If I remember correctly, the Gold Coast vs Adelaide game that was scheduled for the early slot on that Sunday got delayed until 3 so it could be shown on 7 around the country (I think it was still a Fox Footy production though).
Also I believe that turned out to be a false positive case as well just to add to the chaos.
2020 was obviously a huge anomaly due to Covid. Fixtures were being scheduled and rescheduled on the fly, with teams and venues having only a few days notice of games in some cases. Of course, logistics were far easier to organise when no crowds were permitted to attend stadiums.
This new broadcast deal is already a disaster. It was already stupid when it was signed but now in all practicalities it’s worse. Gil (hamish’s brother) left them with a turd in ceding to the demands of Fox.
If FTA wants a better deal, then they may need to stump up more cash. While the lion’s share of the money comes from the Subscription side of the arrangement, sports are going to work to give them exclusivity.
I’d love to know the intricacies of the 9/Stan and 10/P+ bids that were rejected.
Would be good moving forward to not have executive bonuses linked to $ amounts of broadcasting deals too. Hopefully that would provide a bit more freedom for them to look more closely at deals that deliver better results for fans.
My recollection is, based on media reports:
• 9 was only after Thursday Night football, AFL told them they had to bid for everything, came back with $2.5b over 5 years (500m/y), but by then it was too late.
• 10 was offering $6b over 10 years (600m/y). Main issue was Ten regularly comes fourth in the TV ratings behind 7, 9 & ABC.
• 7 & Fox were happy to have no increase on the previous contract extension. That obviously wasn’t going to work for the AFL, so the two networks made their demands in exchange for more money. The deal ended up @ $4.5b over 7 years (just under $634m/year); note it only beat out the 10 deal in terms of avg. money per season.
Is ‘Kick ons’ a regular show for after Thursday Night Post match? Was it announced along side their other shows?
I know they had ‘extra time’ or something as the Friday night post game show but Kick Ons on Thursday is after the post match section according to tv guide and ‘Extra Time’ is not on the tv guide
Can we assume the Perth-based team will call Sunday home games of Dockers and Eagles for Seven this year, regardless if those games are produced by Seven or Fox Footy?
That was my assumption. They were already doing their own coverage around the match for WA Fox matches. Uncertain whether they can use thier own graphics, though.
I get that Perth & WA is 7’s city and state but this feels unnecessary as Fox already have a dedicated commentary team in Perth with Paps being a really good caller. I don’t think this 7’s commentary team is good compared to Fox, it could make more people switch to Fox than watch on 7. Now if they had Dennis back in the comms box then it would be different.
They could have done this in Adelaide or something where Fox doesn’t have a dedicated team.
Possibly, but I doubt it - back when Seven Adelaide were still doing local pre, half time, and post-game for most Fox games, if West Coast or Fremantle came to SA, WA got the full fox production.
I’m guessing Perth has additional resources since they also have The West Australian - would be a fair few sports people already on the payroll.
The Brisbane Lions v Geelong game has officially been moved to Round 3, and will be played on the Saturday night at 6.35pm AEST / 7.35pm AEDT. It will become a Fox Footy exclusive game, with 7 Qld showing a delayed telecast from 8pm local time.
Gold Coast v Essendon will be played as part of Round 24 on a date to be determined, and will become a Channel 7 game.
That means both Gold Coast and Essendon will play two games in Round 24. The Suns are earmarked to face Port Adelaide while the Dons will play Carlton.
