The Everest and Caulfield Cup

Saturday 12.00pm AEDT

Two of thoroughbred racing’s most glittering prizes are up for grabs on Seven this Saturday, with fans set to enjoy all the tension, drama and excitement of the world’s richest race on turf, The Everest , and the internationally renowned Caulfield Cup .

On the Spring Racing Carnival’s richest day, there will be an unmistakable buzz around Randwick when 12 of the nation’s best sprinters line up in The Everest to stake their claims for the 1200m feature’s unparalleled $15 million prize money.

Nature Strip will be hoping to re-establish himself as Australia’s premier sprinter after a disappointing start to his spring campaign, but the star gelding’s bid to claim the prestigious Everest trophy will face stiff opposition from in-form sprinters such as Classique Legend , Gytrash , Libertini , Behemoth and Bivouac .

At Caulfield, a star-studded field will contest one of the most coveted staying events in the world, the $5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m). Star mare Verry Elleegant will start as one of the favourites after her classy Turnbull Stakes victory, but faces a host of challengers led by Master of Wine , Dalasan , Finche , and Irish raiders Anthony Van Dyck and Buckhurst .

Australia’s pre-eminent broadcaster Bruce McAvaney will again lead racing’s undisputed No.1 team on Saturday, which also features Hamish McLachlan , Michelle Payne and prominent Victorian trainer Henry Dwyer at Caulfield, along with Gerard Middleton , Katelyn Mallyon and Richard Freedman at Randwick.

Once again bringing fans all the news and interviews will be racing’s best trackside reporters, Jason Richardson at Caulfield and Sky Racing’s Lizzie Jelfs at Randwick, while Emma Vosti and Kate Waterhouse will also be at Caulfield and Randwick respectively to keep viewers across all the latest fashions and styles around the course.

It was announced today that this year’s Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship, both of which were due to be shown on Seven, had been cancelled due to COVID-19.

According to a feature interview with Bruce McAvaney in today’s Herald Sun, he will be in The Gabba all day as part of Seven’s horse racing and AFL finals coverage. He will take part in Seven’s telecast of Caulfield Cup and The Everest from a small specially-built studio at The Gabba, before calling tonight’s preliminary final between Brisbane Lions and Geelong with Brian Taylor at the usual set.

Cox Plate legend Hugh Bowman joins Racing’s No.1 team for Aussie sport’s greatest day

The 100th Cox Plate and 2020 AFL Grand Final

LIVE & FREE on Seven: Saturday from 9.00am AEDT

Hugh Bowman will bring his unrivalled Cox Plate knowledge to Seven’s world-leading coverage this Saturday in a huge win for sports fans, with the champion jockey joining racing’s premier team as an expert commentator for one of the Spring Racing Carnival’s greatest days.

Bowman will forever be synonymous with the Cox Plate and Moonee Valley after piloting legendary mare Winx to her four consecutive wins in Australasia’s weight-for-age championship from 2015-18.

Joining Seven for Saturday’s iconic Cox Plate Day at Moonee Valley and Bondi Stakes Day at Randwick, Bowman boasts a remarkable racing CV that includes 97 Group 1 winners, the 2017 Longines World’s Best Jockey Award and induction into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2019.

Saturday will be an unprecedented day in Australian sport, with Seven also bringing fans the only premiership decider that truly stops a nation – the 2020 AFL Grand Final between competition heavyweights Richmond and Geelong .

Managing Director Seven Melbourne and Head of Network Sport Lewis Martin commented:

“Nobody knows the Cox Plate and Moonee Valley like Hugh Bowman, so we couldn’t be more excited to bring him on board for the historic 100th running of the Cox Plate. To add Hugh to a commentary team that’s already hands down the best in racing is a massive coup for Seven, and only adds to the sense of occasion that surrounds this Saturday – a day destined to go down as the greatest in Australian sporting history.”

Seven’s racing coverage kicks off this Saturday at 11.30am AEDT on Channel 7, 7TWO and 7plus, when the highlight from a big day at Randwick is the $1 million Bondi Stakes for three-year-olds.

In keeping with such a landmark day, Seven’s LIVE and FREE coverage will run non-stop from the Weekend Sunrise AFL Grand Final edition at 9.00am AEDT until all the Grand Final post-match presentations and celebrations have finally wound up at about 11.00pm.

And the Cox Plate Carnival will get off to an early start this Friday night when Seven broadcasts one of spring’s most prestigious sprint races, the Manikato Stakes , for the first time ever from 8.00pm AEDT on 7TWO and 7plus.

Well no, Seven’s broadcast the Manikato previously including the very first in 1984 (technically the race is older but adopted the name following Manikato’s death). It’s the first time they’ve broadcast the Cox Plate eve races. Nine tried but it was not a ratings success.

That must’ve been the first year of the Cox Plate Carnival in 2012, which that year was Nine’s last year broadcasting Melbourne’s Spring Racing Carnival.

Seven will feature All Australian playlist across historic AFL Grand Final-Cox Plate coverage

Aussie rock classics to play all day long on Saturday

From The Masters Apprentices to Lime Cordiale , sports fans and music lovers are in for a special treat on Saturday as the best Aussie artists and bands across the generations take centre stage on our nation’s biggest sporting day ever.

This year’s AFL Grand Final foes Richmond and Geelong know better than anyone it’s a long way to the top, but fans are in for one perfect day when Seven’s LIVE and FREE coverage kicks off at 10.00am AEDT this Saturday.

On a historic day of Australian sport when the iconic Cox Plate and AFL Grand Final will share the same spotlight for the first time ever, Seven will mark the momentous occasion by featuring the greatest Aussie songs of all time, including a special live performance by Aussie rock legend Daryl Braithwaite of his smash hit Horses at Moonee Valley.

From the time The AFL Grand Final Brunch hosted by Luke Darcy and Jacqui Felgate kick-starts the day, right up until the post-match Grand Final celebrations finally wind up at about 11.00pm AEDT, Seven’s coverage will feature nothing but rolled gold Aussie classics that will have people of all ages singing and bopping along.

Braithwaite is thrilled to back at Moonee Valley for the 100th edition of the Cox Plate:

“It will obviously be a different day for the band and I, but it will be great to perform again at the Cox Plate. And Seven playing all Aussie music all day on Saturday will be stupendous. I’m sure it will bring back a lot of memories for people and it will go well with the racing and the footy – it’s just a shame Collingwood won’t be in the Grand Final.”

Channel Seven AFL commentator and resident music lover Matthew Richardson said:

“Music has been a big part of our broadcast this year and nothing brings Aussies together more than sport and music. On Saturday, it won’t be about whether it’s Queensland music, Victorian music or Sydney music, it will just be Aussie music for all Aussies – and I can’t wait.”

Interesting he says “after the ashes”, so maybe Seven won’t terminate their contract with CA?

They’ll be showing the 2021/22 Ashes and heavily promoting the Beijing Winter Olympics during that year’s summer of cricket

They are doing everything to hold up their end of the bargain currently. They don’t want to give CA anything that can be used against them by suggesting they have already checked out of the deal. I don’t think it guarantees anything.

But The Ashes won’t be in ratings period?
