Nah, thereâs a huge sleaze factor with this that the 60 minutes incidents of misconduct did not have. Itâs cut through too, notably with the help of news and nine. The combination of the Spotlight sleaze and their dodgy transphobic story last year has done a lot of damage.
The show is done.
On the slim chance the name continues the edgy concept it has had since inception wonât be there anymore. More than likely the journalists that gave it that factor will roll, most have already gone.
It doesnât have the social capital that 60 Minutes has built up over decades that have keep it going when errors have been made.
Most of the public donât really care they just want the grub to get justice.
Many wouldâve even know the brand Spotlight, whereas 60 Mins made its name back when FTA tv was at its height.
Did the Spotlight brand come about once Sunday Night ceased?
If Spotlight does go, then Seven will just have another name for this type of show.
But i think the direction of Spotlight these days is to be more of a Q & A / Discussion show, like the referendum special late last year
Agree - Iâve never ever heard anyone call the show this. Remembering that the vast, vast majority of Australians do not watch FTA
Problem with this is that this term is already saved for those important 6pm articles on how to save on your groceries and put money back in YOUR pocket (with stock footage of âconfusedâ elderly couple shuffling through paper bills)
Itâs a hugely forgettable program and Liam Bartlett seems to either be a nasty piece of work or a useful idiot for management.
Seven would be better of axing it and doing something new - similar to the Cheap Seats. Review of last week/what might happen next week. Live, funny and made in Melbourne to build some cred in that market.
They could call it The Chat Room
Iâm not sure this would be the best path, whenever Ch7 try to copy another networkâs show (rather than licensing the actual show), there has been some very forgettable attempts.
by edgy, do you mean it being a shoulder to cry on for men accused of wrongdoing?
I donât think 7 will want to walk away from these more investigative programs, but they will need a complete overhaul of how the entire chain is done. They will need more senior management oversight when it comes to negotiations for interviews, and perhaps they need to write the 7 Network Code of Conduct.
The culture here at this program seems poor, the book needs to be rewritten it seems.
We are drawing alot of conclusions about the culture of the show from one story, from a journalist who at the time had only just joined the program.
Last year the program had its best year, and has only just recruited Sarah Greenhalgh. Assuming theyve got at least a few months of stories already in the can the show will be fine for at least the immediate future.
They could just resuscitate the Today Tonight to replace Spotlight as a 1 hour a week show!
That brand had pretty well been trashed by the end of its east coast run as well.
âSeven Daysâ is another possibility for a title ⌠Iâm not suggesting a replacement though.
Just bring back Sunday Night? It only got killed in the end because of the budget cuts where it got to the point of being presented in front of a green screen and then Mel Doyle leaving the network.
Bring back Mel too. SN with Mel would still rate it socks off.
Wouldnât you be better off to just keep Spotlight? Flip flopping on the name isnât going to go down well.
The court case looks to be a falling out between two former employees. If that outcome proves true, Spotlight may just survive.
Always found it weird. Spotlight is basically a cheaper version of Sunday Night.
Going forward, Seven need some sort of current affairs platform as audiences still like this content.
