Seven News Presenters and Reporters (2020-Feb 2025)

Because the circumstances are completely different and when companies shedding hundreds of employees, its not just “oh you had a bad season we aren’t renewing your contract”.
People are losing jobs because of the current state of the advertising industry which has a flow on effect throughout the networks. You cant just assume because one presenter has been made redundant because of this situation that “Oh I bet Michael Usher is nervous” what is the logic or reasoning why you would question that. Just because hes employed?
Would be like me saying the same thing about your job if there are layoffs… and picking random people.

Same could be asked for multiple presenters across the landscape over the years. Their contracts allow it, but they get paid out the remainder.

I’m not talking about the off-air and reporter staff who have sadly lost their jobs in recent cuts. I’m just asking why a media forum speculating on whether a presenter is next to be moved on is any different to sport player or coach speculation?

On air or off air, it’s the same reason they are losing their jobs.

Just because a topic can be discussed doesn’t always mean it should be? I mean where is the fine line to treat people with respect then speculation when they are to get the chop with no substantial reason or evidence as to why.

In a lot of ways MBB raises some good points going forward.

We need to tread carefully over the next few months. I feel this is the beginning of what we’ll be seeing industry wide.

They’re probably still paying her a notice period or something, she’s just been taken off air.

Very correct particularly as some of those people probably look at these threads too.

Once TV and radio stations were top shelf jobs for 20 somethings - I doubt that is the case any longer. They are just plain unreliable places for anyone to work.

Really they were never great places to work - in the past some outrageous bullies have plied their trade very successfully, particularly in TV.

As a 23yo when I relocated interstate for a TV job, I had first hand experience of one of these people - they almost inevitably have a high up protector who comes sprinting in from the sidelines every time someone tries to take the bully to task about their outrageous behavoir. You leave my little mate alone he is wonderful etc etc.

I doubt much has changed since then and may possibly have gotten worse.

Currently there is a bit of discussion around about sexual harassment in TV and in my experience the workplace bullies were often also sexual harassers - not all were male either.

When staffers feel(sometimes rightly) they are above ever getting sacked that kind of behaviour thrives.

Compounding things is the government licensing regime which prevents disgruntled former staffers setting up rival businesses - if that had been possible 10/9/7/WIN/SCA would have been put out of business by competition years ago.

When you get to a certain salary point, they’ll get rid of you whenever they want.

The Australian

Veteran Seven newsreader Sharyn Ghidella only recently took part in shooting new ‘promos’ to help pump up the network’s 6pm Brisbane news bulletin alongside her co-presenter Max Futcher, so she understandably thought her position behind the desk was secure.

But fast forward a few weeks and Ghidella is without a job and the promos are on the scrap heap.

Of course, shooting TV promos isn’t cheap, when you add up the cost of hair, make-up, lighting, sound, different locations, shoots, and so on.

So to junk an expensive promo seems at odds with De Ceglie’s cost-cutting mission, which has seen him take the knife to company’s newsrooms around the country.

Sources told Diary that Ghidella, 58, was “hurt” by the way her sacking was handled and was completely “blindsided” by the decision to dump her mid week, after a 17-year stretch as the network’s Brisbane news anchor.

She was given her marching orders on Wednesday via an early morning phone call – not from De Ceglie but via Seven’s news director Michael Coombes.

To rub salt into the wounds, personal items belonging to Ghidella were quickly boxed up at Seven’s Mt Coot-Tha studios following her sacking and sources close to the newsreader have told Diary that it’s highly unlikely she will return to the TV station to collect her goods.

The frontrunners to replace Ghidella – should Seven opt to continue with an on-air duo – include other female presenters at the network, Katrina Blowers and Samantha Heathwood.

I’m sorry… “The frontrunners to replace Ghidella”.
She’s being REPLACED?

I thought the intention was to go solo? Why sack her? Couldn’t negotiate salary?

Yeah, she was always going to be replaced wasn’t she?

This is all about Sharyn’s wage. The other ladies wages wouldn’t even be in the same ball park.

Seven wouldn’t dump a double header in Brisbane.

It does say “should Seven opt to continue with an on-air duo”. Certainly cheaper to use someone else already on the payroll.

I was under the impression from all the chatter here and the cost-cutting at Seven that they’d be going solo at 6pm.

Not the wisest of sources :stuck_out_tongue:

There’s no way Max alone can compete with the 15 year experience and team of Andrew and Melissa.

On that note though I don’t think Katrina or Sam are in the same league as them so it’s just a giant mess. They let the wrong host go.

My bad. Re-read the TVBB article which does state that “it is unclear whether Max will be anchoring solo or with another anchor”.
So options are open.

Waiting for Seven to let Peter Mitchell, Rosanna and either of Rick or Sue go though.

It’s only fair. Why just Sharyn of all of those people?

I think Katrina and Max would be great together… leave Samantha where she is on the weekends.

You can get both Katrina and Max for the price of Sharyn.

And Katrina, Max and Samantha could rotate through as presenter of 4pm… so no extra cost.

May as well sack them all, and have one national bulletin out of Sydney.

That’ll work.

Oh, wait…
