Update - did a quick check in The Latest thread, and it turns out Matt presented a couple of editions in April 2020 with Mel Doyle.
Matt also hosted some of the rolling coverage of the Queen’s death alongside Sally Bowrey under the 7News brand.
Yesterday would’ve been his first solo bulletin.

If they kept The Latest in Sydney, he would of made a great replacement for Ange. He has a style that matches the vibe of The Latest.

May have more capacity or interest to do some regular fill-in now? Maybe the network is looking to get more value out of existing presenters, we’ve seen EP’s, Chief of Staffs reporting etc.
He has only really been doing weekends for a while now, right?

That’s what I’m thinking.
He only does weekend mornings and Mon and Sally have been doing so much more for years now so they probably want the same out of Matt.

I suspect someone’s contract is up for renewal

Matt is Larry’s main fill in and alternates with Michael Usher to fill in for Shirvo. To say he only does weekends is not correct.

I’d say the new news boss has wised up to Matt’s rather empty schedule and is making him do more shifts, which is fair IMO. Also worth testing him as a Fergo/Mush sub or replacement down the line.

But he’s great on WS.
I agree, but you never know whats around the corner. Good to have him in the pocket.

The more work he gets the better IMO.
He makes the Weekend Sunrise team so fun to watch.
In fact, put him in the 6pm chair with Angela Cox.

Tim read the sport as usual this evening, but mentioned nothing about his future.

He reports on weekday Sunrise, too (when he’s not filling in for Shirvo). Good to see him being used on the other bulletins, though.
He used to do the Late News on 10, which had a similar vibe. I think he and Hamish MacDonald used to take it in turns.

Maybe the announcement has been delayed. Still trying trying to figure out who will replace him.

The speculation now is Tony Armstrong could be on his way to 7… Wouldn’t put it past them to parachute him into Tim Watson’s role.
