Does 4pm news really make a difference though? If midday news can be national, I dare say 4pm can.
And no doubt 9 will follow at some point, they’re not exactly immune to making cuts. And this one makes sense.

I agree with you. But until Nine joins them, Seven would suffer and if Nine can push it out long enough, viewers may sample Nine, become their local go to and make the switch long term. There is a reason that they copied each other and rolled out local news in all markets
Yes, but the Afternoon News bulletins get a larger audience tuning in. Number are usually higher than 10 News @ Five
Plus it is an important lead in to the Game Show Hour.
A wonder if Ann might see out her contract doing Midday and 4PM. You’d think she’s paid more than Alex is.
Also assuming she was safe from the axe yesterday.
Belling has been treated so poorly the past decade or so, she deserves so much better. Rather shocked she was one of the names, thought she’d comfortably cemented her place in that national midday chair and seemed to be working.
But I’d guess it’s her salary and cost savings (AKA upcoming NRL and other content deal bids), rather than personal and ratings performance.
Hope Nine, Sky or ABC News nab her! ![]()
Also, national vs local probably won’t make a difference in Sydney and Brisbane because Seven is already rating so low. But in Perth and Adelaide, there is a risk viewers will switch to Nine’s local version. Seven was punished in Adelaide in 2020 when they broadcasted Melbourne’s afternoon bulletin instead. It took them a while to recover.
I’m hoping Nine. She might be the new face of Fri- Sat News and fill in for Petey.
Reunite Tarsh and Deb, first time since 2011 and can relate about axings and treatment
I actually came here to say that. She has been screwed over at every turn. Professionalism from Tarsh right to the end in every job she has been given.
The days of lucrative contracts are long gone. Here is the offer, oh and it’s the first and final offer. The days of going back and forth with agents are over, the only going back and forth is working out the final day of work should you not wish to accept.
Isn’t Nine News Sydney also slashing staff left, right and centre at the moment? I’d say Deborah Knight, Mark Burrows, or even Jane Azzopardi would be frontrunners for that role before they look externally and spend a small fortune they don’t seem to have.
All networks are slashing staff. It’s not a great look with rivals are cutting then go hire someone from a rival who was cut.
Networks need to just make do with who they have on the payroll.
Cuts or ‘rightsizing’ will just be the new norm. I’m in corporate large asx, and we have been cutting almost every year for the last 5 years.
Most people who go into this field of work understand the pros and cons.
At 10 she survived a number of restructures for 2 decades until her time was up.
She is smart and a great talent, shell find something soon. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sunrise still use her for fill in work over the summer.
Not at SBS or Sky News.
As someone who recently took voluntary redundancy from a very small NFP I can also confirm this is a widespread thing. Sadly this also means no-one’s hiring so trying to find another job (and a suitable one at that) will be like searching for a needle in a haystack…
Today’s article.
Some of Seven News’ best-known names have been axed as one of Australia’s most powerful media companies cuts hundreds of employees.
Sounds like some of the SCM shareholders like Sandon called time on Seven TV operating in the hole. Sad for the staff but when you work in an unprofitable business your days are numbered. I feel for the TV staffers that are in single income households or both income earners work in TV
Must have gone immediately!
Bethan Yeoman sacked while on maternity leave.
