Seven News Presenters and Reporters

So perhaps the rotation of Gold Coast Sports and Radio personalities was just an audition for a full time gig?

I don’t understand why the GC news warrants a separate sports presenter, do they really think it will lift the ratings? Surely Steve and Amanda can just do it, or get the Brisbane 6pm sports presenter to do it. Seems like a waste of money.

Interested to check out how Sally goes. Certainly an improvement of having it presented from Brisbane. Never quite as good as some in studio interaction. She’ll be up against long-standing Nine reporter Dominique Loudon.

Simple answer to your question is yes.
Why have separate sports presenters anywhere, why not get Rick and Sue to do it in Perth or Peter in Melbourne?
The Gold Coast isn’t exactly a sporting powerhouse (see: The Suns) but I see no reason not to have a sports presenter.
The addition of a ex sportsperson is a bit of stunt casting for ratings - which is not uncommon.

What’s the point of even broadcasting a bulletin, seems like a waste of money.

Because it boosts the SEQ 6pm ratings. The GC isn’t a standalone market, so local eyeballs tuning in at 5.30 and sticking around for the metro bulletin is a massive boost to their advertising revenue (because there’s a lot more viewers at 5.30 and a lot of them carry onto the 6pm bulletin).

I think it’s important to remember that these businesses are, above all, businesses. If it really was a waste of money then they wouldn’t bother - there is no obligation for them to provide a seperate GC news.

I think that sport presenters are valuable for the 6pm bulletins, but when it’s the 5.30pm GC news that is consistently beaten by Nine, one wonders whether they are just flogging a dead horse…and not to mention the fact that Sally is not a trained journalist/presenter.

The fact Seven pulled their GC news off the HD channel and only had it running on standard definition at one point shows just how much they value it…they should just pull the plug and reallocate resources elsewhere I think.

One would think Sally’s hire is a tactic to increase viewership though - to avoid being beaten. It also sets up their 6pm news hour on the GC too so the lead-in is important to get right.

As for not being a trained journalist/presenter… Needing a diploma/degree should be only one way of entering the industry.

Will have to wait to see exactly what role Sally plays but for Nine, Dominique does a lot more than read the sports. She attends training and events for the two coast-based football teams from where she files stories, sometimes live, plus interviews players and coaches so has access to stories early and sometimes exclusively. She is also fairly active in keeping the 9 News GC brand visible on social media.

Oh absolutely, that’s definitely why this has been done, but how much impact would a separate sports presenter for a two to three minute sports segment really make on the ratings? If they don’t want Steve and Amanda doing it and insist on a separate presenter, you could guarantee that the ratings would be the exact same if they got Shane Webcke or whoever is presenting Brisbane sport to do it.

Well I prefer him over Mel McLaughlin anyday. She must be in transit from Beijing. So not having her presenting the sport on Seven’s flagship bulletin will be short lived unfortunately.
