Cox Plate spot up for grabs as Spring Racing hots up on Seven

Saturday 12.00pm AEST – 7, 7TWO & 7plus

A coveted place in Australasia’s weight-for-age championship is on the line this Saturday at Moonee Valley’s Cox Plate Qualifier Day, while the LIVE and FREE Spring Racing on Seven also includes an action-packed day at Randwick headlined by the Chelmsford Stakes.

With the winner of the John F. Feehan Stakes (Group 2, 1600m) exempt from the ballot for the Cox Plate on October 24, a strong field will gather at Moonee Valley on Saturday to chase a start in one of sport’s greatest events.

Star stayer Surprise Baby is expected to be right in the mix, but will face stiff opposition from Harbour Views , Sircconi and Mahamedeis , who is chasing a hat-trick of wins, while multiple Group 1 winner Humidor can’t be discounted as he prepares to debut for the Chris Waller stable.

At Randwick, the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) shapes as a wide-open contest after attracting a capacity field of 16.

Godolphin gelding Avilius and Hawkes Racing stablemates Angel of Truth and Zebrowski are the top fancies, but master trainer Chris Waller has a very strong hand with nine runners headed by Mister Sea Wolf , Shared Ambition and Finche .

Australia’s pre-eminent broadcaster Bruce McAvaney will again lead racing’s best commentary team, which on Saturday features Hamish McLachlan , Katelyn Mallyon and prominent Victorian trainer Henry Dwyer . Jason Richardson and Sky Racing’s Lizzie Jelfs will also be trackside at Moonee Valley and Randwick respectively, bringing fans all the news and interviews.

Saturday’s other highlights include a trio of prestigious Group 2 races: the McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley, and the Furious Stakes (1200m) and Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.

I’m surprised Eddie’s talking about what Seven is doing …

At the end of tonight’s AFL telecast, Hamish paid tribute to veteran Seven Sport library manager Mike Langer, who passed away recently at 56.

NFL returns with epic double-header on Seven

The NFL roars back into action on Seven next Monday when a blockbuster double-header featuring competition powerhouse New England and Super Bowl LIV runner-up San Francisco will kick-start the 2020-21 season, while fans of America’s biggest sport can sign up now for the official fantasy competition, NFL Challenge.

The LIVE and FREE action starts at 3.00am AEST Monday, September 14, on 7mate and 7plus, with New England squaring off against Miami at Gillette Stadium. The Patriots are entering their first season in 20 years without the legendary Tom Brady and will be hoping replacement quarterback, 2015 MVP Cam Newton , can get their new era started with a win.

Then at 6.25am AEST star Aussie punter Mitch Wishnowsky and the 49ers will be driven by the pain of their devastating fadeout loss in last season’s Super Bowl as they look to get their 2020-21 campaign off to a fast start against the emerging Arizona Cardinals at Levi’s Stadium.

But first fans can put their NFL smarts to the test by entering a team in NFL Challenge at 7plus.com.au/NFLFantasy – and those who deliver on America’s biggest stage will win big! The regular season winners in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Perth and South Australia/Northern Territory will each receive a big-screen TV to the value of $3000, while weekly winners receive $500, a NFL merchandise pack up to $300 and a ball signed by former Aussie star Ben Graham.

Graham, a prodigious punter who became the first Australian to play in a Super Bowl in 2009, returns this season for NFL Armchair Experts , where every Monday after the live action on 7mate he and Cam Luke will preview the upcoming week of matches and break down the NFL’s burning issues on 7mate, 7plus and the @7Sport social channels.

Aussies to keep an eye on this season include Wishnowsky and fellow punters Michael Dickson (Seattle Seahawks), Cameron Johnson (Philadelphia Eagles) and former St Kilda forward Arryn Siposs (Detroit Lions), along with offensive tackle Jordan Mailata (Philadelphia Eagles) and defensive end Adam Gotsis (Jacksonville Jaguars).

Managing Director Seven Melbourne and Head of Network Sport Lewis Martin commented:

“The NFL is America’s biggest sporting stage and home to some of the world’s most iconic athletes. As ever, this season has some compelling storylines including Tom Brady starting afresh at Tampa Bay, Cam Newton taking over as New England quarterback and San Francisco seeking Super Bowl redemption, and we can’t wait to bring our viewers all the action. And this year we’ll be engaging fans like never before. We’re excited to have teamed up with the NFL to bring American football lovers the NFL / 7plus Fantasy Challenge. We’ve got some great prizes lined up and will be bringing the Seven audience closer to the NFL than they’ve ever been.”

Seven will broadcast two games LIVE and FREE each week during the regular season and the NFL playoffs, before bringing fans all the action, excitement and glamour of one of the world’s greatest sporting events – the Super Bowl.

All of these games will be live-streamed on 7plus, while fans can also catch up on the highlights and enjoy unmissable VOD content on 7plus, 7NEWS.com.au and @7Sport on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

And NFL lovers will enjoy a selection of programs on 7mate that take them inside both the action of the 2020-21 season and the game’s storied history, including NFL Hard Knocks: Los Angeles , while they’ll also have access to daily highlights and interviews on 7plus.

The return of Russian Camelot headlines huge day of Spring Racing on Seven

Saturday 12.00pm AEST – LIVE & FREE on 7, 7TWO & 7plus

Boom colt Russian Camelot makes his eagerly awaited return to racing in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington on Saturday, while race fans will also enjoy all the action of Run To The Rose Day at Rosehill Gardens LIVE and FREE on Seven.

Widely tipped to be one of this Spring Carnival’s biggest stars, the Danny O’Brien-trained colt will start favourite in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m), his first run since his spectacular win in May’s South Australian Derby (2500m).

Russian Camelot won’t have things all his own way, however, against a deep field that’s headed by Fierce Impact , Perfect Jewel , Dalasan , Kings Will Dream and Master of Wine , while his stablemate and star stayer Vow and Declare also can’t be discounted.

At Rosehill Gardens, a select group of three-year-olds will do battle in the Run To The Rose (1200m), when Golden Slipper winner Farnan will push his claims for a spot in the world’s richest race on turf, The Everest.

Farnan is expected to start favourite in the Group 2 feature, but will face stiff opposition from gun Queensland gelding Rothfire – already a confirmed starter in The Everest (October 17) – along with North Pacific and Peltzer .

Australia’s pre-eminent broadcaster Bruce McAvaney will again lead racing’s best commentary team, which on Saturday features Hamish McLachlan , Katelyn Mallyon and prominent Victorian trainer Henry Dwyer . Jason Richardson and Sky Racing’s Lizzie Jelfs will also be trackside at Flemington and Rosehill Gardens respectively, bringing fans all the news and interviews.

There’s plenty more tantalising Group 2 action on Saturday, including the Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m), Danehill Stakes (1200m) and Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) on Girls’ Day Out at Flemington, along with the Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) and Sheraco Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Following today’s announcement that the 2020 AFL Grand Final will start at 7.30pm AEDT on Saturday, October 24, the Moonee Valley Racing Club has confirmed this year’s Cox Plate will be run at 4.15pm AEDT on the same day.

I think we’ll see a schedule like this on October 24;

  • Midday to 5:00pm - Cox Plate Coverage
  • 5:00pm to 6:00pm - AFL Pre Match Coverage (with coverage moving to 7Mate at 6:00pm for however long the news will go for)
  • 6:00pm to 6:30pm (possibly) - Seven News
  • From 6:30pm - AFL Pre Match Coverage/Match Commences

I might be in the minority here, but I think that Seven should shift the Cox Plate to 7Mate, so that the main channel gets full exposure of the AFL. 7Mate’s shares would also get a boost from the horse racing.

This is what I would do for Seven’s main channel (70/71) in Melbourne on Saturday 24th October, if the Cox Plate goes to Channel 73/74:

7:00am-11:00am: Weekend Sunrise (extended by 1hr to 11am)
11:00am-1:00pm: AFL Game Day (special grand final edition)
1:00pm-5:00pm: AFL Grand Final Pre-Match
5:00pm-6:00pm: AFL Pre-Game Entertainment
6:00pm-6:30pm: Seven News
6:30pm-7:00pm: The Kick (grand final edition)
7:00pm-7:30pm: Toss of the coin, national anthem, pre-game warmups
7:30pm: GF 1st Quarter Commences

Would “AFL Game Day - Grand final edition” return? If so, id air it after Weekend Sunrise. Cox Plate then would air until 5pm (although, i haven zero interest in horse racing). News at 5pm. Entertainment at 5.30pm for an hour. The Kick/pre-game at 6.30. At 7pm, would be the anthems, coin toss etc. At 7.30pm, the game commences. 10pm would be the presentations and 10.15 the post match segment, which of course will go to midnight to capitalise the ratings share for Seven…

I think the coverage for the Cox Plate won’t even go that long.

Midday to 4:30-4:45pm - Cox Plate (coverage to continue on 7mate until finish)
4:00pm to 4:30-4:45pm - AFL Pre Match Coverage on 7mate
4:30-4:45pm to 6:00pm - AFL Pre Match Coverage (New on 7mate at 6pm like the twilight Prelim)
6:00pm to 7:30pm - AFL Pre Match Entertainment Show
6:25pm- Welcome to Country
6:26pm - AFL Retiring Legends tribute (whether it is a motorcade, on screen tribute etc)
6:35pm - AFL Pre Match Entertainment Begins
7:08pm - Up there Cazaly
7:13-7:16pm - Teams enter the Gabba
7:25pm - Presentation of the Premiership Cup by club legends
7:26pm - National Anthem
7:30 to 10pm - AFL Grand Final Coverage
10pm to 10:30pm - AFL Grand Final post match presentations
10:30pm - 7 News Grand Final Special Edition (Post match to continue on 7mate until finish)

I agree. Maybe they could just show the ‘races’ on the main chanel cutting into the coverage of the AFL Grand Final? So they literally have the AFL grand final and the host says, stick around but now to ‘Race 2 at Mooney Valley for the Cox Plate’- we’ll be back after the race. So that might take 5-10 minutes before returning?

I really don’t think the coverage will start that early though. Maybe midday or mid afternoon?

It’s normally a 10 race card on Cox Plate Day with 40 minutes between races. In the past coverage has been from midday to roughly 5:30pm - then switches over to 7TWO.

Plus this years telecast is a made for television event - as there probably won’t be any crowds allowed to attend. Also, don’t forget it’ll be the 100th running.

This is my take on the schedule for the day.

7

12pm-3:30pm: AFL GF Pre Match Coverage
3:30pm - 4:45pm: Cox Plate Coverage
4:45pm - 6pm: AFL GF Pre Match Coverage
6pm - 6:15pm: Seven News Update
6:15pm - 7:30pm: AFL GF Pre Match Coverage/ Entertainment
7:30pm - 10pm: AFL GF
10pm - 11:30pm: AFL GF Post Match

7Two

12pm - 6pm: Cox Plate Coverage

7mate

3:30pm - 7:30pm: AFL GF Pre Match Coverage.

Reminds me of Richie Benaud throwing to Flemington on the Saturdays of tests.
