So it may generally be anyone covering these type of reports? IMO Melbourne definitely need some new reporters though…
I seem to recall hearing that Sean Berry would take the NSW Politics reporting position quite quickly after Lee Jeloscek left, the fact something similar didn’t happen this time has made me wonder if such a position no longer exists.
It should though, why not
I think they are phasing them out. Geoff Parry in Perth was state political reporter and over a year ago they made him Chief Reporter.
If it’s true that Seven News are phasing out the position of State Political Reporters, then it’ll probably be to the detriment of their coverage quality in the long run - especially if the other networks (particularly Nine and the ABC) retain such positions within their services.
Sure, being a State Political Reporter probably isn’t quite as prestigious a role compared to being a Federal Political Reporter. But there’s still enough interesting stuff which goes on in the corridors of our state Parliament Houses to warrant quality coverage and at least one dedicated reporter IMO.
Brendan Donohoe joined Mike Amor at the news desk during the Afternoon News to talk about his career.
A very nice way to end his 30 years at Seven Melbourne with this on air farewell.
I can’t obviously speak from a national standpoint but in terms of Perth, while there are no “dedicated” state political reporters with the title they usually have the same reporters (Geoff Parry, Jessica Page) on rotation reporting political issues.
Sad to see that level of experience leaving the newsroom. Big loss.
Any idea who will replace him?
Hopefully if possible a talented reporter. As to who exactly, we’ll have to wait to find out…
If Brendan hadn’t said it, I won’t know that he once worked for TV Week! I think he became a state political reporter once he joined a newspaper.
Peter Mitchell has interviewed Brendan on his last day
I’m surprised he never went into Canberra?
Such a big loss for seven news Melbourne
