Anyone know how the NFL overseas broadcast rights work?

It’s split this year here between FTA and Foxtel, do they negotiate with NFL in the US or their Australian arm? Also, apparently NFL produce a ‘world feed’, so who broadcasts and/or streams that? As Seven are taking the official Fox broadcast from the US (what are ESPN Australia using?)

Yes. The picture on Seven is shockingly bad.

NFL produces a world feed via the NFL Network (which doesn’t go to air in the US).

ESPN AUS/NZ takes a specially produced output from their Monday Night Football team for the Australia/NZ market.

I assume 7 has the option of taking either the world feed or Fox. Probably chose Fox because its broadcast team is more familiar. I think there was one year where they switched feeds midgame.

One of MLB/NHL makes it mandatory for the world feed to be taken for its championship series’s

We got the same coverage in the MLB championship series that the US got

Must be NHL then.

Pretty sure its the MLB who requires the world feed to be shown for the World Series

I’m pretty sure we got the TBS and FOX coverage

ESPN showed TBS and Fox feeds for the NLCS and ALCS championships. World Series was world feed. The lack of Joe Buck disappoints me every World Series!

It was OK in the early part of the century when they had Gary Thorne commentating (better known as a hockey caller on ESPN, now basically does Baltimore Orioles baseball) but they’ve gone to Matt Vasgersian (I think) in recent years who’s a little blander.

Fox Sports in Latin America used NFL Network graphics as opposed to Fox Sports

I think most English speaking countries opt for Fox broadcast (or whatever US network is broadcasting ATM) because they want the same commentary as the US broadcast.

In the UK for when Channel 4 used to have the rights, C4 took the NFL network world feed and Sky had the feed of the US broadcaster, which never was popular with fans. Now that the BBC has the NFL FTA rights they also use the US network feed.

World Surfing on 7 in 2020. Announced on Sunrise this morning. Live and on 7plus

More niche and money-wasting acquisitions.

Shouldn’t they be trimming the fat by getting rid of these kind of rights rather than purchase them?

World Surfing League and its predecessors have been a programming staple on Nine on Sunday mornings for many years, mostly highlights which air weeks after the actual event.

I doubt 7 would have paid a lot for them. My guess is they will be non exclusive too as WSL’s own streaming coverage does quite well through their own channels.

A source close to negotiations told the Herald RA and Channel Seven negotiated a deal that will see the governing body convert its $250,000 per year commitment to advertising spend, allowing RA to promote Wallabies Tests, Super Rugby Tests and other games on the free-to-air network for the final five years of the deal.

WSL and Seven Network Set to Deliver Surfing to More Australians Than Ever in 2020

Landmark deal to see Seven broadcast live WSL events and highlight shows throughout the 2020 season.

COOLANGATTA, QLD/AUS (Wednesday, February 12, 2020) - The World Surf League (WSL) is proud to announce that the Seven Network will be the exclusive Australian free-to-air Television Broadcasting Partner for all things WSL in 2020. The deal will see Seven broadcast WSL programming including live contests and highlights shows across the Seven Network and their online streaming platform 7plus.

“We see 2020 as a huge year for audience growth in surfing,” said WSL Asia Pacific General Manager, Andrew Stark. “With the introduction of the WSL Challenger Series and WSL Big Wave At Large, and a new exotic location on the Championship Tour, not to mention the Olympics – this will be the most exciting year in surfing, and we couldn’t be happier to have Seven onboard as a key partner for the ride. As Australia’s most iconic sporting broadcaster and an organisation with a passion for surfing, Seven are the perfect partner to bring our sport to the masses in a country that already has saltwater in its DNA.”

Seven’s coverage of WSL content will begin with the WSL Noosa Longboard World Tour event and continue into the Qualifying Series and then Challenger Series events in Sydney and New Zealand on 7plus. All 12 stops of the elite Championship Tour will also be live on 7plus, beginning with the Corona Open Gold Coast in March and climaxing in Hawaii with the Hawaii Pro and Billabong Pipeline Masters in December. Managing Director Seven Melbourne and Head of Network Sport, Lewis Martin, said, “we’re thrilled to be showcasing the WSL on Seven. Surfing is one of Australia’s favourite sports, and 2020 is a marquee year for the sport, with its debut in the Olympics in Tokyo. As the home of Australia’s most-loved sports and Tokyo 2020, we’re delighted to be bringing the WSL to Australian audiences.”

In addition to live events, 2020 will also see Seven launch World Surf News Weekly on 7Mate, which will feature event recaps, a pre-season preview show, weekly newsreels, and athlete profiles.

“I grew up watching all of my favourite sports on Channel 7,” said current WSL No. 1 Australian, male Owen Wright. “Sunrise was always on the telly before school and before my surfs so to compete on Seven now is really cool. For all of us on tour to have a platform like Seven to perform on is something I would only have dreamt of and I hope there will be more grommets watching us and being inspired to pick up a board and go surfing.”

The first WSL event to be broadcast live on 7plus, the WSL Noosa Longboard Open, will run from February 22 - 25. The first WSL Challenger Series event, the Sydney Surf Pro, will commence on March 8. The elite Championship Tour will kick off at the Corona Open Gold Coast on March 26.
