SEN (Radio)

Did they lose the rights to the 3pm match?

If they havenā€™t itā€™s very dumb

EDIT: Looks like they have given up competing with the other 3 radio broadcasters, Seeks like theyā€™ll air Motorsport on Sunday. Big miss from SEN

Just a another silly decision in amongst the line of silly decisions they seem to make

Didnā€™t they learn from their early days in Melbourne that live sport (and more to the point, live footy) is the key to their existence? Everything else feeds off that - the talk, the discussion shows, all needs the content to generate it. The station there only found its feet permanently once they got a slice of the live footy.

Broadcasting the vroom-vrooms or yet another chat show while the other guys have the footy on live is sure way to lose your listeners, and once they tune out theyā€™re probably not tuning back.

Yes but this is Hutchy, who is always right. Just ask him!

I guess the devilā€™s advocate argument to that is, they tried that, and still only rated 0.3-0.4 on the weekends.

Itā€™s probably still fair to say that thereā€™s not as much a market for rugby league talk as there is for AFL - just look at how the Continuous Call transformed over two decades when they realised that talking gibberish on the weekend rated better than talking footy for four or six hours (especially during the years when Jon Harker and co were calling it exclusively on 2GB and they were without football on 2UE). Even the ABCā€™s realised that, having put Roy and HG on as a show on early Saturday afternoons in the league states.

Itā€™s almost not too far of a stretch to say that they could almost put on the hybrid ā€œSEN Spiritā€-like format that they put on in south-west WA - have breakfast and The Run Home as sport, and other stuff around it, and itā€™d probably rate better - but they would have decimated much higher-rating stations (particularly in 4KQā€™s case) to do so. Itā€™d certainly be a huge swallowing of Hutchy pride too [they are only doing that to satisfy local content requirements really] so I canā€™t imagine that actually happening.

The only question mark isā€¦ with NRL Nation not on at all, the collateral damage to that would be to the BOG stations that took itā€¦ canā€™t imagine theyā€™d be taking either of the other commercial alternatives, which might leave the ABC as the only option in some markets.

Iā€™m hopeful that they are still streaming it at least and on selling their broadcast to regionals. I get their thinking behind the Saturday programming, not that I agree with it but they might still broadcast their other 3 allocated games.

SEN finally put out a presser on this on Monday: SEN tackles Rugby League season with unrivalled coverage

From what I can tell, the NRL Nation name is dead, itā€™s just SEN League now. :headstone:

Thursday nights will be on the SEN league states/SENZ frequencies, at least; also confirms that Saturday and Sunday afternoons on air will be as mentioned above. (Itā€™s bizarre as to how it spins these programs as ā€œSENā€™s commitment to rugby league continues to growā€ but this is their fantasy land.)

No word about the other games they could cover (ie. arenā€™t 2GB exclusive) - like 6pm Friday and 6pm Sunday games - but weā€™ll find out as the program grid moves on (itā€™s only one day in advance these days) or the live sport guide gets updated.

(The problem of having multiple sports rights is showing even here - the Thursday night game is bumping day 2 of the Australia-India third test to the AFL statesā€™ feeds and the appā€¦ apparently the early sessions of that will be on-air in Brisbane but not in Sydney. Huh?)

Queensland Cup coverage continuing on Saturdays as per last year.

Iā€™ve said it before, it will sound odd hearing SEN League branding on BOG stations including 2SM Sydney.

But I doubt BOG would care that much. Itā€™s SENā€™s decision after all.

6pm NRL game covered tonightā€¦ but for some reason, not scheduled for Brisbane. Gold Coast 1620 scheduled to have it (but some up there will also have the option of Radio 97, as itā€™s going to the Super Network, so :man_shrugging:). Being a Warriors game in Wellington, SENZ doing a local call.

SENQ was going to stay with the cricket, but with Australia chasing 76 runs today, itā€™s going to be over not long after lunch either way - so itā€™s possible that they may end up crashing into the NRL, though maybe not as I still expect that 76 [or being bowled out for less, wouldnā€™t be surprised there] to take a while!

then the Sydney, Gold Coast and NZ stations crashing late into the basketball grand final game 1 between the Kings and Breakers (Track in Sydney taking the first half hour).

what a mess  and still bizarre for the SYD/BRIS stations to be totally devoid of live sport on Saturday, until the EPL late at night

Bizarre place to put a notice for it, buried on the bottom of the streaming page for 1170 - but it looks like SEN Sydney finally got their approval in being allowed to increase their transmitter power from 7.5 kW to 10 kW (remaining 5 kW at night) back in November, with a three month provisional period (to allow for feedback) that expired about a fortnight ago.

This thread mentioned that they previously trialled that a couple of years ago, about the time SEN started on 1170 in the first place.

SEN 1170 AM has received approval from ACMA to increase our signal power during the daytime and reverting to the current power at night.

This will be done, on 21st November 2022 when SEN 1170 will be increasing their signal power to 10kWā€™s for a period of three months.

At the conclusion of this time frame, pending no significant complaints from listeners living in the transmitter area, the increase will remain permanent.

The increase in signal will be controlled via DAY/NIGHT switching and will be confined to daylight hours, the signal at night will be automatically returned to normal current power of 5kWā€™s.

Also noticed that they are moving the streaming on their app behind an log-in soon [no mention of date, just a ā€œget readyā€ message at this time]. Unsurprising in the current streaming environment, but also kinda ā€œconvenientā€ for them, as the group-wide account (branded ā€œSEN Oneā€ apparently) is already used for their SEN Track-related betting apps (The Quaddie, etc). >_>

Having tried to listen to 1620 SEN Gold Coast on a few occasions while down there, Iā€™d surely be on Radio 97 (or anything else that had the footy coverage) instead of that if I could. Coverage is appalling, poor range and horribly affected by Vision Brisbane once you start heading north. Canā€™t they find another 16xx frequency thatā€™s less of a mess?

I think youā€™d start to find the limitation on these NAS services running off 400 watts max - and their licences specifically stating they donā€™t get protection from each other. [Iā€™m presuming that the one currently licensed to Niche, at Capalaba, is the one that is being leased out to Vision]

SEN GCā€™s transmitter is pretty far south on the Gold Coast (at Burleigh) - so I wouldnā€™t be too surprised if the reception is not brilliant once you get north of, say, the theme parks - if that, even.

Yes, 1620 Brisbane (from the nursery at Capalaba) is carrying Vision Christian Radio.

I spend a lot of time around the Southport/Nerang areas and even there itā€™s not great. In all honesty Iā€™m better leaving it on 693 in the car in those parts.

Thatā€™s probably fair enough - I suspect it was a bit of a stopgap combined with Track on Brisbane until they could get a proper station going, and I imagine 693 would still be stronger there.

The only real point of difference conmpared to 693 these days is that Gold Coast tends to still follow the Sydney schedule closer, when Sydney and Brisbane split into different feeds (like what was expected on Friday night when Sydney didnā€™t take the cricket)ā€¦ was really just a stop-gap while they found a full frequency in Brisbane [which as seen, thereā€™s nothing in the 1611/20/29 range left in metro Brisbane], so the schedulingā€™s still a partial relic of that. (I guess they consider themselves lucky that one basically fell into their lap.) May as well listen to 693 if itā€™s strong enough tbh.

Will SEN be having live commentary of the Newcastle Supercars this weekend?
Iā€™m confused with their rights they have with Supercars.

I think the suggestion was that theyā€™d fill their Sundays with it - thatā€™s whatā€™s happening in this case, 12.00 (AEDT) to 5.30pm - whichā€™d be enough to cover the 2nd raceā€™s shootout and race proper.

Note that both 1116 and Fanatic are listed on this, Iā€™d suggest that itā€™d flip from one to the other when the AFL starts.

SENā€™s announcement on Tom Morrisā€™ return as new co-host of a tiemslot not going down well with the public todayā€¦ :flushed:

ICYMI: Was fired by Foxtel last year, after his apparently private group chat recording was leaked, with him making very unprofessional and unacceptable vulgar comments about a female colleague

Tom Morris will be working with his former Fox Sports colleague (Sarah Olle) as well.

Very difficult to make a joke here that isnā€™t defamatory.
