I’m pretty sure that in the lead-up to the last Federal Election, Seven News Sydney was presented from the Rooty Hill RSL one night…I think with Fergo reading even though Bathie was still Sydney’s main newsreader at that time.
You might be thinking of the state election last year? There was the leaders debate at an RSL somewhere (remember the blank backstage backdrop followed by a sea of empty chairs?) and they did a bulletin from outside somewhere, Parramatta or Rouse Hill IIRC.
I can’t even remember the last time they did on OB in the city or eastern suburbs (not counting the siege). So many opportunities to with Vivid and other stuff going on right on their doorstep.
If I remember correctly he presented because Bathie was hosting “The Champions of The West” event. Oh the irony.
I thought 2014 was the first year for Champions of the West (ie after Chris’s knifing)?
Yeah, I remember the State Election Leaders Debate and that farce of a bulletin OB last year which I believe was held at a university (UWS, maybe?) rather than an RSL!
Yep, I completely agree that Seven should do an OB in/near the city for a major event at some stage. Aside from the siege, I think the last one that Seven did in/near the city was for the International Fleet Review around September/October 2013 (another one with Mark I think) but I’d have to check on that.
Yep, you’re 100% right.
Correct me if I’m wrong…BUT, isn’t the idea of an OB that you capture the current environment you are in within the background? And not sit in front of a green screen!!!
Don’t Seven News Sydney usually do OB’s from the Royal Easter Show every year?
They did present full bulletins there for one year (2010, and even then only for part of the event) but otherwise, generally no unless you count the weather being presented there.

Reason rates worse than Ferguson. He is not the answer.
Last night’s ratings suggest otherwise ( I know he was filling in for Melissa). Seven News rated closer to Nine News Sydney last night than two Saturday’s prior as well as when I averaged those two days. It will be interesting one night when Reaso fills in for Mark.
You’re comparing apples to oranges.

You’re comparing apples to oranges.
True but it does support my belief that Melissa Doyle won’t be able to take Seven News to number 1 ( I don’t think Chris Reason will though solely either). Let’s be honest, Seven News don’t have any potential currently employed staff to take them to number 1. Maybe that is one of the main reasons they won’t replace Fergo- like they did with Bath ( you don’t want to sack someone and replace they with a worse contender).
As well as a change of presenter, Seven News Sydney quite simply needs to become Seven News Sydney again…not “Seven News Western Sydney” or “Seven News Queensland 2.0” as it seems to be the case from the perspective of this viewer in recent times!
While there certainly ARE a number of talented presenters, reporters and crew at Seven News and I don’t think that the entire operation of the news service is universally bad, as a viewer unfortunately I’m generally disappointed more often than not by Sydney’s bulletin in it’s current format. So much so that while I usually like to watch all major local news bulletins on a regular basis, I’m watching Seven News Sydney less and less often these days.
In all honesty, I think it would be great if Seven News Sydney became #1 in the ratings again…but only if it’s committed to producing a news service that quality wise, is actually at least on par (preferably better, of course) than Nine’s Sydney 6pm bulletin. But that’s just my opinion, others may completely disagree with me.
I’ve said it many times before and I will say it again, Seven don’t have anyone on their books who can compete with Overton. Their best newsreader walked and until they address the main issue, content, they’ll continue to languish. Fancy graphics, backgrounds, desks etc mean diddly squat to the average viewer.
I find 7 News in Sydney quite messy - I’m not sure if they are slowly transitioning to new graphics but there’s such a strange eclectic mix being used. Sometimes the back screen has font, other times it’s an animated side title, other times there’s nothing except the blurry Sydney backdrop. Even when the weather is presented, they try to make it look like David Brown is using the side presentation screen but clearly he rushes over to a larger screen then returns at the end.
I don’t feel Mark Ferguson is strong and he is not connecting with Mel - last week he awkwardly corrected her on a point about Jarrod Hayne and it was uncomfortable to watch!
All in all I just find it messy and despite almost always having the lead in programme, it is still rating poorly.
I had higher hopes that Craig McPherson would do a lot more than he has…
Seven’s problem is simply that their evening bulletins are deathly boring.
All we keep seeing is more of the same mediocre garbage. It’s such a shame because there are sometimes glimpses of potential in the graphics and they have had a great opportunity with The Chase to make some major changes.
And it’s all just been wasted.
Sydney’s making the switch to Seven News with Mark Ferguson.
Last night’s ratings (especially with a whopping 100k gap between Seven and Nine at 6.30pm) clearly say otherwise.
Honestly, Seven needs to stop using the lead-in program(s) as an excuse and start working on improving the content of this currently over sensationalist, Western suburbs-centric news bulletin!
