Supercars rev up on Seven

Darwin Triple Crown returns this weekend

Sports fans are buckling up ahead of this weekend’s highly anticipated Darwin Triple Crown Championship Round, which marks the first ever Supercars’ Indigenous Round, live and free on Seven, 7mate and 7plus.

Supercars teams have raised the bar ahead of the official introduction of the Indigenous Round, with a host of incredible liveries unveiled ahead of the championship event.

Seven’s resident motorsport expert Mark Beretta will take viewers live to Hidden Valley Raceway for a weekend jam-packed with action, kicking off from midday on Saturday afternoon, before a second five-hour telecast on Sunday afternoon.

Supercars legends Garth Tander, Mark Skaife and Craig Lowndes will return to the commentary box, alongside motorsport expert Neil Crompton, while fan favourites Mark Larkham and Riana Crehan lead the pit lane coverage.

Seven’s world-class Supercars coverage will continue uninterrupted during commercial breaks this weekend thanks to cutting edge picture-in-picture (PiP) technology introduced during the 2021 season.

Fans can tune in to the full broadcast live and free on Seven, 7mate and 7plus, while the full replay will be available as catch up on 7plus, along with Supercars highlights, docos and other bonus content.

Arriving at the sixth stop on the championship tour this weekend, Shane Van Gisbergen is firming as the man to beat following his impressive effort at Winton.

Leading the charge, Van Gisbergen holds a 281-point lead over Dick Johnson Racing’s Anton De Pasquale while Cameron Waters sits a further 52 points behind in third.

The only Supercars event to feature drag racing, Darwin will also host Nitro Up North – the grand finale of the Australian Top Fuel Championship – broadcast live and free on 7plus from 5.30pm AEDT on Sunday.

Top Fuel dragsters are the quickest accelerating racing cars in the world and the fastest sanctioned category of drag racing, with the fastest competitors reaching speeds over 500 kilometres an hour.

Highly respected motorsport journalist Chris Stubbs will have all the latest news over the three days, while Supercars icons Mark Skaife and Neil Crompton lead the commentary of the Supercars Championship’s premier event.

The Repco Supercars Championship has been building to this week at Australianmotorsport’s spiritual home, where reigning Bathurst champion Chaz Mostert returns alongside Fabian Coulthard while Sunday’s race will see the great Craig Lowndes become the first driver in Supercars’ history to start 300 events.

On Sunday, fans in the capital cities will not miss a second of the great race as Seven’s coverage continues uninterrupted during commercial breaks via cutting-edge picture-in- picture (PiP) technology on Channel 7, as seen throughout the 2022 Championship season.

Managing Director Seven Melbourne and Head of Network Sport, Lewis Martin, said: “It’s already been a massive year of sport on Seven, but you haven’t seen anything yet.

“The Bathurst 1000 is without a doubt the premier event in Australian motorsport and Seven will bring fans all the best action from Mount Panorama across three full days of adrenaline- charged live and free racing, from this Friday.”

Seven’s Bathurst coverage on Friday will include Supercars practice and qualifying. Later, viewers will enjoy some fun on Pit Lane Live, a live show from pit lane at Mount Panorama with a lighter look at the Great Race. Bathurst greats and some of this year’s drivers will join for a chat, and the winner of the Pirtek Pit Stop Challenge will also be crowned.

Saturday’s coverage from Mount Panorama starts at 10.00am AEDT on Channel 7, 7mate and 7plus, and will include Supercars practice and the Top 10 Shootout.

On Sunday, Seven’s broadcast kicks off with the Supercars warm up at 7.30 AEDT, before the event everyone has been waiting for – the Repco Bathurst 1000 – roars onto screens from 10.30am AEDT.

7 keeping the definition of “Live” fluid as usual

It’s a show which will air live at 7.00pm AEDT on 7plus, and 4pm in Perth on 7mate, and get replayed on 7mate in other states. What’s the confusion?

It’s going to be called “Pit Lane LIVE” when it’s delayed.

But it’s not delayed. It’s live on 7Plus.

But on 7mate, when it is delayed, it will still be called “Live”.

Might not be. They might package it differently. They could be calling it Live due to the airing on 7Plus component.

Not their fault arguably - it’d be produced by Supercars Media (or whatever they call their production arm these days) like everything else, and it also did go out on Fox Sports’ channel, indeed live there.

Seven could have easily just let everyone deal with it being delayed, so at least the 7plus option was something for those not following Bathurst on Foxtel.

To be fair, all the networks do it. My biggest beef is when they say shows/channels are “live-streamed” on their apps. There’s nothing live about them. They’re streamed or relayed, but the shows aren’t happening live, they’re prerecorded movies, dramas etc.
But that discussion is probably for another time, in another forum.

It looks like today’s Bathurst 1000 race will finish close to 6pm AEDT. It will be interesting to see if Seven will show the podium presentation on the main channel in Sydney and Melbourne (so the new season of Australia’s Got Talent can start at 7pm as scheduled), or show it on a multichannel. The problem is that 7mate in Sydney is showing the AFLW clash between Collingwood and GWS, and Gone with the Wind is now on 7flix, so 7TWO will be the only option for Sydney.
