SBS World News

It might just be the angle, but that background looks different from what is usually used on SBS or NITV News:

What could it have been for? A rebrand?

Looking at sbs news from yesterday, they just used that background but nothing else changed.

Saw a new promo on SBS Food tonight.

It has the slogan “Your window to the real world”.

It doesn’t really match the rest of the branding IMO:

Another backwards step for the bulletin. This set and graphics package was excellent and very SBS when it launched in 2017. Since then every graphics tweak (in house of course) has made things worse and weakened the SBS News brand. The old white globe loop was only used for a few seconds each evening and was much, much better than this.

We are due for a professional relaunch given this look started in 2017 and it’s SBS’s 50th year this year. Unfortunately SBS these days seems to be asleep at the wheel on a number of fronts - but especially news and comissioning. We’ll only get more of the same slop.

Looks very sterile and uninviting, especially given how white and darkly lit the set is in general.

New AR graphics (similar to the finance ones) used for Sport tonight.

Clarification: SBS editorial guidance on Middle East conflict

Statement by Mandi Wicks, SBS Director of News and Current Affairs:

SBS wishes to issue a clarification following recent discussion about its editorial guidance to reporters.

It is not correct to say that SBS journalists are not allowed to use the term Palestine.

SBS historically used the term “Occupied Palestinian Territories” to refer to the Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem.

With the recent announcement by the Australian Government at the UN, SBS’s guidance is now to refer to the “Occupied Palestinian Territories, which Australia recognises as the State of Palestine”.

This provides context for our audiences, and accurately reflects the recent developments.

SBS is editorially independent from Government, and our editorial guidance is continually evolving.

Final for year.

Fingers and toes SBS News gets a total overhaul next year. I was hoping for something big given their anniversary this year, but no. It’s so tired, stale and formulaic. The set and red graphics have been in use since 2017.

For some reason the program is labeled as “SBS World News 2026” on the EPG and SBS On-Demand.

SBS World Late News returns Monday 19 January 10:35 PM.
