No. According to Michael Usherâs behind the scenes on the website it was specially designed for the night.
Yep, they had a new desk. The old one (big oval grey thing) was horrible.
So with all this election stuff going on at the moment, itâs kind of got me thinking. I donât recall who Seven had as their political editor prior to Mark Riley. I managed to find out that Mark joined the network in 2004 and had previous experience as a political correspondent in newspapers. But canât find whom he replaced at Seven.
Can anyone fill me in?
Glenn Milne? Iâm too young to actually remember, but he apparently was in 1999 based on this video of the Republic Referendum.
After you mentioned Glenn Milne, I came across the same video
But yeah I was young myself at the time too (hence why I donât remember prior to Mark Riley) although my parents television was always glued to Nine.
Glenn Milne was Chief political correspondent from 1996-2004.
Cheers for clarifying that. And if Iâm not mistaken, Laurie Oakes replaced Peter Harvey as Nineâs political chief?
Laurie was Nineâs Political Chief from December 1984 until his retirement in 2017.lâm not sure if he replaced Peter HarveyâŚ
But l do remember Peter reporting from Canberra but canât recall what decade it was.
Hmm Peter Harvey must have just been a political reporter.
I vaguely remember his famous sign off. And from memory (and upon watching a video) he finished his time in Canberra in 1997.
I do remember that pause during the sign off âPeter HarveyâŚCanberraâ.
I see a lot of similarities between Stan Grant and Michael Usherâs presenting style⌠just saying.
Agreed, they definitely have very similar styles of delivery.
Peter Harvey ran the Nine Canberra bureau for years and was the main political reporter before Laurie Oakes joined him from Ten. I remember Oakes reporting for Seven in the 1970s. Oakes and Harvey worked together until Harvey transferred to Sydney. I think Harvey was more likely to travel with the Prime Minister whereas Oakes was mostly Canberra based. There was gossip that there may have been some professional animosity between the two men and that may have led to Harvey leaving Canberra. I donât know if there is any truth to that. Oakes was certainly gracious towards Harvey in his comments following his death.
John Mangos had been in the Canberra bureau with Harvey during the early 1980s before he became Nineâs US correspondent for four or five years.
Sunday (19.05.2019) - Tuesday (21.05.2019): Jim Wilson presented Sydney sport.
Samantha Brett is filling in for Angie Asimus again this week.
Brisbane reporter Joel Dry is off. He has joined his wife Jessica Millward on their European holiday.
