I’ve noticed she’s been doing expert comms for AFLW coverage. Interesting to see how she goes in the role of pbp!

Seven News’ Tom Browne reported this evening that the AFL had scheduled two blockbuster matches to open the 2023 season in March. Richmond will play Carlton in the season opener at the MCG on the Thursday, followed by Collingwood taking on reigning premiers Geelong at the same venue the following night.

The AFL will release the round 1 fixture this weekend, with the rest to come sometime next week.

IMO it should be Geelong v. Sydney on Thursday night.

They will be saving that as a Geelong home game at GMHBA once the new stand is ready (probably about round 7 or 8) - so that the flag can be unveiled before the rematch.

Excellent scheduling. A Collingwood and Geelong blockbuster in Round 1 will be great for both crowd and television audiences. I’d expect the Pies will (quite rightly) get lots of Friday night and Sunday afternoon matches on Seven this year.

GF replay didn’t work this year (crowd wise) & they are not going to do it at the MCG + GMHBA is not ready until later (R8-9)

The full fixture, with the first 15 rounds plus rounds, match-ups and locations for the rest of the season, will be released next week.

Wasn’t up against much.

Doesn’t it win the award every year?

This year was the first time an Audience Choice Award was announced for this category.

Other nominees in this category were:
2021 Melbourne Cup (10)
2022 AFL season (Foxtel)
2022 AFL season (Seven)
2022 Australian Open tennis (Nine)
XXII Commowealth Games Birmingham (Seven)

How? Why not the 2022 one?

The AFL this morning revealed the fixture for the Gather Round in South Australia next April.

Voting ran during October (on news.com.au, closing on October 19th) so the 2022 Cup hadn’t been run yet.

Oh, so that’s what gather round is. It’s basically like the AFL’s version of the NRL magic round. surely they could have come up with a better name than gather round lol.

Yeah not a great name.

As someone from Adelaide, I’m more curious as to how 7 and Fox will manage to broadcast all 9 games within 4 days.

The only real crossover in terms of host broadcaster at the same venue on the same day will be the Saturday.

Essendon v Melbourne Fox
Port v WB Seven
