Definitely. Depending on what works for her… although that doesn’t seem to be a consideration these days… can’t be too picky or you might get the chop!
It’s not about Karina personally, it’s about the fact they’ve hired someone at all.
It could have been anyone and would still be unnecessary and offensive.
There has to be more to the story. I can’t see her just being a fill in presenter to the local Melbourne market and reporting on local car crash stories.
Some of the possibilities I’ve been thinking she could be involved in…
New Network Finance Presenter (from Melbourne)?
The Morning News may move south in 2025?
The Network could be launching live news updates / bulletins on 7plus and social media (made from Melbourne)?
I think some of us are really overthinking all this. I don’t think even the people at 7 have thought about things in as much granular detail as people here. Maybe let’s wait and see what transpires in the months ahead…? Strange idea, I know
The Australian says people are pissed about Karina’s appointment when others in the network are being shown the door.
Seven’s entertainment editor Wenlei Ma gave her assessment of the new Hugh Jackman andRyan Reynolds’ superhero film Deadpool & Wolverine during a news bulletin on the weekend, describing it as “over the top and silly” and awarding it three-and-a-half stars.
But, the angst among staff at Seven doesn’t end there. Melbourne news boss Chris Salter has hired former ABC presenter Karina Carvalho, an appointment one well-placed insider describedasan “ultimate kick in the guts” for axed stars, including Ghidella.
100%. Simply disgusting.
Absolutely
And when I’ve brought it up, I’ve been greeted with a laughing emoji by the childish GTV fanbois, who pretend 2022 and 2023 never happened and look at 2024-to-date…
Interesting decision making times ahead across Australian media.
They swapped Bill for Max pretty quickly.
Other swaps have happened pretty fast as well, Chris for Mark; Mel for Michael.
I think they could and should put Katrina in the chair asap.
Im not a GTV fanboi, if anything im a 7 fanboi (longtime loyal to Rick & Sue being from Perth) but I can’t watch him now im in Melbourne.
The “no change” arguement does not always hold water. In Melbourne, you could argue that Peter Hitchener, Tony Jones and Livinia Nixon who have been in their respective seats as long as Peter Mitchell, Tim Watson and Jane Bunn. Then again, switching to Alicia Loxley and Tom Steinfort proved a real winner, despite the doom and gloom predictions. Presenters and reporters are important, but the producers and all those behind the scenses is probably more important.
Just out of interest, why did Karina leave the ABC?
Carvalho has expressed concerns regarding ABC‘s editorial trajectory. She reportedly perceives a shift in her colleagues, leaning towards activism rather than maintaining journalistic neutrality.
So she signs up to Seven right in the middle of the time where it’s claimed to be at its most toxic?
Money money money
How come your picture is an S when your name is Lance? Should it be the letter L?
Has he even worked in a commercial newsroom before…?
Before ABC she apparently worked for the BBC in the UK.
Maybe the political leanings of 7 align more with her own?
Fair point.
There is no doubt that Karina left the ABC under a cloud. Usually when a respected journalist/presenter leaves after 17 years of service, there is much fuss made … a few speeches, flowers, a revue in pictures, etc. There was nothing on Karina’s last day!
By calling into question “the editorial trajectory” of her fellow colleagues (think Laura Tingle?), she has effectively dirtied the ABC nest. This is clearly a manifestation of what she calls her "journalistic neutrality’. She revealed in an interview with Benjamin Law last year (The Age and SMH), that to justify being neutral she doesn’t vote, merely has her name ticked off!
She was given a wonderful opportunity and grounding with the ABC, employed almost certainly under their diversity policy. The commercial channels are reluctantly only now starting to pursue tentative similar policies … Sarah Abo’s shift from the ABC/SBS to channel 9 being an excellent example.
The plus for the ABC was that it possibly saved another redundancy, and allowed their many female presenters a bit more scope for work, particularly after the axing of The Drum. It will be interesting to see whether Karina’s appointment will be a plus for Channel 7, as her last few years at the ABC lacked energy and engagement.
