Why not show new Modern Family at 7:30pm? Seven must be slowly giving up on this already.
MF should be stripped across 7flix or something, where it’d rate well (like Big Bang previously or ONE’s NCIS) and also in key demos.
Maybe its too expensive.

Yes, of course. They can do deals for multiple screenings of an episode but basically, they have to pay to screen it.

Looks less “laugh out loud” funny, more “warm and fuzzy feel good” funny.

Not necessarily? It’d depend on the type of content supply deal they have with their distributor.
For example, Seven’s long running output with Buena Vista/Disney ABC may not require payments per broadcast and may give them exclusivity, but rather require a stipulation as to how many times they can run a particular title? Apart from that and Nine’s long running output with Roadshow, most networks have indicated they’re just doing “cherry pick” deals with whatever provider.

Sounds like speculation rather than fact. There are various types of contracts but they are still paying to broadcast.
Sometimes they only pay for one broadcast of a new episode. Otherwise, they pay for a new episode and a number repeats within a certain amount of time. At other times, they may decide to purchase repeat rights later and repeat once or three times or five times depending on the popularity of the show.
Whatever the case, they pay for the broadcast. There are no freebies.

We know that the networks are no longer signing studio output deals but what we’re saying is you don’t know what kind of contract Seven have done exactly to screen Modern Family and all the other titles they picked up after Ten breached their contract.

Thanks for this guys. Very interesting. I gathered there was a payment for the rights but thought it encompassed an unlimited number of repeats until the agreement expired. Sounds like (apologies for stating what should have been obvious from the start) each agreement is unique.
I thought it would be more economical to do studio deals because I assumed the price of each title would be lower as opposed to if it was sold on an individual basis, but obviously not.
Maybe it was when people were watching American product on free to air but these days there are so many more options so people are not watching those American shows in big numbers. Those multi-million dollar contracts with the studios were no longer providing value for money and practically sent Ten broke.
It makes more sense for the networks to create Australian shows for free to air and cherry pick the best overseas shows as filler.

If I recall correctly, one of Nine’s programmers mentioned in an interview with TV Tonight within the last year that they can screen an episode twice within a set period of time and only pay for it once.
It was in reference to Nine showing a new episode of the Big Bang Theory on their primary channel, and repeating the same episode later that night, also on the primary channel.
