Seven Network 2025

Would have been nice to see a new Australian Drama announced.

Looks like lots of content (during AFL season) for AFL states but not as good for Sydney and Brisbane. Think this will give Nine a big boost in the NRL markets.

All the reality and entertainment content is Sydney based… so I think they’ll be okay.

when i was at cold chisel the other week i saw the cameras they used and thought they looked a little too professional for a concert setup. i was hoping it was being filmed to be released somehow

Same old, same old… No one at 7 has had an original idea for the past 40 years!

You can say the same thing about Nine’s primetime line-up. The difference is, that one is more successful because of massive ratings for MAFS and The Block, and also BVOD ratings for Love Island Australia and the NRL.

I mean, 10 at least has some variety with Sam Pang’s new show + range of entertainment shows.

I’m surprised 7 didn’t have more to announce today, not a lot of sizzle for advertisers really.

Lots of returning content (not necessarily a bad thing), lots of held over content from this year and supplementary programming to their key primetime slots - nothing really innovative.

At the very least, and considering they were quite quick off the mark with FAST in Australia, I would’ve thought a streaming news channel (using existing news & current affairs) might’ve had a look in.

Now time for a poll:

What do you think of Seven’s 2025 Line Up
  • The best out of the other’s
  • Alright - I’m sure there will be some more programs to be announced
  • Okay - Apart from the AFL, nothing too exciting
  • Bad

Sorry. But that’s a terrible upfront. Terrible.
I think we all know stranded is not going to work so their only other new hope in the Chris brown show which is not an anchor show. Micalleff on DWTS is purely a stunt and he will likely have a 2nd episode exit planned. Odd move for him and disappointed he obviously isn’t being touted for TBYG on ten. Only thing I like the look of is the new comedy show but that sort of show isn’t ever going to be huge on AU TV.

tBH I think nines upfronts were stronger and this may edge them ahead next year, but I really think tens has the most spark of all of them…problem is that just have no eyeballs on them

Nothing mentioned about 7Two going to HD!

Metropolitan areas probably won’t be upgrading their multichannels still in SD to HD anytime soon. We did see the introduction of 9GoHD in the capital cities this year after the regionals areas last year, but that’s about it.

And metropolitan viewers would be up in arms if their old TV sets were bricked by an MPEG-4 upgrade on Channel 7 or 71, or Channel 9 or 91, because they’re so used to MPEG-2, and they couldn’t care less anyway.

Those caring so much about picture quality in the metros will already be watching TV via the broadcaster’s streaming service or via m3u8 links (they offer FHD channels unlike terrestrial TV, a big advantage for 9Life and 9Rush which lack HD channels on FTA TV).

No mention of House of Wellness? Or did I miss it somewhere?

Correct. Seemed a strange omission.

Strange? It’s brand funded content in prime time. I wouldn’t be touting that either.

Same reason Seven aren’t keen to talk about The Big Trip.

This was as predicted incredibly underwhelming.

Half of the programmes mentioned (RFDS, 1% Club Australia, First Dates, Stranded on Honeymoon Island) were promised for 2024. How many times are networks going to promise content only for them to string it out another tv season due to them being cheap? The cupboards are bare and the fumes are starting to run dry.

No other Australian drama I see. Yet again no surprises. Long gone are the days of 7 priding themselves of being the channel of home grown drama. How many times are we going to see adverts telling us to stream Blue Heelers or Sons & Daughters? Programmes that are decades old. Yes I know 7 doesn’t have anything new to offer but it is beyond desperate, especially in an age where streamers are promising new and exciting dramas. Not 7, just rehashed shows from last millennia.

Speaking of streaming I have to laugh at 7 executives and their strategy for streaming at 7plus. Dropping one new import (a dud no doubt they got 0n the cheap) a month and hoping to boost views and engagement. None of these 7plus exclusives have ever done the business. It’s always Aus reality, Home & Away & the latest overblown US drama that aired on 7 in a plum spot. It seems like they put so much effort into endless adverts on 7 for crumbs in the streaming market. Nothing is going to grow a streaming brand but exclusive, quality original content. Relying on imports that are only making foreign studios richer and divesting money away from the Australian market is once again a terrible long term business plan. Is 7plus really going to be able to compete when the arse falls out of FTA tv? Being free doesn’t matter when it’s crap tv no one else wanted and that will eventually turn up on 7flix as cheap filler.

Solely focusing on Sport whilst slowly but surely dipping into the coffers of other departments and slashing their spends is a terrible strategy. A strategy in years to come won’t even be sustainable due to the unaffordability thanks to the increased costs/rights and having already pilfered from the other departments.

I know 7 is in an austere plodding business mode but unless they invest heavily in quality original products and yes that definitely includes scripted content, then the audience erosion is going to hasten at a remarkable rate. This schedule just looks embarrassingly pitiful and woefully out of touch. It doesn’t even feel like 7 buys into the BS they’re peddling.

‘7Plus will leapfrog Nine, ABC to become the dominant free-to-air streaming platform next year’: Seven’s bold plan for 2025

Gereurd Roberts, group managing director of Seven Digital elaborates: “Our high-value audience growth strategy is built around this concept of bonfires and fireworks.

Last year, 7plus had two of these shows – this year they plan to launch a new overseas series each month, with the exclusive first-run on 7plus for Suits: LA, Doc, The Hunting Party, Grosse Pointe Garden Society, St Denis Medical, Ludwig, and The Americas.

“We saw a real opportunity to drive new audiences into 7plus with this ‘7plus First’ philosophy where we’re aiming to drop at least one new program every month across the year, and really start to showcase 7plus being in that new premium video space,” Roberts explains of the strategy.

“What we’re trying to do is build a competitor to the ad funded SVODs through an SVOD strategy. And we’re seeing that work.”
