Seven Cricket Coverage

Could the duel thing be similar to what Nine did for a few years during tests with Mark Nicholas and Brayshaw whereby Nicholas was the main presenter but Brayshaw presented some segments during the pre-match?

Tim Lane is a friend of mine. i met him when he worked for SEN back in 2004. He is one of the gentlemen of Australian media.

What did he do at SEN? Thought he stayed on at the ABC doing Friday night footy during his time with 10.

And I agree a thorough gentleman in my many encounters back when he was full time with Aunty.

The article at Mediaweek has two group photos of the commentators at the SCG.
Also a report on Seven News Sydney tonight:

And Alison Mitchell looking forward to join Seven’s commentary team:

Seven’s cricket producer David Barham told Mumbrella at this morning’s launch that BBL would be shown this summer at 7pm AEDT on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. The network will be also running cross-promotions with News Corp to highlight community cricket, along with cricket tragic of the year and a catch of the year competition which may extend to local games and backyard cricket.

Point is cricket on tv doesn’t need ball-by-ball commentators.

Richie Benaud:

Benaud said one of the important things he was taught (as a commentator) was not to speak unless he could add to the picture on the screen.

“The key is to learn the value of economy with words and to never insult the viewer by telling them what they can already see,” Benaud said.

Ironically…nine would have “play by play” callers. I once saw a running schedule of their commentary line up of a days play and they classified one commentator as “play by play” and another as special comments. This was their own internal document.

Have you listened to some of nines commentary? Often they would say “the ball is going down leg side” or “glorious cover drive” etc etc. much of the language is what one would consider play by play.

The Daily Telegraph are reporting Michael Slater is set to be the host for their BBL coverage, as well as being part of the test coverage.

Ergh please no.

Yes and i don’t like it. Richie Benaud would be spinning in his grave.

Why? Really really don’t see why Slater is all that bad.

Why? He was a journalist and broadcaster whilst he was playing test cricket.

I actually like it, because often I can’t sit in front of the TV for an entire session, less alone an entire Test match. So having someone commentate about a cracking shot, a ball whizzing past the outside edge, etc. is necessary because while the TV is on, I may not be in front of it, or paying it my full attention.

Have to say, the appointments do sound rather positive from my end. Some familiar faces which is essential I think but also some fresh faces to the FTA cricket scene in Australia which should be good. Pleasantly surprised.

Really interesting interview on SEN with David Barham regarding Seven’s coverage.

He said that in each 2 hour session of test matches, there will be 3 commentary rotations lasting 40 minutes each, with 1 caller (Brayshaw, Mitchell, Lane) and 2 experts in the box during each period.

He’s also confirmed Andy Maher will be part of the BBL and WBBL coverage. Additionally, there will be specialist Indian and Sri Lankan commentators in the box for their respective matches.

@Sifon would be disappointed about it.

Compared with commentary patterns on other media outlets:
Nine: six commentary rotations lasting 30 minutes each with 1-2 callers and 1 expert
ABC Radio: 1 caller rotation every 20 minutes from start of session, 1 expert every 30 minutes from start of session

Tim Lane also said he won’t be doing the final test, a condition of him signing, because of his age/energy, as he’ll still be jumping between commentary boxes (for Macquarie Radio).

He also confirmed what @jthommo said about 40min intervals with Tim, Brayshaw and Alison all calling one, with a couple of the already known experts.

Tim said he has had some weeks/months of discussion and pondering, saying he had to think hard and draw a line somewhere. The radio presenters also alluded to his time with Barham at Ten AFL.

Does he mean he will not commentate January’s Sydney test for Seven and Macquarie Radio?
