Saturday 29th August:
Mike Amor will be presenting the 5pm news today.
I noticed that Amber Laidler filed two reports in Sydney last night? Is this a regular occurrence, where a reporter files more than one report? Or was the Sydney newsroom just understaffed?
I think its been a bit more prevalent since the news went to 1 hour bulletins.
It happens occasionally on weekends, not a regular occurrence.
Sunday 30th August: Katrina Blowers is presenting the 5pm news out of the Brisbane studios today, with Matt Shirvington presenting sport.
I reckon that if Mel is not on holidays or simply having a day off, then I’m going to predict she’ll be presenting sport on Sunrise this week, with Matt Shirvington doing Seven News. Beretts hasn’t had time off for almost six months, and posted something on Instagram about going on a roadtrip, but for all we know the roadtrip might just be for the weekend and he’ll be back on Sunrise tomorrow morning. Will just have to wait and see…
Shirvo has a bigger national profile and had appeared on Sunrise at least once since he started with 7. They’d be better putting him on Sunrise and Mel on 4/6pm.
That’s a fair point, but the other thing too is that Sunrise tend to use the main Sydney sports presenter to fill in rather than the Friday & Saturday sport presenter.
Since the 2016 Sunrise relaunch, Jim Wilson never presented sport on Sunrise whereas Mel McLaughlin appeared a couple of times in 2017. Although that may change now and they decide to go with Shirvington.
I don’t really mind who they choose to fill in for Beretts when the time comes, but if it comes down to banter with the rest of the team and being the most relaxed in the role, then you’d opt for Matt Shirvington.
Re, Matt Shirvington: Barring unforeseeable circumstances, surely in the future we’ll be seeing him either as the main Sports presenter on Sunrise when Beretts retires or as Sydney’s main Sport presenter for the Sunday-Thursday 6pm + Monday-Thursday 4pm bulletins?
I for one, don’t think Seven would’ve made a big deal of signing Shirvo up to the network with a press release if there weren’t grander plans anyway…
Re Mel Doyle… (do we still discuss her here?) - she just posted a thankyou video for all the well wishes and comments. Makes me think there is definitely something coming for her.
I do agree Seven probably do have other plans for Matt down the track, starting off in his current role could lead to other high profile roles at the network.
If 9 could lock her in for Today, they could take #1 national breakfast in 2021.
…though he has presented sport on Weekend Sunrise, as recently as April/May this year, before they decided that Sally could do both.
Yes correct, I should have added in that they seem to use the Friday/Saturday sports presenter on Weekend Sunrise, and the Sunday-Thursday sports presenter on weekday Sunrise.
Mel McLaughlin has only presented sport on weekday Sunrise, never on Weekend Sunrise. And Jim Wilson most recently only presented sport on Weekend Sunrise. I do recall Jim presenting sport a few times when Beretts was absent around 2011/2012.
It was just a weekend roadtrip for Berett’s he is on Sunrise this morning.
Monday 31 August to Wednesday 2 September-
Angela Cox is presenting Morning News and Afternoon News in Sydney.
And Sean Sowerby is presenting sport (due to Jacqui Felgate anchoring Melbourne’s coronavirus coverage).
Mark Stevens is heading up to the Queensland hub tomorrow
Is he switching places with Tom Browne (so therefore Tom would return home to Melbourne)? Or perhaps Tom is just staying there until the end of the season.
It must be ages now since Tom Browne was last in Melbourne.
You may remember Stevens tried to fly to Queensland when the AFL began the hub there a few months ago but was refused entry at Gold Coast Airport, so he had to turn around and fly to Sydney where he filed a couple of reports, before returning to Melbourne. Now he gets another chance.
