Seven AFL Coverage

Channel 7 had 3 females in 3 years hosting The Kick. Samantha Lane hosted the pre game show until the end of 2018 season. Then, Nat Edwards came along in 2019. With Nat Edwards on maternity leave, Abbey Way joining 7’s AFL coverage this year. A new The Kick, a new era. Bring on Saturday Night Footy!

According to The Australian, Bruce McAvaney and fellow commentators may call AFL matches off a monitor at a sterilised room at HSV, rather than at the venues.

Things keep getting worse for 7. The season has been reduced to 17 rounds.

Sam McClure said on Sportsday on 3AW that Seven could be refunded some of the money it paid for this year’s matches under the current broadcast deal with the AFL.

That’s a possibility. But it could also be compensated via the addition of more primetime matches on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday nights.

She’s back at work at AFL Media.

Seems Georgie Parker has switched to Fox Footy.

NPC managed to fix the PRG for the late change (sorry for subtitles whoops)

But American Pickers promos still incorrectly aired.

Well they need money back but they also need content. They rely on the AFL between March-September.

If they get the money back (which they’re most likely hoping) then I hope that they can settle that debt and invest in some decent content.

The year just gets worse. I wonder why the NRL hasn’t done the same.

The NRL need the money, a shutdown of 3 months apparently finishes them, as in bankruptcy.

Footy Classified has just said that Seven and Foxtel have a 2yr extension, at $458m per year. With a possible 2yr extension at the end of that.

Where did they find the money?

No mention of streaming rights? Is it just an extension of the existing broadcast deal? If so, Seven has a lot to answer for.

Seven’s terrible business decisions continue.

Really? Not criticizing you - just doubt that considering she was involved with Seven’s AFLW coverage over the weekend

Saw that same segment you’re referring to. Thought that figure was referring to the current deal, not the potential extension?

Caroline Wilson said the terms of an extended deal would be (paraphrasing) ‘largely’ the same as the current deal. No exact details were given though besides the length of the extension (2 years) and when it’ll be announced (in the next few months)

This deal includes streaming rights; pure extension to what they have.

And it’s only $418m for the next two years, with the last two undecided at present.

Does this mean that nine/ten/Optus deal for the NRL could happen?

That was totally irresponsible of the CEO of the NRL to say that. It is just making people panic more and invoking fear on the fans. It is just like all those people buying 20 packets of fish fingers. Selfishness.

I disagree. Although, in the current climate, I would postpone the announcement. In the current free to air landscape signing a 2 year extension is a smart move from 7. They will probably not be able to compete to get the AFL rights in 2024 and at the moment the AFL is the only thing keeping their shares together. This gives 7 an extra 2 years to stockpile on entertainment to better their situation for a life without the AFL or alternatively look at building relationships with streaming partners.

Brian Taylor, who is currently in Los Angeles filming Holey Moley, told Triple M’s Hot Breakfast yesterday that he would miss the first three rounds of the AFL season (if it goes ahead), due to the Federal Government’s 14-day self-isolation rules when he returns home. According to today’s Herald Sun, Hamish McLachlan will take Brian’s chair for Friday’s game between Western Bulldogs and Collingwood, while Seven has several possible replacements for Brian for Sunday afternoon matches.

Probably Jason Bennett for the Sunday games.
