Why was today’s Davis Cup coverage held in Melbourne (Todd Woodbridge and John Fitzgerald hosted from AFL GameDay studio)? Is there not studio space at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre? Seven’s coverage of the Sydney International each January comes from the venue with no problems at all.
The tie at Kooyong was covered the same way. Maybe it’s a rights issue since they’re not the host broadcaster and just the a feed?
Horse Racing Today is from the AFL Game Day Studio
Surely it’s time for Seven to update that set, they use it for AFL Game Day (main purpose), Talking Footy, Horse Racing and whenever Sunrise broadcasts from HSV7. It’s almost 7 years old now, maybe longer?
###Caulfield Cup Carnival
Seven’s LIVE coverage of the Melbourne Racing Club’s Caulfield Cup Carnival begins this weekend, launching off in style with Caulfield Guineas Day.
All eyes will be on Champion Mare Winx, as she takes the stage at Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas Day. Lining up against only two other competitors in the Group 1 2000m Caulfield Stakes, Winx will be chasing down her 12th consecutive win. The prestigious Caulfield Guineas Day sees four Group 1 events unfold - Caulfield Stakes, Caulfield Guineas, the Thousand Guineas and the Toorak Handicap.
Seven’s coverage will be hosted by Bruce McAvaney, with expert analysis from Simon Marshall and Simon O’Donnell and International Racing Expert Francesca Cumani. Jason Richardson has all the news from the mounting yard, with James Jordan on the ground providing form analysis. Neil Kearney and Jade Robran are reporting on the colour and characters from the track.
Neil will also be catching up with young Caulfield trainer Henry Dwyer who saddles up Leotie in the Thousand Guineas.
Then, on Saturday October 15, one of the world’s richest handicaps and one of the biggest races of the year, The Caulfield Cup is LIVE on Seven. Joining the team will be Colour Reporter Rachael Finch, who will be working down from the track, beside Neil and Jade.
As the free-to-air home of thoroughbred horseracing Seven broadcasts every major meeting on the Australian calendar including the Magic Millions, Sydney Easter Carnival, Stradbroke Handicap, WS Cox Plate, and the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Great to have the races back! Love this time of year
Not sure how Ch 7 get their hands on everything, but they do.
Highest bidder
According to Mumbrella, Seven’s Melbourne Cup telecast will have a new rival this year, with Twitter streaming the race live around the world as part of its new partnership with the Victoria Racing Club. It will see Twitter carry a specially-produced hour-long live show created by Seven and commissioned by the VRC, which will be streamed globally to both its “logged in and logged out audience”.
EDIT: Pay TV lobby group ASTRA was not happy with the Twitter deal, warning it is only a matter of time before the brand scooped up more events and put them behind a paywall. Earlier this year, Twitter signed a deal with the National Football League in the US to stream live the Thursday night match from the 2016-17 season, which started last month. ASTRA CEO Andrew Maiden told Mumbrella that Twitter was not investing in Australia, but merely taking advantage of current laws surrounding sports’ anti-siphoning which do not affect digital streaming companies.
Cox Plate showdown
Champion mare Winx will be aiming for back-to-back Cox Plate wins on Saturday at Moonee Valley in the most anticipated race of the spring.
Hartnell will lead the challengers in Saturday’s $3m Group 1 weight-for-age race after winning his past three including the Turnbull Stakes to set up what will be an epic battle.
Neil Kearney and Rachael Finch are reporting on the colour and characters from the track.

I doubt it will happen tomorrow even with the rain that Melbourne has had in the last 24 hours (plus Moonee Valley responds better to the rain than Flemington), but I wonder how 7 (as opposed to 78) will telecast something if the race meeting is abandoned? Will they go main channel for the rescheduled meeting if it’s postponed like one of the big Sydney Autumn days were a couple of years ago, especially given MV has the option of going to a night meeting if necessary?
On the occasion you mentioned, pretty sure the rescheduled meeting aired on the main channel except in AFL states where it aired on 7Two due to the now-traditional Easter Monday AFL clash between Geelong v Hawthorn.
If that’s a precedent, you would think a rescheduled meeting would still air on Seven if possible.
Today’s Cox Plate meeting is still proceeding according to the event’s Twitter account. Gates have opened at Moonee Valley.
What a race. Great win by Winx.
That was unbelievable!
Biggest winning margin in the history of the race!
Found a rare cap from Ch 7’s 2005 Australian Open Men’s final, with Bruce McAvaney & Jim Courier
A few things happened here:
•Jim Courier joined the coverage.
•7 Sport logo (used until late 2011) was introduced.
•The game (which our own Lleyton Hewitt lost) remains the highest rating TV program since 2001, with more than 4 million people watching the telecast in the 5 main cities alone.
•It also started off a very competitive & high rating year, Blue Heelers also had a successful re-fresh.
