It looks that way to me, but that is just based on one viewing.

I imagine 7QLD does something similar with the Brisbane bulletin given they run the same format?

I don’t know why they can’t do this with the NSWs bulletins.

To be honest, I thought the Melbourne editing looked a bit cheap.

I think the NSW bulletins are probably better off the way they are after seeing this.

It sounds like it hasn’t changed since Prime were doing playout in-house.

Back then, the Seven News Melbourne opener was cut down eliminating the headlines and just starting with the “this is Seven News with Peter Mitchell” voiceover over the Seven News logo at the end of the opener. Then as you observed, the segment would be cut at the end of a report. The commercial break was then adjusted on the fly to time into the sport segment live, and stayed with the live Melbourne bulletin from there on.

Seven provided a rundown of the Melbourne bulletin but it was often changed before airtime and we didn’t receive the updated version, so it wasn’t always useful. The decision on where to cut was generally made by Ingest based on timing. Presentation then had the work of timing into the live portion of the bulletin. Ingest usually recorded more of the bulletin than we ended up using. I recall one time when I was in Pres handling the Albury news playout and it became clear that Melbourne news’ middle segments were running later than usual, and the existing cut point of the first segment was going to leave us very short, so I asked Ingest to leave the backup tape running and I switched to that for one extra story from the opening segment before manually rolling to break and timing in from there. I think I still had to add a couple CSAs to the break to time in, but at least I didn’t have to add multiple minutes worth of them.

I thought the 6:30 NSW “national” news was a better viewing experience. I also thought it wouldn’t have hurt to give it to Albury as well by replacing some of the Sydney hyper-local packages which somehow made it into that bulletin with packages from the Melbourne bulletin, and adding the AFL reports which wouldn’t have been out of place for the NSW audience given we were the FTA AFL broadcaster. But that was above my paygrade.

They didn’t like my idea of having Prime Possum present the morning weather updates on April Fools Day either.

I havent seen it for a while but 7Q used to edit the first block (occasionally eliminating Brisbane- centric stories and/or live crosses. They would also pre-record a throw to break with a sports story and “latest weather with Tony Auden”. The it was live to sport/weather. The edits were usually pretty poor though and it was obvious the throw was recorded in a TOS.

When did WA go HD? Last I remember that bulletin wasn’t HD yet.
That backdrop looks even worse with the new OTS

Since they’re not going to give Regional WA any sort of real set, they might as well swap out the backdrop for a green screen.

10 makes it work in Adelaide, even Seven makes it work for their regional noodle updates.

I think it was earlier this year that WA VAST went HD on 7 … and thus so would the terrestrial transmissions as I think they are fed by VAST too, including the main ones at places like Bunbury and Albany etc.
