Seven AFL Coverage (2016-24 seasons)

Expect the second final to be on the main channel in Sydney and Brisbane.

All the finals have been scheduled for main channel coverage in Sydney and Brisbane, regardless of who is playing so far.

That plan may have changed. He could also return for the GF.

If the Saturday preliminary final is a Saturday twilight, would 7 put it on main channel in Brisbane or Sydney, given either the Lions or Giants will be playing in it?

It will be on the main channel in all markets regardless.

It’s already pencilled in on Seven’s schedules.

EDIT - Not yet, but it is likely to be if a local team get’s through.

AFL slotted in for twilight on 7mate but probably could be changed

Tonight 7Mate in SA will air the 2024 SANFL Margery Medal count live from the Adelaide Oval tonight between 9pm-10:30pm local time.

I’m going to guess the callers would be
Friday: BT & JB
Saturday: Nicholson & Darcy

No Jason Bennett as he is probably calling VFL matches that are happening Saturday arvo

You are probably right.

Saturday is obviously between Bennett and Nicholson to pair with Darcy. Maybe Bennett will get an opportunity this week, then Nicholson the following Saturday for the prelim?

Dale Thomas confirmed on radio today he will do special comments for Saturdays game.

VFL preliminary finals are happening Saturday. I don’t see 7 using Nicholson for that when they have always used Bennett. Hence why I think it’s Nicholson doing AFL

There are others who can do VFL…Nigel Carmody, Joey Pignataro etc., but yes, Jason would be the most experienced of them.

For we all know Hamish McLachlan might just turn up and call with Darce instead :joy:

If they pay a decent amount for both commentators, then using them weekly would help justify their salaries. If it means Bennett get’s put on VFL (because he knows the players, etc) because Nicholson doesn’t normally do it (and thus have the knowledge), then that’s just the way it is.

Jason mentioned he’ll be back on VFL this week last round.

Grabs from this article about AFL on 7

Seven has already secured the services of Nine’s Kane Cornes for 2025 and beyond. They are also in discussions for more talent for both their coverage and new weeknight footy shows expected on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Effectively giving Seven AFL on tap seven days a week. (Overlooking the fact they won’t have Saturday AFL for the start of season in 2025.)

What’s happening to 7AFL in 2025?

“Our football coverage is fantastic, but there’s certainly opportunities for us to grab more share of audience,” said Jones.

“I would love to have more programming on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next year where we can tell AFL stories, and feature them prominently on 7plus and on Seven.”

What about new commentators and analysts? “When the weekend rolls around, yes, let’s bring in fresh talent. I don’t think we’re done yet from that point of view.”

In addition to Cornes, there’s been speculation Seven has also targeted Foxtel’s Gerard Whateley.

There’s an ambition from our [AFL] team to set the agenda, perhaps a little more than what we have in the past.” Jones talked about “analysis shows for the football lovers where we can dive into what’s going on and why, the politics of football, the trade stories, and more.”

He added the 2024 team continues to do a great job. “Right up until Grand Final day they have all done a remarkable job. On that day we have four-time Premiership players and Premiership captains Luke Hodge and Joel Selwood.

Dale Thomas has been an absolute sensation this year. He is going from strength to strength and is going to be a huge part of the team moving forward. We already of course have Matthew Richardson who’s probably the most loved, based on all of our sports broadcasts from an expert point of view.

“There’s already great depth, but we’d like to bring even more talent into the team to complement those that we’ve already got.”

Maybe they will finally correct the mistake they made cancelling the deal they were working on with him - when Warburton came around, he cancelled it.

Whateley would make a good face for 7Sport.

And Whateley seems like such a natural fit for a network that has AFL, cricket and horse racing.

Bruce replacement sorted. Would mean he can’t work on another Olympics though.

Unless Seven brought back the rights for 2034 and beyond (presuming that Seven is still around and Free to Air television is still a thing).
