What exactly is the point of this comment? Are you saying Bruce McAvaney doesn’t deserve the universal recognition he regularly gets as a highly respected and long serving Australian sports caller, because “Sydney don’t really care” and that statement is really according to… Just yourself?
There could be a back-lash by the public at the decision(s) though, as I heard one radio caller suggest. I think many if not most fans wanted a postponement rather than ‘business as usual’ with no crowds.
The traditional first game between Richmond and Carlton is always huge, 90-100 thousand crowd at the MCG, atmosphere is incredible. It’s going to look and sound so weird. And the commercial impact from that missing crowd(s) will affect the AFL and MCG financially anyway.
Random tailback callers on 3aw should be last people we take any notice of. Was that the biologist who’s studied virology who phoned Denis Walter last night? He was sprouting complete nonsense.

As much as I don’t watch the NRL, I hope its time for a change in broadcaster. CHannel 9 had the coverage for too long and treated coverage with contempt.
Their streaming platforms on 9Now are good and can stream it in HD. However, Tasmania, VIC, SA and WA didn’t have the post-match interviews. Instead, they cut off telecast after the final siren. On several State of Origin nights, VIC, SA and Tasmania cut off the post-match presentation and instead went to Footy Show. The sooner Nine loses the rights, the better.
It’s been obvious to me that Seven have been interested in the NRL broadcast rights since mid-March when it was announced the network signed up Bill Harrigan, Brett Kimmorley, Craig Wing, Mark Geyer, Robbie Farah and Tim Mannah for their news coverage of the game.
After being the main FTA broadcaster of rugby league for the better part of three decades (there would be many fans of the game today who haven’t known it being anywhere else but on Nine), it’s probably about time that Nine no longer had the NRL broadcast rights.
Nine have a very long track record of poor rugby league coverage even in NSW & Queensland, remembering the bad old days when there was no live coverage of regular season matches.
Things have improved marginally in recent years, but it was still pretty bad how Sunday Football aired on delay until 2015 (I think)!
