems to have just jumped straight in and gets the place names correct and seems to know what she’s doing - just needs more Dad jokes.

Would be nice to see them upgrade to the same package as Seven News. Looks horribly outdated now.
The set would look great with the new Seven News colouring too.

From memory, SCA had to recreate these graphics from scratch? (Not supplied by Seven?)

It’s spelled “Kiah”

Thanks, I thought it wasn’t right but couldn’t get the brain working enough to try other ways. Cheers.

I’m guessing it was a client Christmas party… All hands on deck. @SA_TV I am not sure how many more times you can make a point of SCA utilizing internal staff for various roles for both on air and behind the scenes.

Who’d know, they don’t do presenter supers.

Oh probably a few.
