Seven HD

SC Nine, SC ten and GTS/BKN (SCTV) are split as 2 seperated feeds within the SA market. As mentioned earlier these two feeds being:
1- Port Lincoln, Lower Eyre Peninsula (up To Cowell and Cleve) and Broken Hill
2- Whyalla, Port Augusta, Pt Pirie, Mid North (Clare and Burra through to Roxby Downs), top half of Yorke Peninsula

All of the “multi Channels” (i.e. 11, ONE, 7Two (called SC Two) 7mate (called SC Three), Gem, and Go! are on one feed.

Southern Cross TV promotes the fact it reaches 100% of audiences within the area. the spitting up of the SC Nine, SC 10 and GTS/BKN (SCTV) allows them to essentially double their ad revenue.

SC provides a 1/2 hourly news service on weeknights on GTS/BKN. However provides NO Local Content on any of the other channels (i.e. no 2 minute chicken noodle SC10 news updates)

I very much seriously doubt it. Seven has not really been a huge fan of HD to start with.

I don’t think the Olympics will matter. Seven might very well elect to use 7 mate ad the HD channel for opening / closing cemonies and other sporting events.

I seen to recall that GEM was used as the HD channel for the London Olympics so there’s a possibility seven might follow suit and make 7mate aw the HD channel for the Olympics.

If seven doesn’t put out a seven HD in time for AFL, it’s not the end of the world and I won’t be losing any sleep over it.

I personally don’t watch all that much on Seven anyway so am not personally bothered how long it takes them to launch a HD channel. I’d certainly prefer Seven to have most programing in native HD from Day 1 like Nine did, rather than only a few bits and pieces in native HD with the rest upconverted like Ten.

That said, I certainly do think it would be nice to see the network launch a HD channel and it will probably happen within say…12-18 months at the very most. It most likely won’t take that long for Seven to act on getting a main HD channel running (especially if a ABC HD launches this year), however the main focus in the technical/programing department at the moment is probably still getting 7Flix properly established.

That makes no sense to me. Why wait to have everything in HD? If that was the case we still wouldn’t have 9HD in Brisbane where huge chunks of programming are upconverted. Many of the older movies that Nine show don’t look HD either - Muriel’s Wedding last night for example with some still in 4:3 format.

I reckon HD won’t start until just before the Olympics in Rio

It was widely reported that Seven would broadcast matches in HD from the start of the new AFL deal in 2017, although Kerry Stokes asserted the network would look into broadcasting in HD before the new deal kicked in.

It seemed that Seven were being responsive to the demands of viewers when they broadcast the 2015 AFL grand final in HD. You have to wonder what is stopping them from delivering HD to viewers. They have huge plans to deliver the Rio Olympics coverage in innovative ways and it wouldn’t surprise me if they want to reserve broadcast spectrum for that purpose. A dedicated Olympics News channel has been mooted.

Engineers may also be pre-occupied with the video on demand and subscription aspects of the Rio coverage. It’s a huge undertaking to deliver 36 live streams, foreign language streams and various other services they have signalled their intention to deliver.

With the Olympics still five months away and Nine and Ten now broadcasting in HD, you would think Seven would be at a disadvantage but ratings, at this stage, seem to indicate their core audience isn’t that fussed by the delay.

Would it really matter if the main channel is in SD or HD as long as everybody have access to watching the Olympics? I don’t seem to think it would matter at all. Just as long as people get to watch the games, that’s the most important thing.

9HD - launched on 26 November last year
10HD - launched on 2 March
ABCHD - coming soon before 30 June
7HD - all lips are sealed with no official announcement.

I’d expect it will launch just in time for the Olympics.

And with that, let’s hope they take the time to relaunch Seven News entirely!

I’m looking forward to seeing a relaunch of Seven News.

They need to launch Seven HD before the AFL season starts otherwise they will be hell to pay and huge embarrassment.

I’m pretty confident Seven will deliver.

Agree. 7HD will be avail to all Seven, Southern Cross and Prime7 broadcast areas by August. I am just certain of it. The outcry of not having the games in HD almost a year after 9HD and 6 months after TenHD and ABC HD launch will be massive.

Well if that’s the case seven has a lot of work to do in such a short period of time. Time will tell.

I am betting any changes will be more likely to occur in July, on the eve of the games. The ball is in seven’s court.

Even if 7 HD didn’t arrive before the Olympics the games will still be in HD on 7 mate.

Yes, but my guess is that Seven won’t simulcast the Games on 7 and 7mate, so any events in HD on mate will be “second tier” events that Seven won’t show on 7… So the main events would then still be SD only.

Not sure how accurate this is but looks like there is no Seven HD in the near future.

Well given that site was the source for the supposed confirmation of it happening, at least one of the articles will be correct.
