Strong field set for Fred Best Classic on huge day of racing on Seven

LIVE and FREE – 11.00am AEST on 7, 7TWO and 7plus

The Brisbane Winter Carnival continues to heat up on Seven with the Group 3 Fred Best Classic headlining a tantalising card at Doomben on Saturday, while race fans can also catch all the action from Caulfield and Rosehill Gardens.

Dawn Passage heads a star-studded field of three-year-olds in the 1350m feature at Doomben, having won the Hawkesbury Guineas and Inglis Guineas in his two last starts.

Victory would earn the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained colt a prized spot in next Saturday’s Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap, but he faces stiff opposition from Godolphin filly Exhilarates , Chris Waller’s Subpoenaed , Grand Piano and The Odyssey .

Australia’s pre-eminent broadcaster Bruce McAvaney will lead Seven’s coverage on Saturday alongside Hamish McLachlan , Henry Dwyer and Katelyn Mallyon .

The other highlights on Chairman’s Cup Day at Doomben include the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) and the Listed Helen Coughlan Stakes (1200m), the latter race also earning its winner ballot exemption into the Stradbroke Handicap.

At Rosehill on Saturday, the Lord Mayor’s Cup (Listed, 2000m) headlines a big day of racing, with emergency Bottega set to jump as favourite if he gets a start, with Dr Drill , Sixties Groove , Yulong Prince and Ilwendo among the other leading contenders.

And a nine-race card at Caulfield includes the Nick Johnstone Real Estate Classic (1600m), where the Mick Price-Michael Kent stable will field the top three fancies in Right You Are , Smoke Bomb and Librate. .

Moonee Valley Racing Club CEO Michael Browell has told the Herald Sun that the club had told the AFL and Seven its preferred option was to run this year’s Cox Plate during daytime, allowing the AFL Grand Final to be held at night, and only a “compelling” case from AFL officials to play a day Grand Final could move the Cox Plate to a nighttime running.

The new watermark is too big and too wide.

Will they use the watermark on all channels or just 7, with the old 7Mate/7Two/etc. on the other channels?

Good question. They used to put the white/red 7 Sports watermark on the multi’s until one day they designed the 7TWO and 7mate ones. Nine has always used the 9 WWOS one on their multi’s, but WIN went the opposite way back before 2016 when they designed their own GEM WWOS watermark, which was weird as it promoted a Nine brand instead of their own WIN brand.

I guess we’ll see tonight in Sydney/Brisbane!

Budget cuts? It’s still under copyright so Seven would have been paying to use it.

Seven’s Winter Racing set to shine on

Starts Saturday LIVE & FREE – 11.00am AEST on 7, 7TWO and 7plus

In a massive coup for sports fans, Seven’s expanded 2020 racing coverage has been extended even further to include all the LIVE and FREE action from Melbourne and Sydney over the next two weeks.

In early May, Seven bolstered its coverage to bring viewers all the very best racing from Melbourne and Sydney, along with Adelaide’s iconic Autumn Carnival and the pinnacle of Queensland racing, the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

Fans have relished being able to watch such prestigious meets LIVE and FREE nationally and they can now enjoy two more weeks of high-calibre racing, starting this Saturday at Flemington and Royal Randwick.

Managing Director Seven Melbourne and Head of Network Sport Lewis Martin commented:

“Racing was a rare ray of light for sports fans during the lockdown period as one of the few live sports in the world that continued almost uninterrupted. In that time, we’ve witnessed some thrilling racing and seen a few rising stars emerge, so we’re rapt to extend our coverage again in collaboration with our partners Racing.com and Sky Racing.”

Seven’s broadcast this Saturday will be led by Nigel Carmody , Henry Dwyer and Katelyn Mallyon .

At Flemington, Country Race Day will be headlined by the A.R. Creswick Stakes (Listed, 1200m). King of Hastings , Broadwayandfourth and Run to Perfection are the leading fancies, but don’t discount Michael Moroney stablemates Alburq and Hawker Hurricane , Front Page , who is looking to make it three wins in a row, and last-start winner Kalkarni Royale .

The Adam Lindsay Gordon Handicap (1100m) is among the other highlights at Flemington, where Udyta Clarke ’s crowd favourite Rich Charm will take on a strong field headed by Order of Command and Prezado .

Randwick is hosting Winter Dash Race Day, where the 1200m feature promises to be a hotly contested affair between the likes of Southern Lad , Viridine , Invictus Prince and the ever-reliable Redouble .

Flicked over to Racing .com last night and managed to catch Jason Richardson and the host discussing the extended broadcast deal (they’d probably been drip-fed from Lewis Martin or publicity).

Basically they said because there’s no Saturday afternoon football (well, there actually is in some Seven markets and AFL and NRL certainly do on Foxtel) as well as apparently rating well on the Seven channels and Racing. com digital numbers (which are obviously internal and we don’t know, including Channel 78). They also commented on the synergy of having both the Sydney and Melbourne races.

Nigel Carmody hosting the races? Really??

Not sure what Hamish is doing on Saturday. He could have been able to host the racing.

Or Bruce? Or Richo?

As Sully posted above, Richo has been hosting overnight racing from Royal Ascot this week.
