Wouldn’t that Canberra update for weather be better if it were more localized in Canberra and surrounds?
You wonder if SCA and ten could’ve done a better deal to have the news as an insert in the 90min state bulletin? Have one segment say 5:35-sport as a local window for each area and SCA inserts a prerecorded local segment into that. Would’ve been much more relevant for local audiences.
In fairness, the output of 10 News First proper (what with their “it’s a bit like watching NBN News in metro markets” weekday 5pm bulletins) probably doesn’t do their brand many favours.
At least the On-Air Presentation of these new “10 News First Local Updates” is much more professional than what we saw from the Canberra-produced updates back in the day. Now those (particularly in the later years) were like something I’d expect to see from a university project, not actually broadcast on TV!
Here’s the video of Canberra’s update, followed not long afterwards by the Sydney update.
Sophie is certainly a lot better at news reading than previous people SCA have had for these updates, but needs some more practice. She seems to be only reading a few words at a time.
These updates are just boring listening to someone just read into the screen awkwardly for 2 minutes.
Agreed.
Of the 16 locations on the map, only 1 is in the local market, and only 8 of them actually even see these updates.
Obviously it must be too hard for SCA to make the weather more localised, but the start does say “Local Update”, so it is pretty weird to see weather for all of NSW on a local update.
Pre-2016 was worse and better.
It started off with a big time waste going through the capital cities forecast, but it did show a 4-day forecast for the main city in the market for the update.
The capital city forecast isn’t needed, but a 4-day forecast for the local market was good.
And the expectation of a quality news update for the lowest rating station in each region is unrealistic. TDT updates were as good as they got. File vision in the beginning. Proper graphics. That’s all we’re gonna get. SCA were lucky under a Nine affiliation.
Question: are all these new 11 journalists for SCA based out of Tasmania? I wonder why they need so many if they’re only doing these rip and reads without any footage or much production required?
Yes. In theory you could get away with at least probably a few less.
4 X Presenters (Victoria, Sth NSW, Sth QLD and Nth QLD).
4 X News Writers (Victoria, Sth NSW, Sth QLD and Nth QLD)
1 X News Producer (Ideal but not super essential if the Presenters can sub their own work).
I understand Launceston is looking after QLD updates and Hobart for Sth NSW/ACT/VIC so there could be a Producer in both cities and a few more News Writers who can double as Presenters when required. Also there would be a Studio Director in both Hobart and Launceston. Not sure if they’ve included this in the 11 total.
It’s kind of amusing how the studio presentation elements of SCA’s new noodle updates are better than what the network-made NNL used for most of its history…
Quite the chip on your shoulder there and not to mention pretty fucking sexist while you’re at it.
I sure hope you don’t consider all of your young female colleagues inferior wherever you actually work.
