Don’t think they’re allowed to differentiate by more than just state.

Collingwood captain Darcy Moore is special guest on Talking Finals next Wednesday, ahead of the Pies’ preliminary final.

Talking Finals will end its season with a Grand Final special on Wednesday 27 September.

Wonder if they’ll commit to/confirm Talking Footy (or similar) returning for the home and away season from next year, following Taking Finals?

Surely, Talking Footy will go back into production next year?

Seven’s set up on the ground tonight. Fox on the stage of the Warne Stand.

I’m surprised Melbourne has put Better Homes And Gardens on the main channel after the news instead of the AFL pre-game that is on 7mate.

That’s what they’ve always done since 2014. From what I can remember, in the first or second year of the 2012-16 broadcasting rights deal, BH&G would be shown at 7:30pm on Thursday nights in the AFL states (or Wednesday nights if there was also a Thursday night match), and Friday nights in the league states (NSW and Queensland).

IIRC, BH&G switched back to a Friday night timeslot at 7:00pm so as to maintain consistency across the network…

Fixture for next week’s preliminary finals

Friday 22 September
Collingwood v GWS (MCG, 7.50pm AEST)

Saturday 23 September
Brisbane Lions v Carlton (The Gabba, 5.15pm AEST)

The Lions-Blues match will finish at around the same time the NRL preliminary final between Broncos and Warriors kicks off at Suncorp Stadium (7.50pm AEST).

Has the Second Preliminary Final always be a 5.15pm start, or done so because of the NRL that follows to reduce congestion in Brisbane?

I have a feeling that this match will air on 7mate in Sydney too…

Both reasons are correct.

In the past five years, the Saturday preliminary final had always been played in twilight, to allow the away team to fly home straight after the match.

The twilight preliminary final has been scheduled in the region of 4.40pm to 5.15pm. The dramatic 2016 preliminary final between GWS and Western Bulldogs started at 5.15pm Sydney time.

NRL and AFL games have previously both been scheduled at the same time in Brisbane. It doesn’t seem to cause significant issues with congestion. The biggest issue that is raised is that when both games are on the same day fans of both codes have to make a choice which to attend.

It’s to allow Carton to travel home following the match should they win to maximise preparation for the grand final.

Thank you for all the replies.

It does make sense now with the twilight games re to travel back for more prep time for the Grand Final. And also gives those in Brisbane a choice to now watch both games.

Im a Sydneysider with some knowledge of the AFL coverage, but wasn’t too certain with this particular schedule. Has cleared up a few things.

Even though fans can watch both games on TV on Saturday, it would be almost impossible to attend both.

Sorry, I should have clarified. Yes, watch both on the telly. The distance between the Gabba and Suncorp Stadium and the times between the games is virtually impossible.

AFL’s night of nights set to sparkle

The Brownlow Medal, Monday, 25 September only on Seven and 7plus

The 2023 Charles Brownlow Medal is promising to be one of the most nail-biting of recent times and the Seven Network will be there to deliver every glittering moment on Monday, 25 September, when the winner of the AFL’s highest individual honour is declared.

In a year headlined by a talented-stacked group of elite contenders, the Brownlow race is wide open, with leading competitors Nick Daicos, Marcus Bontempelli, Christian Petracca, Lachie Neale and Zak Butters almost impossible to split.

Seven’s exclusive, live and free coverage begins at 7.30pm AEST Monday on Channel 7, 7mate and – for the first time on all devices – 7plus. It will be hosted by 7AFL host and commentator, Hamish McLachlan and 7NEWS Melbourne’s Rebecca Maddern, direct from Crown Melbourne.

Monday night’s festivities will kick off with the Brownlow Medal Red Carpet, hosted by Abbey Gelmi, with Dale Thomas and Emma Freedman, as they cover all the glitz and glamour of Australian football’s night of nights.

In a bonus for footy fans across the country, Seven has made its exclusive coverage of the Brownlow Medal and 2023 AFL Grand Final more accessible than ever before, with both major events available to watch live, free and in HD* on 7plus across all devices.

Managing Director Seven Melbourne and Head of Network Sport, Lewis Martin, said: “From the glamour of the red carpet, through to the thrilling final vote count, the Seven Network is rapt to deliver another epic Brownlow Medal broadcast to all Australians, live and free on Channel 7 and 7plus,” he said.

“As we’ve seen in recent years, the Brownlow Medal is often unpredictable, and this year is no different. With young guns Nick Daicos and Zak Butters making a huge impact in their second and fifth seasons respectively, alongside the likes of the competition’s most experienced players in Marcus Bontempelli and Christian Petracca, we are set for a nail-biting finish.

“Together with the entire network, Seven has once again assembled a team that will bring viewers all the night’s biggest stories and historic moments, as they happen,” Mr Martin said.

“With new broadcast integrations and technology – including the state-of-the-art Sparklebot slow motion camera on the red carpet – it’s sure to be a night like no other on Seven and 7plus, Your Home of Footy.”

The Brownlow Medal marks the start of the year’s biggest week of football on Seven as Australia counts down to the AFL Grand Final on Saturday, 30 September. Seven will announce full details of its Grand Final week coverage in the coming days.

All episodes of Talking Finals, The Front Bar and Armchair Experts will be available for streaming on the AFL Hub on 7plus, along with match previews and reviews, plus interviews, bonus player access and features on demand.
