I saw one of her reports for the first time tonight and thought the same thing. Her style was like something from a current affairs parody show like Frontline.
Apparently from the Daily Tele which probably explains the tabloid reporting style.

Apologies, I saw the report again this morning and there was a comma. All too often I hear reporters say things that are grammatically incorrect and it really frustrates me because these people should know better.
Again, my mistake, sorry.
Thursday, January 15, 2026: Hugh Whitfeld on Sydney 6PM News. Most likely to give Angie a break & to get the roster in order for Mark’s return
Huh?![]()
Because Angie does the Fri & Sat bulletins. Putting Hugh on until Saturday would fix the roster (and eh, screw it put Paul Kadak on weather Sun-Tue to give Angie a break aswell). Unless Musher makes a return on Friday
As we know, Matt White is doing the Sports while Mel is away on holidays. White has just mentioned on McKnight Tonight’s Show that this role is for three weeks. Not sure if the duration time had been mentioned in here before.
Friday, January 16 2026 & Saturday, January 17 2026: Hugh Whitfield in Sydney
P.s. Sam Payne in the elements at Avalon
Hugh is one of Seven’s top tier talents, IMO. Excellent journalist and presenter.
Like many past foreign correspondents before him, Hugh has the potential to become a full-time presenter on any bulletin/program rather than just filling in, as we’ve seen with Chris Reason (some of our older members may or may not remember that he was once London bureau chief in the 90s), Mike Amor, David Woiwod and Sarah Greenhalgh.
Mark Ferguson was also once London correspondent during his time at Nine in the 90s, while Joel Dry (now back at Nine) occasionally reported for Seven News from the UK capital despite not officially being European correspondent (this was while his wife, Jessica Millward, was Nine’s European correspondent).
Isn’t Hugh running that so called “National News Desk” behind the scenes or has that been discontinued?
I’d say that the National News Desk has been discontinued.
Not 100% sure about the national news desk, but isn’t he still Seven’s Foreign Editor?
And they are still sticking with Blake Johnson as the ‘aviation editor’. So.. looks like this National News Desk titles haven’t been retired. I don’t think we need a Property editor either. Again.. another stupid idea left by De Cegile ![]()
This so called “national news desk” was created as a cost cutting move to streamline local editions more with the same content.
It seems like local directors have taken back 100% control and choose to insert any national based stories they want into their respective bulletins. Example = Finance, consumer affairs and federal politics.
Yes I am fully aware of what is is. What I meant was that I am unsure if it is still a thing or not.
Health reports also. It’s an efficiency that makes sense.
I’ve certainly noticed in Brisbane. There are a lot fewer locally sourced reports with reporters that aren’t readily recognised.
Example:
How can something so small (that desk and “set”) look so big on-air?! ![]()
